Mali’s modern boundaries were drawn in 1890, when French Sudan was created, and united two very different regions: the Sudanian savannas in the south and the Sahara Desert to the north. For years anthropologists and others looked at African ethnic groups as being mostly solitary and static. Early French and Portuguese explorers identified sections of the West African coast by the area’s resources, which is how Côte d'Ivoire, or Ivory Coast, got its modern name. Community History
Most of the African Americans in this community can trace their ancestry back to West Africa in present-day Republic of Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Senegal, and Mali. As cotton spread across the South, slavery spread with it. By mid-century, African Americans made up almost half of Georgia’s population and outnumbered whites in South Carolina by two to one, and most were enslaved. After the Civil War, black adults and children crowded schools, eager for education. But when Jim Crow laws stripped away their newly won rights, many moved North looking for better lives.

Early North Carolina African Americans
Community History
Most African Americans in this community can trace their ancestry back to West Africa in present-day Republic of Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. Over a two-hundred-year period many were enslaved and brought to North Carolina to work on small farms. Although many were enslaved, some had gained or purchased their freedom before the 1700s, when indentured labor and slavery weren’t always lifelong sentences. Others escaped and lived in a free, independent community in the Great Dismal Swamp on the Albemarle Sound.
