The study that basically got me Exiled from Science!

Alright guys. First Journal entry and it's going to be about my former life. First just a bit of background information so i can try and catch you all up.

For 3 years (from 2005 to 2008) i studied molecular biology at Sheffield University and got good enough at it to be recognised to the extent of the national team working on decoding the Human Genome.

There are basically 6 billion strings of DNA in your body and all of them correspond to a letter. A - Adenine, T - thymine, C - cytosine, G -guanine. From these 4 letters obviously in different combinations we know the Human Genome down to it's chemical breakdown.

I know that bit is a bit boring but i needed to explain it. Anyway. Our job was to breakdown all the letters and learn what they mean. for example we needed to know what combination of letters would make an ear, or a heart, or a brain you get my drift. Once we know that we can then start to know when something isn't quite right. And because we can tell from the day of conception what someone Genome will have in it we can determine if it's right from day 1.

Let me try and explain it a bit better. I'll shorten things for simplicity.

A healthy featus might have the DNA sequence of - AGCTCGT

a abnormal featus might have the DNA sequence AGCTCTT

Just that change in one DNA letter we know that something isn't right, and ultimately out job what to find out what wasn't right.

Now you know what i did i'll now tell you what got me kicked out. Basically late 2008 i was assigned the task to find out if anything environmental affects DNA.

I started by doing a bit of simple research. Looked at pollutions, looked at different cultures. and so on and so on. Then late one Saturday afternoon i got the idea of drugs. Can drugs affect DNA. You hear about it on the news and such. Shots from birth giving kids Autism and such.

Well after a bit of trail and error i came to the conclusion that while drugs do affect people they don't change DNA. However what i did noticed but couldn't figure out is why do people take drugs differently. For example some people an smoke weed like fish drink water. And for other people 1 toke on a joint can send them into a coma. Why was this?

After looking into this a little bit i had a eureka moment. People are affected by drugs BECAUSE of there DNA! What i mean is if you take speed badly then the chanced are your parents do and your children will and you children's children will too! If these letters in your DNA line up in a certain sequence then they produce a protein. If this protein reacts badly with the chemical make up of speed or marijuana then you will have a BAD time and possibly die.

Now i have partaken in the odd joint in my life and unfortunately i do take drugs badly hense i don't do them. I love the high i get but not the low. So i started work on my own little project.

I found that if i could figure out what it was in a drug that gave you the "bad trip" per say and then if i could find out what string of DNA it reacts with i could eradicate it all together. So i actually started making drugs. With no Harmful side affects. Well no side affects what so ever because i had taken what was harmful out of there. I had made drugs that gave you all the highs and none literally none of the lows.

This would never work on a global basis as every drug has to be manufactures specifically for someone Genetic Make-up.

Obviously my superiors weren't best please when it all came out and obviously i lost my job. Which means i lost access to a lab and since then i moved on from that life and pursued new things. But for that few months. I honestly though i was onto someone there.

Hope this wasn't too boring! :)

always wondered about the slight change of a DNA sequence or if there is an xtra chromosome what and how would that affect its future growth? ...this is what i have tried to argue with people and they told me I'm on crack *wtf ever* if some of them actually used their brains rather than the 1% they do manage to find they would know what some of us already know *duh* lol ....I really enjoyed this piece...you so rock!!!

Damn! I wish MY DNA could be the "drugs suck" string! Unfortunately I got stuck with the opposite! Great journal entry, btw!
