Not just a coincidence

Working on a system on the bench - was running absolutely horrible. Discovered that Windows Search was having an issue on start-up due to the viruses I cleaned off and was eating up 100% of the processor cycles.

So I managed to correct that issue and the damn thing was still running like it was stuck in the mud.

So I uninstalled the last thing the owner installed - Norton Antivirus.

It immediately started running like a computer of its age should run.

Gawddam bloatware Norton crap... and it still couldn't stop or clean the damn viruses!

Norton IS a virus.

Norton and Mcafee pee me off. Just out of interest is there an antivirus you'd recommend? I use Avast which hasn't failed me yet but I'm open to suggestions if there's a better one.

Avast, for free products is probably your best option. I've lost faith in AVG as of recent - their free product doesn't do as good of a job anymore and tends to cause problems if you try and update versions.

I recommend Trend Internet Security. It is lightweight and very user friendly. Trend has been an industry leader in security R&D and solutions for years. They have other free products such as House Call which is a great tool if you think you did get malware on your system - for the techies they have some other advanced products you can get and use - and their customer support has been great any time we've needed them.

Oh, and even if you're overseas, I can still provide Trend to you electronically. You can download it from their site and I can email or message you a security key for it - at less than half the price Trend charges online or in stores.

That sounds cool thanks! I will look into it :D

In response to chrysanthemia

I think my response on this deserves its own entry to open for discussion...

Living on the border, I know Future Shop - pretty much one of those big-box electronic stores trying to provide everything, much like Best Buy.

Places like that look for the quickest, cheapest fix. It is more cost effective for them to just replace the hard drive and reimage it than to pay a technician to actually try and figure out what the problem is.

It is the cheap way to go - for a company only concerned with profits, that is the way they will go each and every time.

If the consumer populace hasn't figured it out yet, big box stores DO NOT care about their customers - they only care about profits. Going to them, you might as well resign yourself to being a dollar-sign in their eyes and nothing else.

Additionally, if you're buying technology products from places like this - especially computers - good luck. You're buying disposable hardware.

Yes, all computers are relatively disposable since technology changes and they go obsolete - but you have two choices:

1. Buy something that will almost definitely fail within 2 years and be more cost effective to simply replace in its entirety or

2. Buy something that will last and work for you for over 5 years before needing to be replaced simply due to age.

In the long run, option 2 WILL save you money - not only money, but time and a whole lot of aggravation.

I know people who have bought systems from places like that and have had few problems and a decent experience with their hardware.

More often than not though, I hear how terrible the products have been - how quickly the break - how not durable they are - how many times they need to be repaired... my work bench is a testament to the shoddy quality of consumer based laptops. I have a cabinet full such laptops - dead and some only a year or two old.

The brand of laptops we recommend - in five years time we've only had to send one out for repair. ONE.

The laptop I'm using is over 3-years old, still works great. I reboot it once every 2 weeks when it starts lagging as all Windows based systems will do. I'm positive I'll get at least another 2 years out of it if I take care of it.

Meanwhile, a friend boasted on Black Friday about the laptop he got for $299. Never guess what? It went back for repair within 2 months and is no longer working at all, and the warranty has been such a hassle he decided to just shelve it and cut his losses.

Such a deal...

I've had the same desktop for 5 years. granted, its clogged up and could run slightly quicker but it does the job I need it for. I have a techie friend who loves to help out all for the cost of a cup of coffee and a few quid if it goes belly-up on me. I'd much rather give my money to someone who actually cares about the quality of service than a company who sees pound signs.

My laptop is around 2 years old, cost a fair bit and as yet, works beautifully. I expect it to serve me well for a good while yet. Thats down to my techie friend giving it the once-over every now and then. I really do appreciate the personal touch as I'm sure your customers do.

As per Morri's request... my desktop:

Real Vampires love Vampire Rave

Plain, XP basic cluttered desktop. I never use it. Can't tell you the last time I clicked an icon on the desktop. I use the Quicklaunch bar for everything.

What's with the few just drifting off into space towards the right? I like that Aspire graphic. Someone nifty with big boobs must have made that.

It's the age- I rarely have to set my alarm clock, as I am up at noon, in plenty of time to work nights. But if I have to set it for something, I ALWAYS wake up about 15 minutes before the damn thing goes off.
