More than I could ever have imagined

22:13 Jun 25 2008
Times Read: 975

My assistant director came into my office and found me crying at my desk. She immediately started asking what was wrong, her voice alarmed. I told her to listen while I read something to her.

In message, Emaerald asked me how I felt about the auction. I answered about how pleased I was. She then told me about members who have come forward with 3 more ideas to raise money and awareness for the Emergency Center and Food Bank where I work.

I have never asked for money here. Not once. But you would be amazed if I shared with you the off-the-record requests that have happened here where a member would ask me in message if they could give a small gift. Sometimes that gift is money. Sometimes it is time, a gift at art to help with fliers, sometimes the patience to build a website, or to send much-needed new computer equipment. A small gift, they say..."I don't have much to give, but I'd like to help in the way that I can." That always makes me smile because everyone with a heart to give believes that their gift is small. Only people who give for the wrong reasons ever cite their donation as large.

There is no you. There is no me. Not in this. I believe that your fingerprints and prayers are all over the work I'm blessed enough to do. "Thank you" seems a little thing. Please try to know how much I mean it. I'm willing my thank you to somehow cross miles and white text to convey the gratitude I feel. Your financial help is the least of what you have given. You have offered affirmation after affirmation to me that this work matters. I believe what we do together has eternal value.

As I've said before, when you demonstrate unyielding passion and belief in what you do, it becomes contagious.

People feel it. People feel how much of yourself you put into your everyday. Your words, your actions... the fact that you LOVE what you do. People will take notice.

The sails you have sewn and unfurled will only propel you forward if you have a powerful enough wind.

Let us be your wind...

The auction in the main forum for the tee shirt signed by Cancer...wow! What an incredibly imaginative way to support a charity. I'm blown away by the ways people on this site have opened their hearts and emptied pockets to help others. The donations and proceeds will be applied 100% to program costs and some very real people will be helped.

Emaerald came up with the idea and approached me about supporting the Center this way, this untried new way. Because I am a woman of faith,I couldn't be happier with an idea that rests in faith itself...the "build it and they will come" concept. What a great way to approach life...it's the only way I know. Oh, and I have had some spectacular face-plants! But nothing is better than trusting to God...or to whatever your construct may be.

I have expressed my gratitude many, many times, but I sometimes think that I have never adequately expressed to you my wonder.

I wish you could see how beautiful you all look to me.

You are in awe? Well, I am too, as I never envisaged it would take off so well with members being so generous! Life is about giving as well as taking, and if we can make one person smile, instead of shedding tears.. then the effort we all make here today is worth it :)

Seven did help me choose the Charity, and with the Meet-up in New Orleans, well it all panned out very nicely indeed. :)

The stripedy boxes are from his mystery admirer, but I won't let the rat out of the bag. I hid his medicine in the truffles and he wagged his tail for more!

The box with the note from Maddy came from the Sevenn/Krista house. Obviously she was snagging money to save up for her buddy! Maddy, Meatball couldn't get his tongue far enough into that cheese bone! He's going to concentrate until the job is done. Savvy had to come see what all the fuss was.

Meatball's Secret Admirer and a good report

MB has a secret admirer! I received a package today at work for him, filled with all sorts of goodies. I looked inside and there's a card, but it isn't signed. Meatball is very polite and would like to say thank you. Please let me know if it was someone here. If you for some reason choose to remain anonymous, please know that you are amazing. It's such an above the bar kind of thing to send a gift. We're grateful for you!

On the NEWS front, he has been getting up the last two days SO much more! Today, my daughter said he tried to get to the door when the doorbell rang. Yesterday, I didn't carry him outside or in. He hop-limped out there all by himself and back in :)

Oh, and to mystery gift-bringer...oh boy is he going to like these treats!

Extensive Wound Care

21:06 Jun 07 2008
Times Read: 1,356

I'm going to link this image instead of posting the image here, and warn some of you that it may be difficult to look at. I have mentioned that MB has a large open wound on his side. These journal entries are for my friends and acquaintances who want to know how we're getting on, but mainly they are for me to have this experience chronicled. They help me to monitor progress and to remember the commitment it takes to love someone, especially our best buddies.

What you'll see in this image is the severity of the wound injury, of course. But it also demonstrates a part of the treatment I have to give him. I pack the wound with raw honey one day, sugar the next. they both have healing properties beneficial to open wound healing. Posting a link so you can read about it. honey for wound aid

In MB's image, I have just treated him with sugar and gone to get my camera. You'll notice the wound is wet. He has been cleaned and dried before the application, but the honey and sugar have this effect. I then put a clean t-shirt on him as a makeshift bandage. In a little while, we'll hose out the wound with soapy antibacterial soap, spray it with a prescription antibacterial spray, t-shirt him for the night, and bring him in. He is also on oral antibiotics. I will periodically add an updated image so that we can watch the process as he heals.

So many people don't realize how much we have around us that actually has healing ability if used as such.

When he's progressed to actual scabs (not before) Calendula cream will help prevent the negative aspects of the scaring that he'll have.

Beastt17
Beastt17

I had assumed his wound was an avulsion but now I see that a huge flap of tissue is simply gone. I'm impressed that they find it possible for this kind of injury to heal through tissue regeneration rather than needing extensive grafting of skin and perhaps other tissues. Fortunately, your boy knows he's loved and cared for and has no real need to worry. It's just a matter of time, care, persistence, love and some bee spit where the bees never intended it to go.

Back Story

23:36 Jun 04 2008

It was brought to my attention that I didn't actually say what caused MB's injury. He was under the neighbor's big diesel truck. His pelvic bone was crushed under the wheel as he was run over. It is fractured in 3 places. It also caused a large open wound on his side.

Update: He's been a good dog since we brought him home, going outside every day and taking care of the stuff doggies are supposed to do on the grass :)

We aren't out of the woods yet, but we're making progress. Thanks again to all who have sent well wishes.

Rough night, but we're figuring out our routine. We even got in a morning hobble before work. Cute, as I tried to keep him from toppling with one hand and my robe from opening with the other. I got to check on him at the midday and he did just fine.

So, we're back out in the garden until the sun goes down and the mosquitoes chase us back indoors. Doesn't he look all Fonzie under his umbrella, his fur blowing in the fanned breeze? And that muy guapo t-shirt! (It functions as a bandage for the wound on his side.) I'm going to get him some shades and dig out the old Sha Na Na 8-tracks!

Sitting outside with my banged up guy, and Savvy lazing near my feet the way only a cat with no conscience can. The garden is beautiful, breeze blowing the scent of herbs and gardenia my way. I picked 4 ripe cherry tomatoes and ate them while standing barefoot in ankle-tickling grass. They were sun-warmed and perfect.

Everything is saturated with a bit of the sacred today. One of those days when all seems right in the world and joy is measured in the sound of a puppy dog lapping and slopping water in his dish as he cools off in the mottled shade of our faithful old oak tree.

And again, I find myself grateful for all that I have.
