So very much to be thankful for

I was thinking Wednesday even though Stabb clearly said Tuesday. I had it in my mind that Wednesday was the 23rd, so the panic ensued in the afternoon when I realized that his dad was touching down at the New Orleans airport at 5. A Father-in-law I'd never met was coming to my house and I hadn't even begun to do obsessive crazy-cleaning which is mandatory for such a situation. Suddenly, you see things like the furry dust lounging on your ceiling fan blades.

I turned the Lost Boys album up to full blast, grabbed my dancing broom and off we went, singing and cleaning. I managed to have everything ready, including a tea service set out - those Brits like their "cuppa." Candles were lit and the whole place was warm and glowy.

He's a doll! He's tall and handsome like his son. He is warm, conversational, and really fun to hang out with. Really cool accent, too! When I offered him the tea, he asked what kind - he was worried that the southern girl was going to put ice in it!

Today, I sent the two men out to do touristy things while I get some cooking done since we'll have dinner here tomorrow. Stabb's first Thanksgiving! It will be amazing to have my kids, parents, husband, sister, and new father-in-law all together.

Mom is still doing great, and dad had his latest chemo treatment. It's been a long road for him, but he looks great and but for the down times due to the infusions, he feels good. He's even gained some weight which ticks him off and makes all us ladies smile and exhale a little.

I picked my oldest daughter up from the airport today. I haven't seen her for a month and it was just wonderful to see her face again, and to watch the two girls catch up. For sisters, they are very very close and they have really missed one another. My car was filled with their banter all the way home and it was sheer joy!

I love nothing so much as having my home filled with people, talking, food, and laughter. I pray that your Thanksgiving will be as blessed as ours.

"When I offered him the tea, he asked what kind - he was worried that the southern girl was going to put ice in it!"

Wise man. Was he forewarned, by chance?

Fish and chips at home with my husband yesterday. Dinner out, a bit of shopping Friday.

Renaissance Faire today. The weather was custom made just for us...a little nip in the air and a blue blue sky. Stabb had TWO turkey leggs. Every year I mix my own perfume oils. This year's may be my favorite! Stabb competed with my sister at the archery range. The juggler kicked ass with his whirling blades OF DEATH! All of Odin's root beer we could drink for a dollar.

Bad british accents, Erin in bloomers and a hiked-up peasant skirt. Me rocking the sock monkey hat. Tasting the KING'S NUTS! Still didn't find that perfect celtic knot blanket, but there is still next year...

My god, what a weekend! Also, we managed to get the camper in for service. Stabb's dad is to visit for Thanksgiving, so we're putting it in the state park 2 miles from our house so he'll have a nice "guest house" all his own. I met his mom and grandmother, but I haven't met his dad yet and I'm really excited.

And now, we're sitting in the living room having Octoberfest beer in front of a roaring fire, watching the football game we recorded. Can this life be real? If I'm in a coma somewhere dreaming this, do NOT wake me up!

I'm hurt and betrayed. We used to unleash a pitiless deluge of scorn and ridicule on people for sharing their (deplorable) photos from ren faire. I thought we did that *together*. What does this so-called "fun" have that I don't? You were probably sodding up your thee's and thou's as if they were period appropriate, too. For shame.

However... hiked up peasant skirts? Compelling arguement. Tell me you snuck in a line from Men In Tights and we're clear.

Fable of the porcupine

02:51 Nov 03 2010
Times Read: 702

It was the coldest winter ever. - Many animals died because of the cold. The

porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together. This way they

covered and protected themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest

companions even though they gave off heat to each other. After awhile, they

decided to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and

frozen. So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions

or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together.

This way they learned to live with the little wounds that were caused by the close

relationship with their companion, but the most important part of it, was the heat

that came from the others. This way they were able to survive.

Moral of the story: The best relationship is not the one that brings together

perfect people, but the best is when each individual learns to live with the

imperfections of others and can admire the other person's good qualities.

*Given to me by a friend, a wonderful nun who volunteers at our ministry.

But, as with the porcupines, we learn we're better off sometimes when we close our eyes to our companion's quills...
