Getting closer...

04:26 Jun 30 2010

...ever gaining, never resting... getting there. Slowly, oh so slowly, but I will overcome!

Don't inquire about the hidden meaning in this... there is none. It is nonsensical and pointless. Move along now... return to your homes. Nothing to see here...

Long day...

02:01 Jun 27 2010
Times Read: 1,094

...started an early morning taking the kids fishing. Through a special program with the Boys & Girls club and the county environmental protection agency, they had a fishing instruction morning. The kids learned how to cast, tie knots, bait a hook and best of all, they got to catch fish. Fun for all, but a lot of work for dad!

Hence, I didn't get to take many pictures of them - tough to juggle a camera, three fishing poles, bait, removing hooks from fish, keeping the 5 yr old from falling in the lake, keeping all three of them from hooking someone else...

*whew*

Then we raced off to the town parade that Morri and Pai marched in with the Buffalo Dauschaund Club. I took over 700 pictures of the parade - ran up and down the parade route a couple times after getting the kids settled with their grandparents.

I'm sure Morri will have a LOT of pictures in her journal as soon as she takes copies of the ones she wants. :)

Now I'm going to chill out with Morri and Pai - after a nice, hearty dinner - lots of lounging for the rest of the night.

Enquiring minds want to know...

Do you think it would be unprofessional for a photographer to approach someone they do not know, in public, explain what they do as a photographer and ask him/her if they would be interested in modeling?

Can't help to ask. But it helps to have some proof or at least a professional looking camera and some equipment when you ask. You don't want to look like a GWC.

birra

21:09 Jun 25 2010

Obviously a business card including a web address, phone number, mailing address and email address would be offered... photographers don't always carry cameras with them.

Daire
Daire
21:12 Jun 25 2010

Yeah, but it always helps.

I found most people I asked said no when I had nothing with me and most said yes when I had the camera with me.

No no and no again.

It's not professional for you to walk up to someone and say "I bet your computer is malfunctioning, let me look at it."

Duhhh, I just noticed I said "can't help", I meant can't HURT.

RedQueen

Morri, computer work and camera work are two decidedly different things, sugar. Most people became huge stars because someone walked up and said they had the look they were after. Granted, alot of creepoids would do the same thing, but I'm with Birra- if you have a business card, explain your request appropriately, and ask nicely, I see no reason why this isn't a viable way to find new models for your work. It will also get you off the "professionals who can't think outside their own little box" that you have been complaining about lately.....

ThothLestat
ThothLestat
21:33 Jun 25 2010

I don't know if 'unprofessional' is the right word. I suppose it's less offensive for photographers than it would be for, let's say, advertising agents or used car salesmen.

Hey, you look like you could use some advertising. Have you considered billboards or radio spots? I'm going to give my card. You give me a call when you're ready. First session is free. Bring your mom.

Different lines of work require different approach techniques.I think alot of beautiful models and such are found at the spur of the moment and are approached just as you have suggested.Of course you must always takes the right precautions if approached, but no,I dont think its unprofessional. But then,I am not in that world,so I really dont know the proper protocol.

Having a professional business card can go a long way and if you ask and they seem unsure offer references that they can check to make them feel at ease. or tell then to come to your place of business( hopefully not in your home ) and that they can bring someone else with them if they would feel more at ease.

I had to something like this for my black and white photo class in college. I went up and down Duval street asking people is I could take thier picture for an assignment. It was wrid at first but after a while it became easier to ask people. I would show them my student idea before I asked just to make sure they didn't think I was some freaking weirdo.

birra
birra
02:18 Jun 26 2010

See, that's what I'm thinking - you approach in a non-threatening way. Explain who you are, hand over something that identifies you. Explain what you observed and then give them the option without being pushy.

"Hey, I'm Birra - I'm a photographer and I work on a lot of projects such as (describe a project / hand card). You can view some of my work on the website on the card and all my contact information is there as well. I was just noticing (feature about person) that would make you perfect for an art concept I've been working on. If you would like to help me with it, you would be compensated. If you don't want to - hey, it's all good. No worries, I'll let you go without another word of it, but keep my card if you change your mind."

Something like that.

...the deed is done. All of my chickens went in for processing this morning and are now sitting in a cooler chilling on ice.

Who wants pictures?

They need to stay that way for about 3 days to let the meat age a bit and all the blood and other fluids drain out of the breast meat.

They'll be well frozen by Friday though...

Is that expensive to do- having them processed?

birra
birra
20:49 Jun 22 2010

Including a 20lb bag of ice, 6 chickens of processing was $15.

I bought the chickens for $1 each. ($21) They went through about $30 in food in 8 weeks ($51).

So in total, 6 chickens cost about $8.50 each. Per pound, that's about $1.70 per... BUT

I have 6 meaty, organically grown chickens that I know exactly what went into them.

My next batch I'm considering upping it to 8 or 10. Once everything is together, the per pound cost goes down as you increase the quantity.

How many chickens can you eat though. That is the question you really need to answer. Or are you chicken...........ohhhhh that was bad.

How amazing it is....

04:33 Jun 21 2010
Times Read: 1,220

...sometimes I have to remember to consider all the wealth I have in my life right now. Especially my kids.

Saturday they helped me get the picnic tables and benches out of winter storage at their house. A few of the benches out-weigh the boys but they worked together to move them. As a reward, they got the first of several of my old, steel Tonka trucks that I had when I was their age. They're all still in good shape and have been in storage for ages. A bulldozer. They were excited, even if the weekend's activities prevented them from using it much.

My daughter asked me what she could earn when she helps out. I asked her what she wanted... she said, to spend more time with me.

I cried.

I cried again today when she gave me her fathers day gift she had been working on... sea shells glued to a board and a poem... it was beautiful. :)

She also made the suggestion of getting me a wok for father's day... it amazes me how much she listens to me and knows me.

It amazes me how good all three of them really are. They're young, they will wander and get distracted so shopping trips are non stop efforts to keep them moving, to stay on task... of course we take breaks at the samples and demonstration tables - hey, if they're letting you try something new, I'm all for it! But there is never a fight over what we get or don't get. I never have that battle of endless, "I want! Can we get this?" and of course, never the ensuing tantrum when the answer is "not this time," like I see so many other parents deal with.

I see those parents. Sometimes I lose my patience too. Sometimes I have to step back, take a deep breath and remind myself, they're kids. Step back and remind myself to be patient and keep a level head... even when the youngest draws on the side of my car with a rock... *ahem* He's five... it's a car. He is more important.

Yesterday he had a great time at the party we went to with the lady offering face painting. And then he painted her's. I wish I could post the pictures - absolute hilarity, but I'm sure in his mind it was a masterpiece.

The middle child is my tough guy, with a sensitive heart. He is the one who stands by me in the rain, helping cut roots of a fallen tree. The one who will join me in tackling a task. The one who will look at a scrape or a cut and say, "Eh, I'm fine... but can I get a band-aid?" But his heart breaks so quickly - like when he's playing a game of kick-ball with his cousins and they won't throw him the ball because they don't trust he can catch it.... for those times, we sit and talk, and he listens... and his heart slowly mends.

I'm blessed by these three.

Today we went and took pictures. I love capturing their faces, naturally. Having fun, smiling... today's subject was taste-testing citrus fruits... lemons, limes, grapefruit and oranges... and capturing their reactions. We juggled fruit, we threw them at each other... I captured a lot of amazing pictures...

..but every picture of them to me is amazing.

At the end of it, my daughter and I took the remaining lemons and made lemonade...

*sigh*

I have a lot in life to be thankful for... but little compares to them.

...as an answer to Bloodlife - soccer is an action sport, so pictures of girls running full speed can be troublesome. I generally weed out the blurry and nothing but numbers type pictures and go for the ones that show good action, and the face of the players. Generally, that is what their parents would want to see -their child in motion.

But, that's just me.

I don't do poses... you know? Some of the pictures of warmups look like the old "Heisman Pose" football cards, but they weren't told to do that - that is just the action I captured...

...I guess there is a part of me that is still like a child. Like when my kids really want to see a movie and are excited about it, I get caught up in their excitement. Even if I don't want them to watch it yet, I end up saying, "Oh... OK. Let's get it."

Tonight we watched the first Harry Potter movie. I was resisting for a while because I wanted my oldest boy to have read the whole first book before seeing the movie. I believe with something like that, you have to imagine it on your own before you let someone else fill your mind with their own visions.

But... I caved.

We enjoyed the movie. They were excited to see the story's conclusion.

The last 80 pages of the book will still be enjoyable, I'm sure.
