This journal entry is about sex, violence, under-age sex and the general stupidity of people.

Just to give the requisite warnings. And/or, teaser. Heh.

So Morri and I watched a few episodes of the show Sparticus last night. Pretty good show if you're into over-the-top violence and Cinemax late night soft-core with a touch of full frontal nudity...

I was thinking about the show while I was mindlessly mowing the lawn this morning. The producers claimed that they wanted to offer an accurate depiction of what life in Ancient Rome was like... so... sex, violence, an appreciation of beauty and liberal views on the value of life and relationship commitment.

Which got me thinking to a comment someone made in the vamp box, regarding a certain friend who has returned and how admins here monitor the public chat room. The comment was, paraphrasing, "Someone can speak openly about having sex with 16-year old girls (which is legal age of consent in his country) but we have to watch our language here..."

Ok, point taken. It is a matter of social values, law and sensitivities of the VR viewing public. As far as I know, the "sex with 16 year olds" conversation didn't involve any graphic descriptions - correct me if I'm wrong. But this is topic of social values, not absolutes. Remember, only about 5 generations ago, the average age of consent in our country (the United States) was 14, whereas what was deemed publically appropriate language (profanity) hasn't changed all that much. The f-word is still considered obscene, just as it was back then.

This thought led to another; why has this age of consent changed, and why is our society so hung up of topics, descriptions and displays of a sexual nature being so inappropriate?

As our society moved through the 20th century, we quickly became one of the most advanced, or at least viewed as one of the most advanced, western culture civilizations - yet, we seem to have lost the ability to deal with some of our most basic instincts as animals. Turn to, of course, legislating them instead of embracing, understanding and dealing with them.

If Sparticus is indeed a peek at what life was like in Ancient Rome, they were obviously more in tune and comfortable with sex as an important part of human nature. Whereas our society has a little conniption fit when a female nipple is almost exposed on television.

Yet, there is little uproar when a show such as CSI include violent, downright horrifying scenes of violence.

So have we lost touch with the intrinsic parts of our nature and instinct that allow us to appreciate love, beauty, the importance of and who we are as sexual beings... and in turn, compensate for that lost with an increased fascination on our violent, animalistic side?

Despite our advanced findings regarding emotional and mental development, biology would strongly suggest procreation in humans begins around the ages 12 to 14... evolution would suggest monogamy is just not the right path for us as a species - so why has our society moved toward forcing these changes and values upon us?

Just putting that out there for a Sunday morning...

ahhhhh......looks like Viridian is back,,,lol

Might I also say that VR is a little clip of TV and it's mores as well: Nipples are a no-no, but a profile can be slam eat UP with graphic, horrifying, gory pictures of all kinds of violence and mutilation, and that's ok. So is it art reflecting life, or life reflecting art?

Morrigon
Morrigon
19:57 May 30 2010

I saw a disturbing rape and murder scene on CSI or a show like it. That made me shake my head. Janet Jackson's nipple is a cause for horror and apologies and yet a woman being raped is considered part of an entertaining episode on TV?

Hmm...

birra
birra
20:06 May 30 2010

RedQueen - VR is bound by the same laws and regulations as any other online media source. A nipple can be construed as pornography, forcing the publisher (Cancer and his business) to provide legal documentation proving the "model" is of age.

On a site of 17,000 members, that would be darn near impossible. Easier to keep tabs on who is violating terms of service than hunt down a signed legal document proving compliance every time someone flashes a "naughty bit."

It goes along with how our society needs to define everything as "appropriate" or "inappropriate." I have no idea when the human body - which basically comes in two varieties, male and female - became inappropriate to be viewed by humans.

Will have to put more research into this subject but I do belive a lot of our "hang ups" come from censorship and how it has gotten out of controle in the US. I do belive it also had something to do with religious influences upon people and that extending into buisnesses. I will have to look all of this up again. I did once years ago. Basicaly it comes down to.. someone said they didnt like something someone else was doing, so put presure on someone else to stop it and whala.. Legislation. :D Dont quote me on all that though cause as I said.. I have to find my research again to be certain.

birra
birra
14:49 Jun 04 2010

I did a research project on this subject for a Psychology of Sexuality class in college - it all stems back to the Puritan days. Although our nation believes in a separation of church and state, the catholic church and their interests are still heavily influential on our government and legislation. Christian beliefs, in one form or another, account for 80% of the population.

I hate to slam religion, but you know... christians it seems have always had a thing for violence and have always deemed sex sinful, impure, etc...

A direct reflection on our society.

Walking...

Times Read: 1,210

...I was walking Pai around dusk tonight and in the northern sky I saw a bright, brilliant meteor... it descended quickly, a bright white light against an ocean blue, starless sky.

In the fading daylight, with a large, bright moon and clear skies, normally you won't see meteors unless they are close and bright.

This one was. It was one of those moments of wondering what it was my eyes were seeing... a plane? No, no flashing lights, decending way too fast... fireworks? Nope, too smooth in a downward trajectory and not fading...

...and by the time I could fully process it, it was out of site behind the houses I was near.

Enjoyed a very late dinner tonight... along with a good merlot. I guess that is the only bachelor part of me... staying up late, eating dinner at obnoxious hours... same stuff I used to do when I travelled...

...speaking of which, I really feel the need to get back into it. I need to start some serious contract hunting.

...regardless, I still don't make a good bachelor... I actually eat well balanced meals...

Remember those days of college when you would have dinner at 2AM and the meal consisted almost entirely of condiments?

Heh... and for tonight's entree, Heinz 57, delicately mixed with a packet of Kraft Mayo from that gas-station sandwich last week and a packet of duck sauce left over from that chinese take-out you had back in the fall semester...

Ahhh.. those were the days...

m: and advertising for their post.

b: and advertising for their post, too.

m: Plus it would be more advertising for the post.

b: Right, AND even more advertising for the post!

m: It would be like the emails were advertisements for the post.

b: This is true, and with so many people using their domain for email, think of all the additional advertisements for the post.

m: *dies*

m: I'm imagining us doing this while Tim is sitting at the table, just going back and forth

Left to right in this picture are Pepper (an Araucana) Omelette and Ginger (Golden Comets). At this point they were only about 4 or 5 days old.

Here is Pepper enjoying some time out in the sun and the lawn - about 3 weeks old in this picture.

The newest, Clover, a Black Austrolorp. We just got her yesterday - we're guessing she's about 10 days old.

And Clover again - hanging with her new buds at the office. Also seen in this picture are my Cornish Cross chickens... I think that might be Fajita and Cordon Bleu... or maybe Quesadilla... or Florentine? I'm not sure, they all look the same...

...we got a little baby Black Australorp chicken to add to our layers today. She's a bit younger than the other 3 new layers but she should be able to go into the main coop shortly after they do.

She adjusted to the 6 at the office as she spent the afternoon here, although they picked at her a bit at first - I think they were just a little confused by her coloring. Their world has been nothing but little yellow fuzzy companions until now, and then being introduced to a little black fuzzy companion... I'm not sure they knew what to make of it.

According to the information sheet on the breed, the Australorps actually hold the world record for egg production, so we have high hopes for our new addition.
