A Lesson Of Change

11:05 Feb 08 2014
Times Read: 1,089

A lesson of change; change your words and change the world; I give you a gift, a gift of feelings, inspiration, hopes and dreams. Take the time to reflect in what I say today. Feel the emotion of what I'm saying; and you just might find yourself crying, you might bow your heads in shame and you might lose your breath. Its ok, I wanted you too. It's the same way you feel when you hear a child cry, it's the same emotion you feel when the pain of someone close to you dies. Hear what I say and listen as if you can hear my voice. Remember an emotion that warmed your heart and made the tears flow like a gentle river. Be reminded of the compassion that brought you to your knees, remember the excitement that touched so deep your soul cried deeper than before. It's like the passing of grandparents we once love so dearly but gave up on them each passing day, till you stood over them as tears race down your face. It's the voice of your baby singing out of key in her school play, but never giving up as the show continues. It's the final race, yet speed isn't important as more importantly than just crossing the finish line, knowing your parents raised a champion. It's a movie that moves you in such a way that a lump forms in your throat and stops your breathing and you gasp so deeply every feeling is like your last and every expression is worn on your face. It's the moment your children says I love you; for no apparent reason; but it’s worth everything in the world to hear over and over. It's the moment when we hold someone's feeling their grasp, when you’re frightened yet the comfort is stronger than their grip. Its tears we shed alone in the darkness one more night, wishing and dreaming these nightmares will just fade away like the falling moon. The silent screams of abuse; that darkens our eyes and cover our ribs. It's these emotions we hide and wear like scares of war. But no matter how broken we are, we find comfort in knowing we are compassionate and no matter what the pain our tears fall. We know some tears fall from love; love that's stronger than any pain we’ve ever had. But remember this; our words can heal or break the souls of everyone around us. Use your words wisely and compassionately for we can become healers instead of breakers of humanity...

A brave, young warrior fell in love with the daughter of a chief. The chief did not like the young man, who was called Blue Jay. So the chief thought to himself and decided to come up with a scheme to prevent his daughter from getting married. He set a price for the bride that he was sure that Blue Jay could not pay. Bring me the hide of the White Deer; said the chief. The warrior believed that animals that were all white were magical. “The price for my daughter is one white deer." Then the chief laughed. The chief knew that an all, white deer, an albino, was very rare and would be very hard to find. White deerskin was the best material to use in a wedding dress, and the best white deer skin came from the albino deer. Blue Jay went to his beloved, whose name was Bright Moon. "I will return with your bride price in one moon, and we will be married. This I promise you." Taking his best bow and his sharpest arrows Blue Jay began to hunt. Three weeks went by, and Blue Jay was often hungry, lonely, and scratched by briars. Then, one night during a full moon, Blue Jay saw a white deer that seemed to drift through the moonlight. When the deer was very close to where Blue Jay hid, he shot his sharpest arrow. The arrow sank deep into the deer’s heart. But instead of sinking to his knees to die, the deer began to run. And instead of running away, the deer began to run toward Blue Jay, his red eyes glowing, his horns sharp and menacing. A month passed and Blue Jay did not return as he had promised Bright Moon. As the months dragged by, the tribe decided that he would never return. But Bright Moon never took any other young man as a husband, for she had a secret. When the moon was shining as brightly as her name, Bright Moon would often see the white deer in the smoke of the campfire, running, with an arrow in his heart. She lived hoping the deer would finally fall, and Blue Jay would return. To this day the white deer is very sacred of our people, and the white deerskin is still the most favorite material for a Native wedding dress with the bond of love, hope and dreams...
