Bloodlife just had a good journal entry about judging people. It got me thinking about...

"Don't judge me!"

Isn't it interesting how often that petulant statement is used by people who know they're doing something worthy of judgement? You can almost hear the whiny "waaaah" that accompanies it.

You WILL be judged. We all will. Little things like the clothes we wear, our haircuts, our figures, and the bigger things like the ethics we adhere to or stray conveniently from.

How does that affect you? It's a common reaction that young people have when they thump their chests and loudly proclaim that they don't care...but it's hard for me to hear over the "waaaah."

It is important to both care and not care...to know the difference between which is wise and when. Judgement can be useful in assessing whether you are right or maybe someone else is. It can become a tool for self-reflection. That is wise.

Judgement can also be a reflection of someone else's immaturity and/or ignorance in a matter of which you have more mastery. In such cases, not caring about judgement is where the wisdom lies.

In either case, the truly wise person knows that people will have opinions. That is all that judgement truly is -

Based on my criteria, I believe X to be:

good

bad

foolish

smelly

cool

dangerous

schmenky

all of the above

The English-speaking world may be divided into

  • those who neither know nor care what a split infinitive is,

  • those who do not know, but care very much,

  • those who know and condemn,

  • those who know and distinguish.

Those who neither know nor care are the vast majority, and are a happy folk, to be envied by most of the minority classes.
