6/30/20 0730 wake up. It is going to be a long hot summer, especially with this pandemic. The politicians are making excuses for there people. The people are like sheep going after anything that is shiny. Not knowing not caring that the wolves are circling, taking the weak, the sick, the old, the young. Good for the wolves not so good for the people. There are a few quiet and hidden that will block the wolf's. They are the tip of the spear. Hard, rough people who watch the signs then strike. They are the scouts and warriors of the tribe, ever sharpening steel with steel, ever polishing their mirror. This the way it has been and the way it is. This is the way of the warrior on an ongoing journey of self mastery and service to others.

They still hide money in books.

As a young boy, the famed basketball coach George Raveling learned an invaluable lesson about the power of both knowledge and ignorance from his grandmother, who raised him.

“Why did the slave masters hide their money in books, George?” she asked the young boy, standing together in her kitchen.

“I don’t know, grandma,” he said.

“Because they knew the slaves wouldn’t open them,” she said.

There’s a reason it was illegal to teach slaves to read. There is a reason that every totalitarian regime has burned and banned books. Knowledge is power. It sounds like a cliche, but cliches only sound that way because of the generally accepted truth at their core. What is less of a cliche but actually more true, is the converse of that idea: A lack of knowledge is weakness, it engenders supplication and makes resistance harder.

From this early lesson, George Raveling came to see reading as a moral duty. To not read, to remain in ignorance, was not only to be weak, it was to ignore the people who had fought so hard, who had struggled at such great cost to read and to provide for future generations the right and the ability to do so. It was to spit in the face of Frederick Douglass, of Booker T. Washington, and, of course, of Martin Luther King, Jr. who Raveling had gotten to know.

It is worth pointing out today that money is still hidden in the pages of books—though not because someone put it there in order to keep it from you. Think about how many people want to get better--at something, anything, everything. Look at how many people are desperate to be successful, or to extricate themselves from this cycle of mediocrity that has trapped so many of our generation. These people look everywhere for the solution to their problems. They seek out secret formulas, shortcuts, gurus. They will turn their entire world upside down before they stop and look at the one place where you can always be sure to find answers—the book shelf.

Marcus Aurelius talks about going “straight to the seat of intelligence.” That’s what books are. Epictetus found freedom from slavery, long before he was legally free. How? In the writings of the Stoics, in the words of Musonius Rufus.

We read because it makes us powerful. When we don’t read, we become weak—easy to manipulate, less than what we are capable of being. It’s in our self-interest to read (there’s money in it), but it’s also our moral duty.~the daily stoic

Those who will not take a chance seldom have one thrust upon them.

Success always involves risk. You must take a chance by investing your time, money, and effort. It pays to be thoughtful and deliberate in your analyses of opportunities, but don’t let timidity hold you back. Because you have worked hard to develop those things you must risk, it is natural for you to place a high value on them. But what good are they if you do not put them to use? You will recognize opportunity only to the extent that you are willing to consider risking your time, money, and effort. Being confident gives you the courage to face risk and act when opportunity arises. No one on earth is going to force success upon you; you will find it only to the degree that you actively seek it out. ~ Napoleon Hill

Important notice: This principle presents the means by which the entire Science of Success philosophy can best be assimilated and put to practical use. You cannot get the most out of the other sixteen principles without understanding and applying this one. You should study it thoroughly to understand its meaning.

At birth each of us figuratively brings with him two sealed envelopes: one is labeled Rewards, and the other Penalties. In the first envelope is a list of the benefits we may enjoy by taking possession of our own mind and using it for the attainment of the things we desire in life. In the second is a list of the consequences nature will exact from us if we neglect to control our mind and direct it toward desirable, worthwhile objectives.

The foregoing paragraph is so rich in significance that it will pay you to read it, analyze it and meditate on it before you go ahead with the remainder of this lesson. Read it at least three times.

In this lesson we shall break the seals of these two envelopes and present you with their contents. But more important than this, you will discover for yourself that these sealed envelopes are real. They can be the means of putting you on the success beam, enabling you to ride to victory and a destination of your own choosing.

You will not understand the full meaning of this lesson unless you are ready to receive it. And you will not be ready to receive it until you have mastered the six preceding lessons.

There are two things which nature discourages and severely penalizes: (a) a vacuum (emptiness) and (b) idleness (lack of action). Remove any muscle of the body from active use, and it will atrophy (waste away) and become useless. Tie an arm to your side and remove it from action and in time it, too, will wither and become useless. The same law which governs other portions of the body governs the brain, where the vibrations of thought are organized and released.

A positive mind finds a way it can be done, a negative mind looks for all the ways it can't be done.

You either use your brain for controlled thinking in connection with things you want, or nature steps in and uses it to grow a crop of negative circumstances you do not want. You have a choice in this situation: You can take possession of your thought power, or you can let it be influenced by the stray winds of chance and circumstances you do not desire. But you cannot sit idly by and thus free yourself from the influence of these two sealed envelopes.

Nature allows you to fix your mind on whatever you desire. Nature also allows you to create your own plan for attaining your desire. She crowns all your efforts with those benefits which come in the sealed envelope labeled Rewards. But she discourages idleness and penalizes it wherever it exists.

Out of this truth has grown the saying: Success attracts more success while failure attracts more failure - a truth which you may have observed many times although you may not have analyzed why it happens this way.

If you put your mind to work with a positive mental attitude and believe in success as your right, your belief will guide you unerringly toward whatever your definition of success may be. If you adopt a negative mental attitude and fill your mind with thoughts of fear and frustration, your mind will attract to you the penalties of these undesirable thoughts.

Or you may make no attempt to control and direct your mind, opening it wide to every influence with which you come in contact, and it will yield you the things listed in the second sealed envelope, which are the Penalties you must pay for your neglect to possess and direct your mind.

Now let us open these two sealed envelopes and see what they contain:

REWARDS

(For those who take possession of their minds and direct them toward desirable objectives.)

a. The privilege of placing yourself on the success beam which attracts only the circumstances which make for success.
b. Sound health, both physically and mentally.
c. Financial independence.
d. A labor of love in which to express yourself.
e. Peace of mind.
f. Applied faith which makes fear impossible.
g. Enduring friendships.
h. Longevity and a well-balanced life.
i. Immunity against all forms of self-limitation.
j. The wisdom to understand yourself and others.

PENALTIES

(To be paid by those who neglect to take possession of their minds and direct them toward desirable objectives.)

a. Poverty and misery all your life.
b. Mental and physical ailments of many kinds.
c. Self-limitations which bind you to mediocrity all the days of your life.
d. Fear, in all its destructive forms.
e. Dislike of the occupation by which you earn a living.
f. Many enemies, few friends.
g. Every brand of worry known to mankind,
h. A victim of every negative influence you encounter.
i. Subjection to the influence and control of other people at their will.
j. A wasted life which gives nothing to the betterment of mankind.

These lists comprise the catalog of Rewards and Penalties. Which of these lists will you choose as your lot in life?

You must embrace and use the one, or have the other forced upon you. There is no halfway point, no compromise. You are on trial as a citizen of life. You are the judge and the jury - the attorney for the defense and the prosecutor. The final verdict as to what happens to you throughout life will, therefore, be of your own making. There is no higher court of appeals in this world.

It you haven’t the willpower to keep your physical body in repair, you also lack the power of will to maintain a positive mental attitude in other important circumstances that control your life.

A Positive Mental Attitude is not developed in a single decision to replace negative thoughts with their positive equivalent. It is a sustained commitment that requires personal discipline, the same kind of discipline that is required to stay in shape and maintain your physical health. It is a commitment that must be reinforced daily, or it is soon forgotten and cast upon the scrap heap of good intentions. When you take charge of your fate and determine that you will live positively in every aspect of your life — physical and mental — you will receive an extra benefit. Positive physical conditioning will reinforce your Positive Mental Attitude, and your positive attitude will help you stay in better physical condition. -- Napolean Hill

It’s a sure thing that you’ll not finish if you don’t start.

An ancient proverb says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” You have probably known people nearing the end of their life’s journey who looked back and said, “If only I had done things differently…. If only I had taken advantage of that opportunity when it came along.” Unfulfilled lives are filled with “if onlys.” They are the refrain of the timid souls whose lives were finished before they ever really got started. Life is filled with many opportunities — for great successes and spectacular failures. It is up to you to seize the initiative, to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. You are condemned to a life of mediocrity — unless you get into action. Don’t delay; do it today! ~ Napoleon Hill

You Can't Always Get What You Want"

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was a footloose man
No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was a footloose man
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, well, you might find
You get what you need

And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, well, you just might find
You get what you need
Yeah, oh baby

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
I said to him
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need
Oh, yeah

You get what you need
Yeah, oh baby

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need
