In Erickson's view to achieve a healthy personality, a person must be able to successfully resolve a crisis at any of the eight stages of development.These stages are;
Infancy
Early Child hood
Preschool
School Age
Adolescent
Young Adult
Mature
Every crisis situation is defined by a pair of opposing possibilities, such as integrity versus despair. A healthy resolution for it does not mean moving totally to the positive side or to the negative side but gives you the option. But healthy development requires a beneficial balance of both positive to negative to counteract one another.
I was born into an upper middle class family in a historical coastal town in Massachusetts. I was raised in an Authoritarian home. My father being former military and in law enforcement. M y life was resigned to this end. I married and had a child after graduation prompting me to join the military.
I had originally enlisted in the split option program in 1986 and out processed in December of 1993. I saw combat on 3 continents in my time in the service. The first was Operation Just Cause, The second was Desert Shield and the third was in Mogadishu. After the Service I went to work for several International Security Firms enabling me to see the world and stay in a strictly disciplined work environment.
For several years I worked as an Executive Security Specialist traveling the world. I then transitioned into civilian Law Enforcement. I joined a local Sheriffs Department and worked as a Patrolman and as a Corrections Officer for several year until I retired from a job related injury while on duty.
I then became a stay at home dad for several years raiseing my 3 children. Which I did for may years until my divorce. I decided to then start on a new path by starting back in college and strengthening my education.
It is my intention to graduate with a degree in Psychology and Sociology. This will then allow me to go to graduate school so that I may get my psychologists license. So that I may become a clinician in a local Community Mental Health Agency and give back to my community.
I conclusion I have found that Erikson's Stages of Development most apply. They are formulaic and proven. Making each stage easy to understand and be applicable to my life. The way my life has unfolded is laid out in front of me by these stages. Also i found this class to be very challenging but an excellent learning experience. It should me that I may not always excel at what I do but that I need to continue on trying to do my best with something I find to be difficult.
