It had been a week since I sort of slept with my best friend Nick. I hadn't meant for it to happen, its just... things sort of happened.

I have gone through some pretty intense measures to avoid him. I dont think I could handle his gaze, or the questions we would both want to ask.

The end of the week finally arrived, so I settled into the couch for a relaxing day of laziness. I was lounging on the couch, listening to my favorite band, when the door bell rang. I rolled my eyes.

I went to the door and opened it. When our eyes met, my hear stopped in its tracks. Here he was. It was Nick.

"Uh.. hi" I said feeling awkward.

I noticed the chill outside and asked him to come in. I stood back and allowed him in. He had a little trouble with his scarf, it had gotten tangled right behind his head. So I helped him out. After we got it off, he turned around and there we were. Close. Eyes locked. I dont know about him, but my pulse was racing.

I moved away quickly, and sunk into the couch. He sat down on the chair oppisite me.

"So how have things been for you lately?" I asked, trying to feel the awkward silence.

"Really? Your going to play that card?"

"I'm not sure I follow"

"Your going to act as though nothing happened."

I looked down at my feet, face burning. "Listen, I think we were both drunk that night-"

"Oh please Jared, we were neither one even close to a buzz."

I looked up. And there were those deep eyes. The ones that told stories that very few people had heard. One of the most beautiful sets I had ever seen.

I massaged my temple."Nick... we cant be together."

"And why the hell not?"

I realized there was no reason I could give. He moved from the chair to the couch, right beside me. His body was almost a magnet to me. I had to fight the urge to just collapse there. He reached a hand out to touch my shoulder and that was all it took. A simple touch. I curled into his side. I sobbed, for some reason old wounds bursting open.

"It's all my fault, Nick."

"No, nothing is your fault" He consoled me.

"Yes. They wouldn't be dead if I hadnt insisted we go that night."

I contiued like that. Sobbing. But not the kind that shake your body... but the kind that rattle your soul.

And he contiued like that. Holding me. Consoling me.

How he could hold a monster in his arms was beyond my logic.
