NEWTON - Three brothers enrolled in Catawba Elementary School were passengers in a car involved in a fatal collision Wednesday at the intersection of N.C. 10 and N.C. 16.
Cody Storey, 11, died from injuries sustained in the crash. His brothers, Tyler and Isaiah Trivette, 12 and 10, respectively, were transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center, where they were listed in critical condition.
Later that night they were transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where they remain in critical condition, Trooper S.R. Lineberger of the Highway Patrol said Friday.
Five people were in the car when it ran the red light on N.C. 10 eastbound and was crushed by an oncoming tractor-trailer truck headed south on N.C. 16. The impact killed the car's driver, Joyce White, 56, and her passengers Ruby Leatherman, 66, and grandson, Storey.
A letter distributed to parents of Catawba Elementary on Thursday informed them about the accident and actions the school is taking to help students come to terms with the death of their classmate.
"We worked very hard to provide your child with support and loving reassurance as they were informed of this difficult news this morning upon arrival in their homerooms," stated the letter. "Students were given opportunities to visit with counselors and adults in small groups or individually if this was a need that they requested or we felt would be beneficial."
The letter encourages parents to call the school with any concerns and pledges to let parents know if their children show signs of emotional stress.
"We will watch closely for any behaviors or emotions that are out of the norm for your child and will let you know of any observations we note," it says.
