Paris is a yogin who is on the journey to restore control of Earth to its original inhabitants. In order to do that he much fight the Grells, who are ruled by the First One. Paris also has to choose between his love interest, Leah and his teacher, Mauria.
Badlands accurately portrays the history of African Americans throughout their history in the U. S. and give an interesting insight on how these actions could affect the future. Washington uses Paris to show the world the struggles that African Americans go through and that makes him just as much relevant today as in the future. Another thing that makes Badlands a good read is the physical and mental training that Paris goes through as a yogin. Washington does a good job of exploring the student-teacher relationships of Ori, a Grell Noble and Mauria, his yogin equal. The ultimate lesson being that all things don't come easy and that everything is not so simple.
