1. What is VampireRave.com?

VampireRave.com is the largest online database about everything vampire. We endeavor to catalog everything and anything about vampires.

2. Why do you do this?

The Vampire has always held my utmost fascination. Search as I might, I couldn't find a comprehensive online database about vampire fact, fiction, and lore. There are some very good websites out there (and some very poor ones too!), but no all-inclusive one-stop sites. So I made my own.

3. What does my 'Status' mean?

When you sign up for a free Vampire Rave account, the system tracks your site usage. As you spend more time here, your status increases. Special privileges are granted at higher status levels. Having a higher status means your ratings carry more weight throughout the site. Future site features are planned that will more heavily utilize the status system. You can read more about Status Levels here.

The top two positions, Master Vampire and The Prince, are administrator positions and users with these positions administer and maintain this website.

4. How does my status change?

Status advances are the result of a number of factors. The time you spend here, the pages you view, the things you rate, and the database submissions you make are all taken into consideration. You can find out more about this subject here.

5. How do I block/unblock a user in the Message Center?

The block user link is easy to find, it's right under the delete message link. If you scroll to the bottom of the Message Center page, you will see a listing of all of your blocked users. You can also unblock users there.

6. Why don't I see message quoting when I am replying to a message?

Message quoting is automatic. When you reply to a message, the message you are replying to will be appended to the bottom of your reply. The system was designed this way to force consistency for all Vampire Rave members. Because of this, you should realize that if you hit reply, and then change the recipient on the composition screen, the new recipient will be quoted the message you hit reply from. If you want to send a message to a Vampire Rave member without quoting, click Send New Message, not reply.

7. Why is there a limit on the number of messages I can send?

In the past, there were no limits on the number of messages a member could send. Then the children started joining Vampire Rave en masse. A few of them found it funny to flood other members message box, so something had to be done. Now a new member must earn the right to send an unlimited number of messages.

The limits are as follow:
Levels 1 - 3 10 messages per 24 hour period
Levels 4 - 9 30 messages per 24 hour period
Levels 10+ Unlimited messages
This policy also helps to protect your Message Box against spam.

Any member who is caught message bombing another member will have their account suspended for infinity. If you are a victim of message bombing, do not delete the messages. Contact Cancer.

8. How do I create/change my avatar?

Avatar generation is automatic. It is created from the first (primary) picture in your profile, provided that picture is a jpeg. You can have a gif as your primary picture, but doing this will result in you not having an avatar (Some members may choose this option). Whenever you change your primary picture your avatar will change.

9. Why can't I post to the Forum?

To start a new thread, you must be at least level 12. To reply to a thread, you must be at least level 5. These limitations are imposed so that new members will spend some time reading posts in the Forum, learn what is allowed, not allowed, and learn about the Forum's general tone.

10. Why can't I edit my Forum posts?

Only administrators can edit Forum posts. This is done to maintain the integrity of the Forum. If members were allowed to change their posts, threads would soon stop making sense.

11. Why was my post to the Forum deleted?

Administrators follow a set of content guidelines regarding Forum posts. Reasons for post deletion may include (but are not limited to):
  • Posts of a political nature
  • Posts that ridicule the philosophical tenants of any religion
  • Rude, obnoxious, hate, or flame posts
  • Overly sexual posts
  • Personality question posts (What color underware do you wear?)
  • Threads that do not fit the theme of Vampire Rave
  • Replies to threads that are not on-topic
  • Posts made to the wrong Forum section
  • Silly, nonsensical, or ridiculous posts
  • All Sandbox threads are eventually deleted.

    12. What do RIP and RIA mean?

RIP means Rest in Peace. RIA means Rest in Agony.

A thread that is marked RIP is closed and can no longer be replied to. A thread that is marked RIA is closed, but is also marked for automatic deletion. Threads marked RIA will be deleted in 24-48 hours.

    15. Can I be an Administrator?

    No.

    16. How do I add to the directory?

If you just want to add a link, click on links. Then click on submit link. Suggestions are then reviewed by the Administration for approval. If you want to add something to the Vampire Database, there are suggestion forms throughout the site.

    17. So-and-So was mean to me! I want you to delete their account!

Administrators will not become involved in member disputes. If you find a member offensive, use your block button. All messages from the blocked user will be blocked, along with any comments they may leave on your Profile or Portfolio. Do not ask for a member to be deleted or reprimanded. You will be ignored if you ask.

    18. What does UTC offset mean? (Edit your Profile page)

UTC stands for Universal Time Coordinate. Setting this value to your proper time zone will make all of the times on the site display in your local time. If you don't know your UTC offset it is easy to look up. Please do not ask an Administrator what your UTC offset is. The default setting is -5, which is the time zone for the US east coast.

    19. Why can't I rate Journals?

Journals were made to be unratable by design. You can only comment on Journals.

    20. What are Referral Points?

When you refer members to Vampire Rave you gain Referral Points that increase your Status. This subject is explained more fully here and here.

    21. What is Stamping?

If a member is Premium, he/she can set up a custom stamp. This stamp can be used on any comment field throughout Vampire Rave except the Vampire Database.

    22. For what reasons might a member be suspended?

The reasons for account suspension may include (but are not limited to):
  • Flaming other Vampire Rave members.
  • Creating multiple Vampire Rave accounts.
  • Not following Forum posting guidelines.
  • Violation of Portfolio policies.
  • Violation of the rules of Vamp Box.

    23. Did you use a 'nuke' content management system for the design of this website?

No. I authored the entire site myself in PHP with a MySQL database. There are a few exceptions (The Moon section for example) where I used someone else's code. In these instances credit is given to the original author with a link. I have reviewed many of the 'nuke' packages out there, but never found one I truly liked. They are good for people without programming experience I suppose. For Vampire Rave however, I needed a highly customized website. If you like my work and would like a quote for one of your projects please contact me.
