CITATION: Nuzzolese, E. and M. Borrini. 2010. Forensic Approach to an Archaeological Casework of “Vampire” Skeletal Remains in Venice: Odontological and Anthropological Prospectus. Journal of Forensic Sciences 55(6):1634-1637.
The Journal of Forensic Sciences is one of the premier U.S. outlets for the publication of forensic anthropological studies. In 2010, Nuzzolese and Borrini merged science fiction with science fact when they reported in the JFS on the unusual burial treatment of a ~16th century plague victim. A brick had been placed intentionally into the mouth of a deceased woman, leading the anthropologists and forensic dentists on the case to conclude that a symbolic burial ritual had been performed on the remains of this supposed vampire.
