Alright, assuming everyone knows what a familiar is, what I would like to know is: how many that consider themselves a modern day vampire have a familiar, and in what way does the familiar help you and why do you have one?

I served as a familiar for someone on VR awhile ago. But, I think that the definition of familiar has departed from its traditonal meaning and has taken on the meaning from the one used in the Blade movies. I think many vampires would have some of kind of servants to take care of their affairs during the daytime and protect their lairs in some cases.

This is what I posted in journal on 03 Jan. 2007. It is from a good book on familiars:

-----------

A good book on familiars is:

Familiar Spirits: A Practical Guide for Witches and Magicians, by Donald Tyson.

According to the book, familiars are called for a specific set of tasks. You call the familiar through a system of glyphs which form a sigil that becomes the essence of the familiar and it forms it name.

The example in the book is

"Reveal and Bring the occult texts I require", which is digested to RBOTIR and forms the name "Rabbit Ear". Then you choose different glyphs according to the system in the book to form the sigil. After, you conduct a ritual, then the familiar should appear to you. It could be stray cat or a bird, or a new friend.

There is more to the book. The author lists some real names of familiars from actual witch trials:

Jack
Tom
Ball
Lightfoot
Rorie
Makeshift
Holt (white kitten)
Jamara (a fat spaniel)
Vinegar Tom (gyeyhound that turned into a headless child and ran off before the authorities could capture him as evidence)
Sacke and Sugar (black rabbit)
Newes (polecat)
Three little people kept in different bottles (Big Dick, Little Dick, and Willet)
Suckin - black dog
Lyerd - red lion
Tyffin - black lamb
Pigin - a black toad
Tittey - gray cat
Jack - black cat

i think that animals familiars have more to do with witchcraft than vampirism....unless you are referring to the human kind of familiar.

The Vampire "familiar" is directly derivative of the "familiar" of witchcraft and is found depicted throughout vampire fiction and by Hollywood. However, that being said, the only "familiar" equivalent of actual vampire accounts of Eastern Europe is that of adoring and deeply devoted multiorgasmic female consorts (more than lovers, less than wives... and never victims) who, given their own sexual insatiability, were thrilled with finding a male sexual companion of equal sexual capacity as themselves. They were hated and hunted down, falsely accused as "vampires," by other men for exactly this same reason: because they were so adored by such females.

In some books they say the familiar protects your body when you go into astral journeys.

I do have a "familiar" if you could call the term such. She helps me out on the day to day basis with bills, communications and the like.

Now, if you are refering to animals, I think the cat that I own would be best suited for that role.

Other than that, then it would be a "hollywood" term.
