Feeding Time

03:11 Oct 10 2018
Times Read: 602

Hunger drove him crazy. Not the usual kind of crazy. The kind of crazy that if deep enough, makes one's sanity shift into something completely uncharacteristic, like crushing puppy heads in C clamps. That kind of crazy.

He never stopped to wonder why his personality shifted so violently with hunger pangs.

He moved like lighting through a crowd, ignoring society, ignoring cars screeching to avoid hitting him, bypassing yelling people who wanted him to die on the spot for interrupting the flow of their day.

Thank the heavens no puppies and tool shops were along his path. Or so went the fleeting concern in his head.

Today, something was off. And went beyond his hunger.

However, his belly demanded it be tended to first.

As he barrelled through the morning crowd, a few he bumped along the way had their bag contents spill to the pavement. In several instances, coins flew around him. With devil's speed, his hands managed to collect over ten dollars in coins. Those whose morning he slowed down, were shocked he stayed to help them recover their belongings, attempting to make eye contact with him to thank him.

They were none the wiser.

Breakfast was soon to arrive.

When breakfast was handed to him at his table in the sandwich shop, he bit into his breakfast burrito as if it was his last meal before execution.

It certainly felt like it.

But he ignored feelings regularly.

Feast Interrupted

00:59 Oct 08 2018
Times Read: 617

"Steady, fella," the attendant advised Dirk, who nearly fell into the wall after a few oddly placed steps.

"I'm so hungry. Is the breakfast buffet still open?"

"It closes up in fifteen minutes, sir."

"Sir?" Dirk queried, smearing his hand across his face, clearing remnants of sinus drainage, completely unaware of his outward disrespect.

"It closes in fifteen minutes."

"Mmm, alright. I'll eat fast."

Dirk managed to walk upright long enough to gather a slice of toast, an over ripe banana, and a juicebox.

Several chairs already were turned upside down on the available tables, indicating truth to the attendant's proclamation.

The over-sized TV on the wall softly played out the day's news.

Dirk would shove dry toast into his mouth while trying to comprehend the seven day forecast.

Something moved in his peripheral view. He took in the sight of a black rim hat disappearing just outside the window of the buffet area.

Dirk thought nothing of it, now sucking down the rancid flavour of apple juice.

He noticed the expiration date indicating last week.

Dirk spit it out, ignoring the mess he created on his table.

The weather announcer on the TV jovially added, "Look for a slight chance of showers today, intermittent in the region. Take an umbrella."

Dirk wiped the area with his sleeve, confused about what to do next.

He remembered losing his money in the whisky game last evening.

The grumbling in his stomach grew louder.

"I will feast," Dirk quietly emphasized under his breath.

In the Corner

"Did you hear a scream last evening, Gorge?"

"Me? Hell, no. The whisky game we played last night did me in," Dirk murmured, only to demand back, "keep your fucking voice down!"

Dirk rubbed his head, moaning from a headache he'd never felt before and hoped never to experience again.

"When you're drunk, everything is louder. Right?" Dirk whispered with a sharpness effective enough to slice through steel.

"Damn, bro, just sleep it off."

"No Gorge. Just grab me a coffee and one of those hangover pills in the piss room."

"You really did yourself in didn't you?" Gorge exclaimed with a level of indignation he enjoyed.

"Just get me the pills, you fuck."

"Yeah, I ain't your bitch," Gorge deadpanned, opening the bathroom door enough to slam it against the outside wall.

The hotel room door slammed behind Gorge, erupting an immense pressure inside Dirk's brain, sending his senses reeling and leading to a painful moan. Dirk wrapped up in a blanket, covering his face.

"I want to die. I just want to die, " Dirk mumbled into the bedding before falling asleep.

A shadow in the corner of the room shifted slightly.

Not even the moon

23:13 Oct 07 2018
Times Read: 631

Distance. It means something.

It creates a void of atmosphere.

It divides two points.

It allows spatial dimensions to expand.

Much acted upon the slicing of felt through flesh, through capillaries, through arteries and through one's presence.

His smile, brandished by deep dark shadows, could only be seen if your eyes were about a metre away.

And if you saw his smile, soon, you would die.

And there would be no warning.

No creepy, developing scare of which to react.

No growing emotional unrest would alarm you to nefarious unseen enemies.

You life would simply end.

Any remaining shred of your consciousness would notice the reddened cobblestone fade into black, with your hair tangled in his hands.

Your body would not be within sight.

How it all happened would never be in your mind and allow you to warn others.

You were noticed, noticing what you shouldn't.

And your life was payment.

This is the man in the black rimmed hat's prerogative.

Swift. Deadly. Cold.

And always after a night rain storm.

Not even the moon could tell the tale and warn an unsuspecting soul.
