April Birthdays

April Birthstone: Diamond

It is well known that the Diamond is the hardest substance found in nature, but few people realize that the Diamond is four times harder than the next hardest natural mineral, corundum (sapphire and ruby). Diamonds may be nearly any color in the rainbow plus browns, grays, and white. Shades of yellow are most common, followed by colorless. Blue, black, reddish, and greenish are more valuable (some extremely so).

Folklore, Legend, and Healing Properties

The ancient Hindus called the Diamond "Vajra," meaning lightening, both because of the sparks of light thrown off by this gem as well as its invincible strength. The Diamond is associated with enhancing relationships and increasing inner strength.

The Traditional Metaphysical Properties for the April Birthstone Diamond are balance, clarity and abundance. The healing properties of the April birthstone are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to brain diseases and pituitary glands. The Diamond is also used to draw out toxins and therefore was used as a remedy for poison.

March Birthdays

March Birthstone: Aquamarine

A member of the beryl family, the aquamarine name means "sea water", which is an apt description of the colors of many aquamarine seen on the market.

It has long been considered the symbol of happiness and everlasting youth.

Folklore, Legend, and Healing Properties

Since early times, aquamarine has been believed to endow the wearer with foresight, courage, and happiness. It is said to increase intelligence and make one youthful.

As a healing stone, it is said to be effective as a treatment for anxiety and in the Middle Ages it was thought that aquamarine would reduce the effect of poisons.

A legend says that sailors wore aquamarine gemstones to keep them safe and prevent seasickness. Water in which an aquamarine has been soaked was believed to cure eye troubles and hiccups.

Aquamarine alternates with bloodstone as the birthstone for March.
