~To Linger~

No one knew her purpose. No one knew her name. No one knew anything about her.

Caged in by darkness, she kept walking, not realizing where she was going, only knowing something inside her was urging her on. Something that was yet still alive. Why did she feel so cold? Why did she feel so empty, like her very heart and soul was caged and bleeding? Why did she feel so alone?

A raindrop fell from the sky and landed with a pat on her cheek, making her look up. The raindrop slid down her cheek, making it look like she was crying. But no. A hallow cant cry. They are nothing. To some they are even the living dead.

Finally she collapsed on her knees, hunger gnawing at her insides.

"Who am I?" she asked herself "What am I?"

She looked at her palms as if they held some secret that she didn't. Yet they, like herself, were nothing. The rain still poured down on her like angel's tears.

"I don’t understand! I'm so confused!" She cried out into the empty dark night. Her voice echoed along the tree, frightening all who dared even listen. She picked herself up and continued on her way.

Her shadow led her down the dirt road. Soon her hunger subsided into nothing.

"I wish- I want to just-" She stopped in mid-sentence. What did she want? She could not wish for death that she loathed so much for, fore she was it herself. She was looking at her hands again. A flicker of light startled her, and she looked up almost afraid of what she would find.

Then something echoed in her head, a voice so sure, yet commanding.

"You are not dead yet child! Run, Run! Run before the darkness that longs to take you, captures your nearly blackened heart. Run to me! Run to the light, run to your last flicker of hope, child. I can save you."

Surprisingly, she listened to this voice. She ran towards this last light, her last flicker of hope. Then something behind her rustled the tree leaves and she heard the eerie moan of the wind telling her to run. Telling her the darkness was coming for her.

Frightened, she ran faster.

Her bare feet padded softly against the dirt road. And then, she fell.

Colliding with the road, she ended up sprawled only a couple of inches from this light, this hope. Breath-less.

For the first time, warm real tears flowed one by one out of her brown eyes. She felt pain and attempted to get up. It was to much. She crumbled back down.

Fear worked its way into her mind, tearing at whatever sanity she had left, as a cold, dead, firm hand grasped her foot. She clawed at the dirt in a state of panic, as the darkness dragged her away from her very existence.

"No! You can't take me!" She yelled desperately, fresh tears sprouting in the corner of her eyes, ready to spill. She reached out to the light, nearly touching it and then she let out a long piercing scream that shattered the light as it pulled her away.

And then she was gone.

The End
