Harkon Draconis: Prologue

18:22 Nov 13 2007
Times Read: 561

What you’ve been told in books, a lie. Movies, do they ever get it right? If you think we’re cloaked aristocrats that have a fancy for a maid’s blood every night, think again. You’ve seen us, maybe even realized there was something wrong about us, but at the most you’d think we were wannabe Goths. How wrong can you get? Vampires are there, we’ve hunted the shadows, the dark corners of the world since you and we first crept out of our caves. What’s more, you only think of us as a myth, or a little fantasy to fill up your time. We’re here, we’re real, deal with it.

What you are we once were, what we are you can be. I was once as you. Mortal, fleeting, never knowing what joys the night could bring. Nor did I know what pain it could hold. The only thing I knew was that there was something more than human lurking in the shadows outside our time, something that was incalculably evil, yet noble. Vampires are not the evil creatures of legend, the only time you ever hear of us is when something goes wrong. Then something as old as our kind springs into place.

We’re just as vulnerable as you, more so in some ways, we cannot stand sunlight until we are old and none have ever got that far. We must feed, some more than others, the youngest most of all, but we do also eat as humans do, we are not completely dead as some would have you think. In fact some would say we are far more alive then most humans, we feel things more keenly than you, see more, hear the sounds you can only dream of. But we too feel pain more keenly, so our gift is also our curse.

But enough of what we are and what we aren’t, this is not a story about vampires and their ways this is a story about myself and my family, how we’ve fared through the ages and what it means to be one of us. But there are things to talk of before we get to firmly ensconced in the night, this is not a tale for the faint hearted, nor is it one that is assured a happy ending. As I am writing it more may happen, one day I may not be here to write it so mortal, enjoy the tale while it lasts, I’ve lived, loved and lost, now hear my words and remember.
