I rear ended my room mate's truck last night. (More of a nudge really but I bent his metal bumper with my plastic car...) *LAUGHS*

A beautiful moment

A cool thing happened last night. When cleaning and hauling sewing sewing stuff upstairs off the fish tank I uncovered my flute BUT I didn't see it because I'm not that tall. One of the kids who used to live behind us Has been in band the last couple years and plays flute. (unusual for a boy) He asked if he could look at it and told me he was in band and that's what he played but he always borrowed a school flute etc etc etc and really missed playing over the summer. One thing lead to another and I asked him to play something. As flutes go this one is kinda crappy and has evidence of repairs and needs new pads etc. He held the case with such reverence as if holding something priceless. He had troubles sliding the mouth/head piece on while putting it together. There's a little finessing in order to get it on so I showed him that and he played for me. With no warm up or anything he popped in to an Irish song I actually know and he played it "like a Catholic" (An Irish musician joke way to highly compliment skills) Like any teen boy he was self conscious and awkward about playing in front of other kids and people but he could not hide his obvious passion for music. He's only been playing 2 years! I'd have guessed at least 5. I asked him if he planned to keep taking band and he looked at me funny and said "yeah" like I asked him if he planned to keep breathing for the rest of the day. We talked band and flutes and mechanical stuff about flutes lol as he was taking it apart and putting it back in the case. He stood to put it back on the fish tank and I asked him what he was doing with his flute. *smiles* (I said seriously though and he missed what I had said. He told me he was putting it back where he found it. I picked it up and sort of shoved it at him so he'd move to "catch" it. I told him "You really should take your flute home with you and not leave it laying around at other peoples' houses." He stared at me with wide eyes in disbelief, awe, and fear. He was afraid to ask if I was "for real" about giving it to him. So I said "If you promise to play it and love it... It is yours so take it. I have seen a gift in you and you need the tool" He was speechless and dumbstruck nearly in tears. All he could say was "Seriously? *he went down to sitting on his knees and hugged it to him* Mine?" I nodded and smiled and told him yes. He sat for quite a while staring near tears and tried to find his voice Mouthing then whispering then saying thanks softly. I imagine he is still in shock LoL It was a beautiful thing I wish you could have been there for it. A long string of beautiful moments.

The flute I got on Ebay a 7 or 8 years ago in Denver? *shrugs* It was listed as "broken" and I was the only bidder. All that was wrong with it was that a spring wire had slipped off a post and some of the membranes on a few of the pads were split. With shipping and handling I got the flute and a hard case for less than I could have gotten a soft case in a shop. I played it now and then but I don't think enough to justify keeping it yesterday. I think some things come to your hands for a time on their way to where they belong. I will miss it but I think one day another flute, one meant for me will find my hands. *smiles*
