Ok so this is more of a rant.



I'm getting ready for a belly dance competition and I'm thinking about last year's. How it was all a polictial game. Now I'm not saying I was the best and should have won. blah blah blah. No the girl that won was the best. It was more of the politics that bother me. How the first question out of anyone's mouth was, " So what's your dance style?" Does it really matter? When I would answer I was honest and said that I don't follow any one particular style. You would think I had just said I have the pluage with how fast they didn't want to be near me. Or worse yet try to "cure me" and change me to their style.



Belly dancing is an art. No matter your style. What ever happened to the times when a dancer wasn't judged by what she does?



When I got my cards read the last time the reader suggested maybe coming up with a new name for my style. Instead of saying no style at all. She's right. So I've been thinking what would be a good name for it. Which led me to the thought of what why I picked the name Jamillah for my troupe. It means beautiful, graceful. Something that embodies the dance as a whole.



So that is the name for my dance style. My style is Jamillah. I still wont play the polictial games and my one student knows this. She doesn't want to play them either. I also know this may mean we wont win. But you know what. Winning isn't the reason to compete to us. The joy of performing for others is. The fact there's a competition going on is just a detail.
