Epilogue

‘The world makes me wonder about the longings of its being…

I long to see the smile on my sister’s face, but she is gone and so is the rest of my family. I want to die the way mortals do and imagine being with my wife but she is gone, dying from scarlet fever, my child perishing along with her. Everything is gone, lost because of this cursed immortality.

Now I seem to understand this way of life and don’t care anymore, the hunger of my past was driven away long ago. The only thing I long to do is to get revenge for my family and kill the vampire who stole my first love away. This whole time I waited for the day when I would meet him again, when I do…I’ll fight him to the death. Nothing will stop me, even ask my creator, my father, and my sire, he even gave up on my hundred fifty years ago, and he was only one who loved me, as me. May the unknown bless his wicked soulless corpse! I’m a bloodthirsty creature of the night…

No more playing games, I’m coming for you Eule and this time I’ll kill you.

Welcome to Roseton

Chapter One

“Hush child, it’s all right.” A man whispered as he came up to the young girl, tracing along her jaw line with his finger. Her eyes blazing with fear, she shook her red head. The man smiled sourly and kept a distance between them, his body shifted awkwardly in an animalistic motion. The girl coward away as the man came towards her and leaned against the solid concrete wall, slowly her hands slid down the wall with her as she sat on the ground crying to herself. She kept crying even when the man kneeled patiently before her and brushed away the hair from her face and lifted her chin, looking into her hazel eyes.

She looked into his eyes in reaction of his stare, the tears stopped, but she still shivered. “Please stop, please.” Her head shook, unable to cry or scream. Inside she felt as if she would explode. He didn’t express anything; no remorse or anger, just caressed her cheek and kissed her. “Shh. I’m not going to hurt you, just relax for me. I have something I want to give you,” He said, looking at her neck. She seemed panicked as he touched her neck with his delicate mouth and kissed it.

“No, no, no, no. Please don’t. I don’t want to die,” said the girl, feeling stiff and unable to move. “I don’t want to die.”

He smiled, as he looked her in the eye again, blinking, seeming like a friend.

“Do you still hurt?”

The girl simply shook her head; in return he gave her another kiss and slowly undid her shirt. She didn’t protest as he start to kiss her breasts gently, his hands cradling her. The only things that escaped her lips, were a few small whimpers. He slowly kissed her neck again and licked at it a few times, his sharpened teeth tracing along the vein. His pitch black eyes glowing with extreme hunger, then he bit into her soft tissue, ripping her vein and drinking the pure, metallic liquid as the girl gave a dying scream.

There was a light splash and Brianne looked around, her eyes wide with fright as she lay back in her tub, bubbles collecting in her brown hair. Her clear eyes looked at something, but no vision came to her. There was a knock on the bathroom door and a voice called to her sounding concerned. She sat up again, sighing and looked at the door.

“Everything is fine mother, I just got surprised.” She called from the tub and as a response she heard footsteps move away and disappearing down the narrow hall.

This time she didn’t lay back down instead pulled the plug and the water started to drain slowly. As the water started to go down, she just watched it, watching it turn into a mini hurricane. The water kept swirling and going around, listening to the gurgling sounds it made, she sighed as she picked up her towel and wrapped it around her body. She couldn’t see anything except for the blackness of the world, which never affected her.

Since the age ten Brianne was blind and could never see anything. Her life was good, feeling her way around and sensing. Her hearing was better and so was her sense of smell. There was one thing that she had that no human or blind person had, she could sense someone even if they make no noise, and some called it the vampiric sense. Early in her life, she had been in a car accident with her father, which had caused her blindness.

She looked at herself in the mirror, but of course she saw nothing it was just something she did out of habit like any teenage girl. With the towel, she fuzzed up her hair by rubbing her head. Then she grabbed a comb and slowly brushed it out, wincing, as she pulled on the knots, never the one to do it gently. The time taking to finish with her hair the rest of her body was dry. She fixed her towel before opening the bathroom door and being greeted by her sight dog Diego, who she petted, then walked past.

In her room she dropped the towel, started moving around, pulling out a drawer with shirts. She laid out a shirt with her fresh black skirt, putting it on. She pulled the turtleneck on over her head and then slid on the black skirt. Then felt around for her laced up boots, which she found at her bedside, pulling them on and tied them. Just in case she smoothed out her skirt then straightened out her red turtleneck, smiling that haunting silent smile. Diego came bounding in and sat by her side, looking up at her.

Her brother stood by the doorway, he was twenty-two. She smiled at him as well, giving him the well-known warm smile. He walked into her room and looked at everything, lifting up her towel and laying it on the bed. He took a seat on a solid wood chair, which felt a little bumpy on his ass as he finally settled down.

“Good golly Bri, you look nice today,” said her brother. “Already for the long evening at the party?”

He grinned. As if seeing it, she shook her head.

“ You know as well as I do, I don’t party.”

“I know, but this is the party of the century, I mean tomorrow is Halloween and tonight is the traditional Ghouls fools party at Jacobs house. I remember it so well; Marline Jacob hosted the party, anyway your old enough. I think you should go, I’m sure your friends will be there.” He rubbed the back of his head; not sure if anything he said would convince her.

‘God Damn him. Of course they’ll be there, everyone will!’

Brianne looked in his direction. “No, I don’t want to.”

This was not the best time for her to talk; she would be late in meeting her friends at the park today and probably would regret it later. Knowing her best friend Caprice, she would be upset if she was late…again. No, this was not the time to argue with her brother about tonight’s party. Anyway why would she want to go? All they did at that party was go in costumes, get drunk, dance, make out and watch the classic horror movies. It went all through the night; everyone in her school was going even her friend. She walked past him, slowly striding and stopped at her doorway, a hand helping support her against the ridge of the door.

“Listen, Roland I’ll think about it. Right now I have to meet my friends, you remember them Caprice and Nick. I was wondering if you could take me to Monty Park.”

There was a strained silence and she heard the chair creak a bit from her brother’s weight. He was a muscular guy, with rusty brown hair. His skin tones a lot darker and thicker. Sometimes if she focused hard enough, she saw a shadow or what she called an impression of the person or thing in front of her.

“Sure.”

He seemed tense; she could tell by the sound of his voice. So this was going to be a silent drive then, she figured it. He wanted her to go badly so she would be out with other people and not feel like an outcast. It was out of the goodness of his heart, but she wanted nothing to do with this. She gave a grateful smile when he agreed to take her.

“Lets go.” She looked around and whistled the dog came running to her. She took hold of the strap, which was on his harness to help guide her.

He nodded; walking out of her room and collecting up his jacket which jingled with his car keys. Then handing her the sunglasses, quickly putting them on, her dog guided her out of the house. A gust of wind brushed past her loose hair, scraping her face, causing a small shiver. It was already autumn, but it felt like a hard winter. It never snowed in Roseton since it’s close to LA. She always hated this weather, when it was mixed heat and cool winds. Sure it would be shining all day, but the next moment there would be a gust of cold wind blowing in your face. It felt nice to be outside though, her boots squishing the fresh dewed grass. Her dog guiding her giving a reassuring “woof” as if to say it’s a fine right morning and everything would turn out great. That’s what Brianne hoped for, she had a feeling her brother would start talking to her later and try again to convince her.

Let him try. She thought with a thin smile on her face.

The car started up and she had to open the back door, letting her dog in. She felt her way to the front and felt the handle, pulling on it until it gave a click and opened for her. Just as easily she got in and shut it.

The drive to the park was a sour feeling; her brother started to talk about his ex-girlfriend and how she was dating some magazine model. He commented on the way she had sneered at him and sexually kissed her new boyfriend. Then he went on ranting about how his new girl always twirled her hair when she was distracted. All this lightened the mood; Brianne laughed softly, keeping the smile on her face, glad to know that there was no silence after all.

Then everything went silent and she got a few minutes to sink into her own mind. ‘I’m glad to be here with my brother; he and I haven’t talked like this for almost so long. But I’m bothered, that dream…it was scary.’ She had to push the memory away or else it would be nipping her in the shin all day long and Caprice hated it when she was hiding something. So to forget she took a deepened breath and held it to the count of five, then released.

That should be enough. For now.

‘Vampires.’

She laughed, just the thought of them.

There was a hand on her shoulder as she got caught up in her thoughts and moved a hand to feel it was her brother. It felt strong, yet gentle. She could just imagine his concerned expression as she sat back.

“Are you…”

She stopped him. “I’m fine, just lost in my thoughts, you know me always wondering into a world beyond this point.”

“I just wanted to let you know there is some traffic.”

She sighed.

“So, we’ll be late?”

“Yeah most likely, but Caprice will live. It’s just the weekend traffic taking over since it’s a Friday.”

She nodded. Took a breath of city air and let it out feeling like she wanted to just choke. She cursed the factory in the city, and the people, which worked in them. It would be their own fault if the atmosphere were completely destroyed.

Her hand clenched her purse her mother had made her two summers ago, smiling as she let her fingers trace along every thread, feeling itchy. The memory filled her with a sweet feeling in her head, relaxing her defensives and her hand continued to stroke the itchy yarn, which was brought tightly together into checkered pattern of orange and black, which was her favorite colors for her favorite holiday. Her feet vibrated from the tips to her ankles from the way her brother’s old trunk moved. That caused an uneasy in sensation her body, tensing. Brianne turned her focus back on the purse, now feeling the strap trying to imagine how it looked. Her mother used to knit all the time, making blankets and purses, even scarves for her friends. After all her mother used to be a professional designer, but after giving birth to her brother she retired and became a stay at home mom. Now all Brianne could wander was what her mother would with her free time.

At that moment she could have sworn she had seen an image of her brother focusing hard and muttering to himself about cupcakes. She bit her lower lip in frustration, trying to keep control of her mind. However she was right, her brother was muttering about cupcakes, she heard him going, “Cupcakes…Cupcakes. Twenty of them, max she said.” She figured it was for Rachael, his girlfriend’s little sister. She moved her hand from the strap of her purse and onto the armrest, bending so her head rested on her palm.

Her thoughts went back into the past, now to when she had caught her brother doing weed with his second “lover”, as he liked to call them. She was pretty young and that was when she could see, so it felt a little strange to think that far back. He had frowned at her and told her not ever tell mother, and guess what she did…She told like any good little sibling would do. And man he got in trouble and so did his girlfriend, they were forced to break up. She regretted ever telling, but a week after her brother thanked her because he found out because of weed his ex was diagnosed with aids. So she felt better after that.

In truth she hated thinking too much. She grunted a bit, her palm losing feeling, but she didn’t care.

Then she went on thinking about the supernatural like ghosts and vampires, trying to connect the dots of why people obsessed about them, trying to prove they were real. That’s what her dream seemed to be about, a vampire. She wanted to slap herself for even bringing that up, vampires?‘ Pssh posh’ That’s all it was ‘pssh posh” she knew that there was the subculture. She had to push this thought away or else it would really bug her until she went insane.

Her palm curled up supporting her head trying to keep herself from drowsing off. She was in a totally different world. Just like her brother.

The car turned off the freeway and went onto one of those twirled ramps to get out of the traffic. She felt every turn; her body sliding from right to left, right to left, then left again. It was almost as if she was on a rollercoaster, except it didn’t cause her to get a sick feeling in the pit of her gut. Her head rose and her arm finally rested down on the cushion, the fuzzy feeling slowly dissipating from her hand, since it fell a sleep. Her head shifted to a more suitable position as one leg laid on another and she breathed again. She started to count, to calm this silence and maybe break loose from the spell that had bonded her and brother’s mouths.

‘One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six.” She muttered just like her mother taught her. To get rid of all the tension inside her and relax.

The car stopped, she figured it was a stop light right now. She thought of red light and green light game she used to play.

“Bri.” Her brother finally spoke up and she felt grateful.

Her eyes glanced around in a pitiful attempt to look at everything as she listened to the wind blowing against the window. “Sorry.” She said in a reproachful voice.

“When ever you count like that it creeps me out and makes me worry about you. By the way we’re almost there. I wish you got over your fear already.”

She heard him give a worried sigh, his hand lightly slapping the steering wheel, his nerves building. She automatically felt bad, but she couldn’t help, it was the just the way it was.

“Roland…” said Brianne, hesitates.

He must have been irritated by now. “Yes?”

“I…I.” She tasted a sour liquid in her mouth, just the taste of saliva. She couldn’t form the words right, she was only there half of the time.

“I’ll go to the Ghouls Fools party at Brooke Ridge Ave. at the Jacobs.” She smiled.

There was a rewarding light pat on the shoulder from Roland, which lightened her and made everything feel okay. Nothing could destroy this moment, when she actually made her brother happy and not nervous around her.

“I’ll take you then. It wills a lot of fun, trust me sissy.” He said in a reassuring tone of voice.

She giggled when he said ‘Wills’, it always made her happy when he said that, it sounded so childish, since her brother was still a child inside it worked perfect. Her hands collected up her purse, which lay by her legs. She hugged it close to her like a teddy bear. The car ride wasn’t as bad now, now they both spoke and she was distracted from concentrating fully on the movements and lights of the car.

‘I wonder if this is the best idea that I agreed to go. I don’t want to really, but I want to make him happy, so I’ll go for him. And anyway with my friends there I might have some fun.” She thought, sitting back again as the car turned another corner.

“How much longer?” She wined in a baby voice just to tease him.

“Maybe five to ten minutes.”

She hunched her shoulders and sighed, giving it extra length to give it more of a dramatic phase.

“Quit all that dramatic stuff Bri, it gets irritating and I’m not in the mood to just handle this.”

“Gees, okay.”

She rolled her eyes and pushed her sunglasses back up to the bridge of her nose.

“Such a stiff little man.”

She heard growling she almost laughed, only sputtered it with her lips tightly closed.

“What the fuck was that Roland?” She asked, blinking behind her blinds. “Are you on crack or something?”

His mouth fowled into a deep frown. “Watch your language Brianna.” She looked at him offended and shrugged lazily, to idle to argue back. She hated being called “Brianna or Amber.” For some reason it drove her absolutely nuts. However she stuck out her tongue and swore in her mind instead.

‘Annoying little man.’

He couldn’t read thoughts now could he? She felt better and wanted her question answered.

“Why’d you growl at me?” Asking again, this time expecting an answer.

Silence…

He snorted bitterly. “You are my little sister and should treat me as an adult.” He sounded like a boy saying that stuff.

“Bull!” she shouted. “You are a little boy.”

They both laughed, shaking with heavy laughter, her brother knew she was right. He was a little boy inside, he still lived with their parents going to community for the third year. Then again he said he was growing up enough to look to a University. Slowly the laughter died down as the park came to a close view.

“I’m going leave for Utah soon.”

That killed it. “Oh…”

“I would have mentioned it earlier. My girlfriend is going there to work in a job she got and she said that the university there is great.”

She only nodded, fumbling with the buckle of her seat and sighed. She wouldn’t look at her brother, even though she couldn’t see him. It felt as if she looked at him, she would paint the image of his dire expression and she didn’t want this crap right now. Whenever she was with her brother, it felt as if she needed to put some type of defense to protect her from his judgements and worries, then there were the uneasy feelings she felt from him. It was always ups and downs with him and it always ruined the time they had, including her internal thoughts that drove her all over. Right then and there she felt ready to jump out, but now she was like a doll placed on stage for an unknown audience to watch and laugh at. Considering she wasn’t, but it always made her feel so empty when someone told her at the last minute, finding things out so late she had no time to react.

So it was in a few days, she would have time to plan a gift or something simple. Right? …Right? She could only hope.

“When exactly?”

Roland must have looked bitter, but right then she couldn’t tell, his body was not showing any vibrations of nerves.

So let the ball roll all on its own then?

He spoke, but it was quiet. “Three days after Halloween.”

The only thing she could do was be cooperative, she knew he hated telling her bad news.

“Oh.” Was how she simply put it? Now she wished the shadows brought forth from the darkness would engulf her whole. ‘Suck me dry, please suck me dry…’ She thought.

The car came to a halting stop and she looked around as she sighed, relieved for once she was going to be away from him. She loved her brother more than anyone else in the family, but at the same time she didn’t think that she could trust him. Strange how those could sound so wrong if someone spoke them aloud to your face and the truth splattered all over the table, written in slime of madness.

“We’re here.” He said, a small smiled appeared.

“It was swell being able to talk to you Roland.”

He shrugged and gave her a light hug and she returned the favor. “Bye sis.”

She nodded. “Later. Caprice will drive me home.”

Her brother said okay and she got out, felt the cold steel of the car and felt her way to the back, grasping for the handle. She pulled it and it clicked opened for her. Diego barked and she hushed him, as she grabbed the strap and he jumped out. The noise that she heard was of the car moving away and leaving nothing but the sound of leaves scrambling around on the ground.
