The day was all but done
under the sunset in Vermont
the cows grazed
and the mountains slept in the back ground
the day was all but done
the young children in the fields
doing a man's work
the day was all but done
chickens in their coop
mother sitting on the stoop
waiting for her sons to return
from a long day's work
For the sun lies to all
the day was not done
laughter is heard in the distance as her sons come running home
their smiles turn to frowns
as they see their mother
sadly looking down
the skies turn gray
with not a ray of sun
they listen for the story
their mother is to tell
they sit around closely
without a movement or a yell
there has been an accident
they soon come to find out
a death has a occurred
and so forth comes a shout
the children's father
the mother's husband
was not going to return home
on this once cheerful summer's day
a rumble in the distance
followed by some raindrops
they hobble inside
with no father to provide
with no husband by her side
that day was done.
