Two officers stepped out of the patrol car and walked up to Pete. “You the owner of this cabin?” One asked. He appeared to be a bit older than the other, so probably had more experience. Pete nodded. “Pete Steele. I called because someone broke into my home.” He showed his driver’s license with his address on it. So the officers knew he was in fact the owner, and not the burglar pretending. The older officer took it, and looked it over, then nodded at the younger officer. The younger officer then went into the cabin to search for any signs of an intruder.

“You say you have a roommate, what are the chances he let someone in without your knowledge?” He asked Pete. “Highly unlikely. He is not the type to let strangers inside. Not to mention the lock was broken.” Pete explained. The officer walked up to the door with Pete and examined the lock. “Looks like someone used a sharp tool. Possibly a knife. So, probably not a professional. Or else they would have merely picked it. Not broken it.” The officer began writing down something on his notepad. Pete glanced up at the staircase. Wondering if the other officer found anything yet. “Any enemies you may have?” The officer asked Pete. Pete shook his head. “No. No enemies.” He said. “Any valuables, or, illegal items they may have been looking for?” The officer looked Pete in the eye. “Nothing illegal. As for valuables. Just the electronics, like my TV, Jase’s laptop he uses for school, and a Xbox. Did not check to see if those are still there. But the TV is.” Pete responded.

The officer wrote this down, when the other officer came back. He whispered something in the older officer’s ear, causing the man to look at him with concern. He then radioed into the police station. “This is Officer Rolph. I am requesting a 10-33 at the Steele cabin. There has been a 10-62 B and E. Blood found in one of the bedrooms, and one of the homeowners is nowhere to be seen yet.” He said, causing Pete’s blood to run cold. Pete was about to run upstairs, when the younger officer stopped him. “Sorry sir. Cannot risk you contaminating the crime scene.” He said, holding Pete back. “How much blood, is he okay, what happened?” Pete began asking, panic building up in him. The officer tried his best to calm him, as the backup arrived. Pete then ran to the kitchen checking his phone, and texted Jase. No response. He tried calling him, and again, no response.

The other policemen went upstairs, and began searching the entire house. Several men went up to Jase’s room where the blood was found, and began taking pictures and checking for any other evidence of a struggle, or possible murder. “This Jase. What is he like?” Officer Rolph asked. “A good friend of mine. More like a brother. Have known him since we were kids, when his family died, mine took him in.” Pete began explaining. “He has no enemies. No one who would wish him harm. He has not a single bad bone in his body, so there is no reason for anyone to hurt him.” He added. Officer Rolph noted this down. “Any girlfriends, or, boyfriends?” He asked. Pete looked up. “No. None. He has been too busy studying for school. He is going to college next year.” He stated.

“I see, so unlikely to be a jealous lover.” Officer Rolph noted down. “Do you have any partners who may, be jealous or angry?” He asked. Peter shook his head. “My last partner, died around two years ago.” Officer Rolph paused, then a look of realization. “Ah, now I know where I heard your name. The Linnace case.” He sighed, writing this down as well. Pete looked at him, wondering why that was important. “Please, just tell me. What did you find exactly, in his room?” Pete finally asked. Officer Rolph sighed. “Some blood splatters, a decent amount too. Like someone had either been stabbed or shot.” He explained.

“Do you have any friends or family you can stay with? Until the scene has been fully looked over. It is an active crime scene, and you cannot stay here.” He then explained. Pete looked down. “I have some friends. The Morres family.” He sighed. “Can I at least grab some stuff from my room?" He asked. Officer Rolph nodded, but went with him to ensure he was not grabbing anything that may be of importance to the case. Pete grabbed a few clothes, and a small lock box. But Rolph stopped him. “Wait, what is in the box?” He asked.

Pete opened it and showed it was just some money, and an old key. “The money is since I don’t want to leave it here. The key, is just an old. Souvenir.” He explained. The truth was, the key was a gift Jessica gave him a month before she vanished. She told him to keep it safe, and that it was very dear to her. And he had kept it since then. Hoping to one day find some chest, vault, or even diary the key would fit. That would tell the truth to what happened to her. It was the one item, he never told the police about when asked about her disappearance. He knew it was foolish, and he should have told them. But now, he was in too deep. Two years passed. If he told them now, they may accuse him of something. The officer sighed, looking the key over. It looked more like an art piece, or piece of jewelry than an actual key. It was black with a red stone, and the teeth, were silver. He shrugged figuring it was once part of a necklace, and handed it back to Pete. Pete finished packing, and left for the Morres house.

Once home, Pete went inside to put the groceries away. Though there was no sign of Jase, the TV was on in the living room. The show it was playing was some old black and white movie. The volume was on low, which was a good thing since the current scene playing was of a young woman screaming in terror. Pete ignored this at first, and made his way to the kitchen.

As he put the food away, he began to wonder since when did Jase watch old movies like that? Jase was more into modern horror than the classics. The closest thing to an old classic he would watch was John Carpenter’s The Thing. He then heard the TV turn off, and assumed Jase was in the living room. “Jase, I could not find any maple bacon this time. So got apple wood. Is that okay?” He called out, but no response. Pete finished putting the food away, then went to the living room. There was no sign of Jase.

He looked around, wondering where Jase was. That was when he saw it. The door was open again. And he knew for a fact it was not his doing. He shut the door as he entered. “Jase, I have told you before to close the door.” He muttered, walking up, and looking out. Expecting to see Jase walking off for another walk. Instead, he saw nothing. But there were footprints on the dirt path leading to his house. They were far too small to be Jase’s. Not a child, but. A woman. There was even a slight hint of heel, suggesting a woman wearing heels.

Pete stared at the footprints. Noting there were two sets. One coming, and one going. That’s when realization struck. Someone had been in his house without permission. Someone, had broken in. Quickly he ran back inside, about to lock the door. But saw, the lock was broken. “Oh no.” He whispered. He then ran back to the kitchen and grabbed the landline on the wall, since his cellphone was on the counter charging. Quickly he dialed 911. Looking around he didn’t see any signs of an intruder. And if the footprints were right. Whoever it was already left. But, what if they stole something, or came back?

“911, where is your emergency?” A female operator asked. “Hello, my name is Pete Steele. I live in the cabin just outside of the town of Red Woods. Address is 3472 Oak Avenue. I think someone has broken into my house. The lock is broken, and the TV was left on. I did not do it, nor did my roommate. Who, is not even home right now.” Pete began, and a sinking feeling hit him. ‘What if Jase was home, but hurt? Or worse?’ “Please calm down. Is the intruder still in your house?” The operator asked. “I do not think so. And to be honest, am unsure if my roommate is home or not. I haven’t gone upstairs yet. But when I called out to him he did not answer.” Pete explained.

“I am sending an officer to your location. Stay put. Do not search the house. If there is someone still inside they may be armed. It is best you go outside and wait for the police.” The operator told him. “Okay, I will wait outside by the pickup truck. So they know it is me.” He said, before hanging up and going outside to wait. Close to a half hour later, the police arrived.

(Trigger warning for self harm/ suicide mentioned)

After work Pete drove to the local convenience store. It was now eight thirty in the morning, and the store was empty as usual. He looked at the list of groceries they needed, and walked around the store putting a few items in his basket. The store was brightly lit in an almost blinding light, though it kept flickering now and then.

As he looked at the options of beef products on display he noticed a shadow moving out of the corner of his eye. It was long and thin, and almost looked like that of a snake and not a person. Turning his attention towards the movement he saw a man standing a few feet away looking at the nearby beer cooler. It took Pete a few moments to realize he actually knew this man.

“Mr. Linnace?” He asked softly, as if doubting himself. The man looked at him. Though he looked more like an old man than last time Pete saw him, it was Alex Linnace. He seemed to have aged twenty years, in just under two years. His face was no longer clean shaven but sporting a gruff beard. His once bright green eyes looked tired and dull. His medium tan skin was covered in frown lines, and aging lines. He wore a faded blue jacket, matching jeans, and dirty old work boots.

Alex stared at him silently for a few moments. “Oh, Pete. Been a while huh?” He said looking like he was already uncomfortable with the conversation. “Yeah, haven’t seen you since the service. How have you been?” Pete asked, unsure if he should even try talking with Alex. A little over two years ago Alex’s daughter had vanished without a trace, a week before her eighteenth birthday. The only clue as to what happened was a suicide note found a few days later in her hand writing.

Father Brynt had kindly held a form of funeral service for her once the police called off the search. That was the last time Pete ever saw Alex Linnace. He had actually assumed the poor man left town. So it was a surprise to see him there. Alex didn’t answer the question, instead merely shrugged and turned to walk away. But then he stopped and looked at Pete.

“You, and that friend of yours. You two often hung with her and those other two friends of hers. Please tell me, do you know anything?” He asked with pleading eyes. “I don’t know anything. I wish I did. But I don’t. She stopped talking with me a month prior.” Pete explained. When the disappearance first happened Pete was one of the first people the police questioned since he had often been seen hanging with her. They even dated once for a few weeks. But it didn’t last long.

Despite his close relationship with her, even he had never noticed anything was wrong. And never realized she was suicidal till it was too late. Alex looked down, sighing. Losing his daughter was hard, but what made it worse was not knowing what truly happened to her. “I see. Well, take care. “ He said softly, turning to leave Pete alone.

After Pete finished his shopping he went home. He felt terrible for Alex, and wished he could help the poor man. But there was nothing he could do. Jessica’s disappearance was unexpected, and out of character for her. She was an outgoing individual, who loved to party. The idea that she had such personal demons seemed almost impossible to most people who knew her.

Jase was taller than Pete, very lean and didn’t appear to have much muscles. He had shoulder length jet black hair, the bangs covering his right eye. His eyes a deep grey, with a piercing stare that seemed to see into one’s soul. His skin was pale and face was tired, suggesting he hasn’t slept in a long time. He wore a clean black t-shirt, matching jeans and black sneakers.

His looks seemed to contradict themselves in a way. The all black clothes and long hair made him look like some teen punk. But his facial features and build made him actually look older than Pete. When in reality he was younger by two years.

“Good morning.” Pete joked softly with a smirk. Jase sighed quietly , and rolled his eyes. “You too. I also made some bacon if you're hungry.” Jase responded in his usual soft spoken voice. Out of the two of them, Pete was more open and free spirited. He spoke his mind when he wanted to, and didn’t seem to care if anyone listened. While Jase was more of a loner, and quiet. Unless he trusted you he would keep his opinions to himself, and acted respectful to everyone he met.

Pete sat down to drink his coffee and eat some bacon. “So any plans today?” He asked Jase. “Father Brynt offered to pay me a hundred dollars if I help him with cleaning out the church’s attic. He wants to have the Christmas Decorations ready by next month. And he cannot reach them with all the junk up there.” Jase said finishing his cup of cold, but not iced black coffee.

“Oh, that’s good. You can use the money for extra expenses for college next year.” Pete said finishing his small meal. “Maybe. I just hope this isn’t like the last time he hired me to do some work. He spent that whole day subtly dropping hints that I need to attend church more often. And how the devil often targets the youth of the world.” He added with a slight smile.

Father Brynt was a good man and meant well. But he often seemed to worry for Jase. More so than anyone who actually attended his church. Perhaps Jase’s clothes and hair concerned the old fashioned man. Or the fact that Jase almost never came to church, and when he did he would rarely pay any attention.

Pete sighed. “He means well. And at least he isn’t too pushy about religion.” He shrugged. Jase nodded and finished his coffee then went to put on a black denim jacket. “I need some fresh air. Just a short walk around the jogging trail in the woods. Oh, and when you are finished with work, we are running low on groceries. I put a list on the fridge of what we need.” Jase said walking out the door.

Pete groaned softly. “Seriously? Could have done the shopping yourself after your walk.” He looked at the list on the fridge and pocketed it. Once Pete was ready he put on a grey mechanics jacket and went to work using an old red Ford pickup truck. The truck’s bed was filled with toolboxes and various tools for car repairs.

Red Woods.

(Part of a novel I am writing. Takes Place in the same world As the Ancient hunt.)

It was late at night, the moon and stars hung high, lighting up the sky. On the outskirts of the small town Red Woods, West Virginia was a decent sized cabin. It was big enough for a family to live inside, and looked more like a vacation home one might see in a summer brochure. It had a large wooden deck wrapping around it, and a balcony outside the second floor bedroom.

A loud alarm was going off from the large bedroom. Laying in a twin sized bed was a young man slowly waking from the sound of the alarm. His eyes were pale blue, his skin a rich tan with dimples on each cheek. His messy light brown hair covered his face as he slowly sat up rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He was tall, somewhat lean, but athletic looking.

His slight baby face and good looks made him look like the captain of the football team for a local highschool. But in reality he was twenty years old, and a middle school dropout. His name was Pete Steele, and he worked a night shift in a nearby all day and night mechanic shop. Red Woods itself was too small to have its own shop, but the town five miles to the north had one. He had been working there since he was seventeen.

Moaning softly from exhaustion he got to his feet and walked to the adjoining bathroom to take a shower. Once clean he ran a brush through his thick locks, put on a stained white t-shirt, and faded blue jeans, with simple brown work boots. He then made his way down the stairs to the kitchen. As usual his roommate and best friend since elementary sat at the table already reading the news on his phone.

Sitting at the table for Pete was a hot coffee with cream and sugar, just the way he liked it. He looked at his roommate Jase, who sat silently looking at his phone screen. One thing Pete could always rely on was finding Jase everyday waiting for him.
