Step One: Find a mat, preferably one that is just thick enough to keep any possible chill from the floor away from you legs.
Step Two: Sit on the mat in the lotus position (left ankle on right thigh and right ankle on left thigh)
Step Three: Find a spot on the wall or, if you have an old school metronome or grandfather clock, concentrate on a monotonous, but decently loud sound.
Step Four: While concentrating, breathe slowly in through your mouth. Then slowly release the breath through your nose.
Step Five: Push everything except the object of concentration out of your mind. If you focus on a sound, then closing your eyes might help with this.
Step Six: Maintain concentration and breathing as long as possible.
If you are trying to think something through, this practice is helpful, to me at least, in removing distractions that cloud judgment.

I understand that this is a rather simplified version of meditation, but it is the form that has been most useful to me these past few months.
