The Cloak part 3

02:32 Oct 09 2024
Times Read: 21

As morning arrived David was awoken by the sounds of his younger siblings running around outside his door their constant shouting forced David to bury his head into his pillow. His bedroom door was opened by his mother and he was able to smell the vomit from the bathroom due to another one of his fathers nights hitting the bottle.
His mother still dressed in her night clothes threw open the curtains and the light flooded the bedroom forcing David to cover his face quickly with his blankets. The mother grabbed the blankets and pulled them away from his face. She was angry and demanded he sit up and talk to her. His mood was uncooperative and defiant. As she demanded he get up and get ready for school she noticed a black piece of fabric sticking out from under the bed. She reached down under the bed and pulled out the cloak.”What the hell is this ugly looking thing David?” He sat up quickly and snatched the cloak from her hands” its part of my costume for the play Im in you know the one I told you about when you were to busy to listen to me.”She looked at him with wide angry eye's” I don't know whats got into you lately but it stops right now” you get up get dressed and we sit at the table and talk about this do you understand? He just frowned and replied yes.
David dragged himself out of bed and began his morning routine. Once dressed and organised he packed away his cloak. He had no intentions of sitting and talking with his mother so he tried to leave the flat unnoticed. His mother was able to stop him from leaving and forced him into the front room and ordered him to sit down. She handed him a letter that had arrived and began asking him if he was in trouble at school. David opened the letter and received the best news he could have wished for. He was accepted into the acting school and check for fifteen thousand pounds was enclosed. He stood up and smiled and shouted out how it was really going to happen. His mother snatched the letter and began reading it she looked up at David with a cruel smirk”well you can forget about this you are not going” David was furious and snatched his letter back” you can not stop me this is my dream my big chance” we already told you that you will be getting a job when school is done” we need the morning as Im expecting again. This was not what David needed to hear and in his defiant state he made his feelings clear” thats your problem mum Im not going to put an end to my chances in life because you can't keep your legs shut” David received a hard slap from his mother that left a red mark. “You can hit me as many times as you like because I will be going” You are 16 years old their is no way you are going off to London by yourself” and who is giving you fifteen grand?. That money could be better spent on this family not funding your stupid ideas about becoming a big time actor. “That money is mine Mr Sutherland is giving it to me to help me” she looked confused “who the hell is Mr Sutherland?” He is donating money to the school and me because he believes I have talent” she grabbed his arm aggressively and pulled him forward and angrily looked into his eyes.” So some rich bloke is filling your head with this garbage” David pulled away from her” this is my money and not yours” if you want to ponce of someone I suggest you get dad to pull his weight and get a job thats providing you can get him up and sober. Im not going to fund your illegitimate sprog. His mother lost her temper and began walking around him” How dare you speak to me like that” is this my own son calling me a tart? David grabbed his school bag and angrily snapped back “ you and your free range baby are willing to take my money for my education so you decide if you are tart or not” He turned away and ran to the front door closely followed by his mother she shouted that when he came home he would have to answer to his father but he refused to listen.
David ran all the way to school and his argument with his mother had made him over an hour late. Once at school he had to make his excuses for being late. David spent the remainder of the day alone reading his script and worrying about going home. It was finally time to go to his rehearsal's and on his way to the hall he ran into Molly. She tried talking to him but he was unresponsive and lost in his script. She was worried as David had been acting odd ever since they started on this play. Molly continued to try and talk to her best friend but got nothing from him he just went to the back of the stage and changed into his costume. Molly was left to just sit in the audience and watch from afar.
David walked out onto the stage and stood by his leading lady Grace. She had been done up in a lavish gown and he noticed some of the boys from his class sitting in the front row laughing and whistling at Grace. He was determined to be professional and give his best so Mr Sutherland would know he made the right choice.
He waited for instruction from his teacher and was given the order to go with his big love scene before they moved on to the next. David began feeling cold under the cloak and it was difficult for him to concentrate on Grace delivering her lines to him. Her words suddenly began to disappear altogether as he had noticed the vein in her neck twitching. There was nowhere els he could look it was so inviting and was making him feel an uncontrollable thirst. His breathing became heavier and his eyes were transfixed on her lovely neck. Everyone began waiting impatiently for him to make his move. Something took over and David uttered the words “come to my arms” Grace walked forward as the stage directions had instructed and David wrapped her in his arms and looked into her eyes with a fierce fire. Grace looked noticeably concerned by this look. David pushed his face into her neck and he became consumed by a vicious blood lust. Grace heard the teacher shout for them to stop and move onto the next scene. David had not let Grace go he had started to bite into her flesh whilst keeping a very tight grip on her waist. She began trying to pull away but he refused to let go. She began screaming and the teacher shouted for David to stop. Grace finally freed herself from his strong grip. She back away and put her hand on her neck “ you beast you bit me” she slapped David across his face the second slap he had that day. David put his hand on his cheek and tried to apologise. Grace ran off the stage and Molly stopped her and asked to let her see. She could see a bruise forming from Davids teeth marks. She looked over at her friend with angry concern” David what did you do?” The teacher told the girls to go put some ice on the bruise and come back straight afterwards. The teacher looked at a remorseful David” that was a very good performance but you don't need to get that carried away with your part.”
David sat on the stage waiting for the next scene to be set up. He could hear the other boys laughing and calling him a freak. David could hardly believe what had just happened something strange was happening to him he could feel it all over his body. A feeling of fearlessness and a strange power combined with a hunger that needed to be satisfied. His next scene was set up and ready. He was to be surrounded by angry religious men with crucifixes that force him to reveal his vampiric nature.
He stood in the middle of the stage and waited as the fog machine did its best to give off its eerie atmosphere. He waited as one by one the men appeared holding a holy cross. Suddenly he felt pain all over his body and the glow of the crucifixes began to hurt his eyes. A force was pushing him and making him feel sick to his stomach a repulsiveness was taking over. David began to panic quite noticeably but everyone felt he was just acting as they watched on. The pain was getting worse and he could no longer stand the sight of the crucifixes anymore. He swung the cloak around and over his face and he ran to the back of the stage and then fleeing outside. He was doubled over in pain and began vomiting. He collapsed on the ground and cried out for the pain to stop. He found himself bathed in moonlight and gradually the pain began to ease. Molly came running over to him she brought him a bottle of water and helped him back into the building. David changed out of his costume and began reflecting on what had just happened. He knew something was very wrong but how to explain it.
He went back to Molly and asked her if he could stay at her flat for the night. Molly agreed and the two left the school. As they began to leave the school grounds they were confronted by Grace's boyfriend. He was furious with David for his actions and the two became engaged in a heated confrontation. The boy grabbed David and began demanding answers. David tried to explain but found himself becoming increasingly angry. He pushed the boy away and warned him not to touch him again. The boy laughed and tried to punch David only for him to grab his hand and crush it until he dropped to his knees. Molly watched on in horror as she knew this was not like David he was kind and calm and never became aggressive no matter what others did to him. She begged David to stop as he would break the boys hand. Davids eyes had changed they were glowing and his strength was increasing. Molly pushed him hard and screamed stop! He let go and turned away he began kicking a nearby wall and threw a wheelie bin at a parked car smashing the windscreen. She begged him to calm down and tried to assist the boy as he cried in pain. David stopped his rampage and looked down at the boy crying on the ground. He gave a chilling warning never to come near him again or he would tear his throat out next time. Molly was shocked to see her friend act this way and the glow from his eyes really frightened her.
She walked over to him and asked “ whats wrong with you?” David finally calmed down and knew something bad was taking over him. “ you need to stay away from me Molly” I don't want to hurt you. Molly tried to reach out with her hand and convince him to go home with her and they would talk it out but David ran away shouting” you need to stay away from me its not safe to be around me.”
David ran until he found himself completely alone. He cried as he did not know what to do and had nowhere to go. He sat on the ground trying to think when he suddenly remembered Mr Sutherland had given him his phone number and address. He pulled out his mobile phone and dialled the number. After a couple of rings he got a reply he apologised for calling but he needed to talk to someone and have a place to stay for the night. Mr Sutherland happily agreed to help and told him to come to his house. David made his way to the bus station as Mr Sutherland lived the other side of town. David waited alone and tried to piece together the evenings events. As he boarded the bus he began to wonder how he was going to explain everything to his benefactor.

I watched the new incarnation of Salems Lot tonight and what a disappointment. This film missed the mark completely. It came across as rushed with a very weak script. I really found it bland and very boring not a patch on the original mini series's.
Having a cgi Mr Barlow did not make for good viewing.
Very disappointing and I think its time to stop with remakes you can't improve on perfection.

Can't decide if I should carry on writing my new story or not. I thought I did quite well with part one and not sure if part two was right or not.
Have to see if I can pull off part 3

How do you deal with a negative suspicious feeling? I have concerns about someone and their true motives which is making worry about a family members safety.
I keep saying I could be very about all this but at the same time it’s a case of what if Im not wrong and my concerns are justified.
I also have the problem of how do I get them to listen as most people don't and then its all to late.
I just feel please let me be wrong

The cloak part 2

02:25 Oct 05 2024
Times Read: 92

A new day had begun and David felt physically drained from the strange dream he had. As normal he made sure he washed and dressed in a smart presentable fashion. Grabbing his school books and script and the copy of Dracula that he had been given.
Sitting at the dining table trying to read and absorb his lines whilst his younger siblings ran through the flat and shouting and screaming at each other. David as always did his best to block out the noise and keep his mind focused. So far so good and he began to feel a great understanding for his character. The very idea of man who had lived for centuries and had so much power and strength was becoming very appealing and began to ignite a fire inside him. The inspiration was flowing through his veins until his book was snatched out of his hands by his inebriated father.
His fathers nicotine stained fingers ran over the front cover as he looked at the title in disgust”whats this rubbish?” David stood up quickly and reached out with the intent of snatching the book back “its mine I need it for school” his father scowled at him “ their supposed to be teaching you maths and english not this garbage” its not garbage its classic literature” the anger of his books being called garbage was to much for David to bare so he snatched his book back quickly and made his attempt to leave and get himself to school. His father followed him and shouted cruel names at him.” You haven't got much longer left at school so you need to start thinking about getting yourself a proper job so we can have another wage coming into this house” David ignored his father as he had no intentions of remaining at home once he had left school. The father's constant shouting and threats made David all the more determined to get Mr Sutherlands attention and be given the chance to go to the Drama school in London. As David neared the front door he was stopped by his mother. “ I want you straight home after school I need you to look after the kids” David turned and in a defiant tone “I can't I have rehearsal's after school I don't know when I will be back” he barged past his mother and ran for the stair's. She shouted to him that he had better come home but David continued to ignore her.
As David got outside he could still his parents shouting down to him so he ran as fast as he could out of the estate he didn't even wait for Molly he just ran. So desperate to get away from everyone and wanting so badly to succeed and leave them all forever.
David made it to school and ran into the building and hurrying past everyone. He ran to the main hall and threw his bag down on floor and sat on the stage and began crying. He was so sick of everyone telling him what to do and never hearing a kind word or any encouragement. He began to recite some of his lines in a desperate attempt to bring himself back together. He stood up on the stage and began saying over and over “ I am the master of the night my power can never be matched” I can never be destroyed and you will all bow down before me and worship at my altar. As he turned to face the door he could see a tall dark figure applauding him. Once the figure came into the light and he could see it was Mr Sutherland. He approached David and smiled” you really do have talent you stand out head and shoulders above the rest you should be very proud of yourself” David found himself getting lost in the glowing eyes and his hands began to shake and he felt short of breath. Mr Sutherland held David in a trance like state for what seemed like hours until Mr Sutherland held out his hand to him. “I have something for you David” he handed David a box and inside was a long black velvet cloak. The cloak had a red satin lining and a silver chained clasp. David ran his hands down the cloak and began to smile. Mr Sutherland insisted David try the cloak on. David placed the cloak over his shoulders and as he did a cold chill ran through his body. Mr Sutherland helped him straighten it out and told him he now looked the part and would have every opportunity to impress his audience.
David thanked him for his help and asked if he would be watching the evening rehearsal's. To Davids disappointment Mr Sutherland made his apologies and said that he was unable to attend as he had a business meeting in Manchester. Mr Sutherland looked straight into Davids eyes”I know your home life is not the best” your family stifles your talents with their selfish behaviour. I know how that feels my own family got in my way when I was growing up. I stood up to them in the end you need to realise your power and do the same. For now I will give you my phone number and address. He handed his contact details over to David” you may call me anytime I will help you should you need me” David thanked him when suddenly Mr Sutherland grabbed each side of Davids head and told him he would hold so much power over his audience tonight. David was left alone and completely stunned on the stage as the bell rang out.
Evening rehearsal's began and David paraded himself up and down the stage and gave a riveting performance. His teachers and the other students were blown away by his portrayal of the Count. David showed off his dominant and commanding side. Davids cloak made him stand out and was working a treat. David was exuding confidence and he began to feel more alive than he had ever felt before. As David took his bow he looked out into the audience to see everyone had gone silent. Everyone was slumped in their chairs with their necks exposed with puncture marks and blood dripping on the floor. David franticly stepped back was this real? He kept looking from left to right to see the scene of horror he closed his eyes in panic and when he opened them again everyone had come back to life and the room was once again filled with applause.
David ran off the stage quickly to run behind a screen as he stopped to take a deep breath the mirror on the wall showed his reflection slowly disappearing. David watched in horror and quickly removed his cloak and watched his reflection reform in the mirror. He could hardly breathe and broke out into a cold sweat. He franticly packed away the cloak and grabbed the rest of his belongings. He could hear his drama teacher calling his name but he just ran out of the building. He began wandering the dark streets alone and confused. He began feeling so desperately alone and tormented by these events. Hours had passed by and he realised he needed to go home and try to put all this to the back of his mind. He hoped everyone would be in bed and not notice his lateness.
David entered his flat as quietly as he could only to find his father waiting in the front room for him with a wooden bat in his hand. He knew his father was going to lash out at him so he dropped his bag on the floor and walked to the kitchen closely followed by his father. “ where the fuck have you been until this time of night” David snapped rehearsing at school. “ Not this late at night you haven't” you are lying little shit” and if you ever dare come home this late again I will wrap this bat right round your fucking neck. The father began slamming the bat down on the kitchen counters and shouting more abuse at David until finally David grabbed the bat from his father and shouting” just mind I don't wrap it around yours” Davids mother came into the kitchen demanding to know what was going on? His father began shouting how there was no way that David had been at school working on some stupid play until this late hour. She began defending David and assuring him she knew David was going to be late home. His father eventually gave in and left the flat in a rage. David was able to breathe a sigh of relief until his mother confronted him and demanded to know what he had really been up to. She went on to tell him that Molly had called round earlier worried about him as she had seen him run away from school. David remained silent so his mother told him to go to bed and they would speak in the morning.
David went to his room and shoved the cloak under his bed. He lay on the bed thinking about what he had witnessed and tried hard to sleep it away. Once he fell asleep his dreams were plagued with visions of him turning into a vampire before an audience and hearing Mr Sutherlands voice calling to him.

The Cloak Part one

03:01 Oct 04 2024
Times Read: 117

The sent of tobacco and stale alcohol is a nauseating smell for anyone to wake up to on a cold autumn morning. The sounds of young children running around and screaming outside David's bedroom was only adding to the unpleasantness he suffered day in day out.
David left the comfort of his single bed to open up his curtains and open up his window to rid himself of these unpleasant odours and sounds. The high rise tower block never gave off much light as the only view was more tower blocks and the local factories billowing out smoke as the night shift had ended and welcomed its day workers.
David was constantly in a race against time to ready himself for school and sneak past his father who was sleeping off another hangover. He always felt it was important to disguise his poor upbringing by making sure his uniform was well pressed and his appearance smart and everything correctly attired. David had learned to disguise his Lancashire accent by giving himself elocution lesson's. His ultimate goal in life was to become an actor and leave behind his miserable poor upbringing and his dysfunctional family behind him. It was now his final year in school and his dreams of theatre school in London were getting closer.
David had surrounded himself with books on poetry Shakespeare and many other great classical play writes.
He would spend hours alone in his room rehearsing and studying everything he could to maximise his chances of success. His parents cared little for him or their other children. His mother worked in a local pub as barmaid and often went with men for money which she often spent on herself instead of using it to provide for her family. His father was a violent alcoholic who never lifted a finger to help with the running of the home. He would often lash out at David and the other children.
David had learnt to avoid his parents and over his life he had raised himself and passed his domestic skills onto his younger siblings.
David was hopeful of getting the leading role in his schools next production. David hurried himself away from his flat and ran down the many stairs to the ground floor. He had a good feeling about his school day believing his last audition would be enough to secure leading role. He was greeted outside by his best friend Molly. She lived in the opposite tower block with her mother. The two had been best friends for five years and she had been a safe haven when David's home life became intolerable and abusive. She had always helped with his rehearsals and supported his dreams of becoming a great actor one day.
They walked through the council estate court yard chatting away about lessons and his chances of getting the lead.
As they neared the school and they blended in with all the other children David could hear the voices of the gang of bullies who loved to taunt him about his acting dream's. He always did his best to ignore them and Molly always gave his hand a reassuring squeeze so he could make his way through the school gates with his head held high and with confidence. The taunts were eventually drowned out by the sounds of other children laugh and shouting each other and teachers ushering them into the schools main building.
This was the point where David and Molly would have to part company as they were not in the same form and attended different classes. They always arranged to meet up at lunch but for now they would wish each other a good morning and go to their form rooms.
David walked in with his form and sat at his desk waiting as his form teacher called the register. He often sat alone as he always felt he had little in common with his class mate's. Once the register had been called the form teacher announced to the class that the drama students were to go to the main hall as they were to be given their instructions on their next production. Only David and two other students were taking drama for their studies and David was the only one who took it seriously. As he gathered his belongings he could hear the other children sniggering and as he walked past the rows of children sat at their desks one boy shouted” look their he goes Sir Ian Mckellen” the classroom was filled with laughter and as annoyed by this jibe David refused to rise to it and walked out of the classroom with his held high. He could hear the other two drama students making their mean comments about him. Their continued jokes about why should they bother going as they all knew David would be given the leading role as he always took the best parts in every play they did. As much as overhearing this upset him it also made him smile as it was good for him to know that he was the best and his hard work was paying off.
Once he arrived in the hall his drama teacher was very pleased to see him and began telling him this latest production would give him the chance to show off his talents and could give him a chance of securing a place at a very prestigious acting school in London. The school had been given funds from a wealthy business man called Mr Sutherland and he would be helping out with the drama department and this latest production. Mr Sutherland would be granting one student the chance of a lifetime at the School in London. Davids drama teacher was very keen for him to meet Mr Sutherland as she believed David was the perfect student for this opportunity. This filled him with joy as this was his dream come true.
David sat with the other students as the teacher announced the play. The play was to be the last vampire. Davids happiness turned to confusion as this kind of literature was not normally what they brought to life. The teacher went on to announce that David would be taking on the leading role of the Count. His confusion turned back to joy as he now had a chance to spread his acting wings even if it was a little unusual. The teacher began announcing who would be taking on all the other parts including his leading lady in the play. Scripts were handed out and all the art students were tasked with creating the sets. Molly was one of the art students which made David happy as she would be around and involved in his work.
The drama teacher began advising everyone that the production was going to be hard work and would count towards their GCSE grades and rehearsal's would be during school time and after school so a big commitment was essential if they wanted to succeed. David began thumbing through his script and a nervousness ran through him as the play had many dark and romantic undertones to it. The girl playing opposite to him was one of the schools most popular girls and every 16 year old boys dream so he was fully aware of the trouble this could cause him with the other boys.
The bell rang for the next class so David began gathering up his books and bag. He was stopped by the drama teacher as she wanted him to come meet Mr Sutherland. David was stunned to see a tall man with long black hair and dressed in a black suit came walking towards him. The mans skin was deathly pale and his dark eyes gave off a mysterious glow. He looked more like a member of a black metal band than a business man. He made David feel very nervous as he wanted to impress as this man could be the key to securing his future. Mr Sutherland held out his hand to David and as he extended his hand to be shaken he could feel an icy coldness as their hands met. Mr Sutherland spoke with a dominant authoritative voice. He had heard nothing but glowing reports about him and looked forward to working with him. Mr Sutherland was introduced Grace who had the leading lady role but Mr Sutherland barely acknowledged her much to her annoyance. He was only interested in David and was looking forward to seeing how well he would preform in the role of the Count.
David had to excuse himself so he could go to his next class Mr Sutherland smiled and simply said “I will see you very soon” as David left he could still feel the ice cold chill in his hand and he felt an overwhelming sense of fatigue wash over him. During all his other classes all his could think of was the lines in the play. His other teachers began noticing how distracted he was and were advising he stayed focused on one thing at a time.
By the end of the school day David ran down to his locker and discovered two books had been left in there. The first book was Bram Stokers Dracula and the other Montague Summers The Vampire his Kith and Kin. A note had been placed with the books
To help you get into Character
J Sutherland
David barely had any room in his school bag but managed to get one book in and carry the other. He could see Molly waiting patiently outside for him so he made his way out to her. The two began chatting away about their day and she congratulated him on getting his staring role. David knew Molly would always support him and he showed her the two books he had been given. She asked if he had ever thought about playing a vampire before. He confessed until today no and then he began reciting parts of his lines out loud. The show off came racing to the surface and he got louder and more dramatic as he continued to recite. Molly laughed and cheered her friend on and other passing students began laughing and mocking David but he didn't care as he shouted “ this will be my finest performance”.
David returned back to his dreary council flat and as he walked in his mother stopped him to inform that she would be out for the night and if wanted anything he would need to sort it himself. He began to try and tell her he got the lead in the school play. She paid no attention to anything he said as she was too busy applying her makeup in the mirror. He went on to say that he would be home late most days as he would be rehearsing but still no interest was taken. So David walked off to his bedroom and sat on the bed. He took out both books he had been left along with his script. He sat thinking about his chances to better himself and leave his miserable confines behind for good. Yet still he felt some resistance to the character he would be playing. A blood thirsty Count was hardly the great literary figure he wanted. David reasoned with himself that Dracula was a great literary character and if he was going to do this he would throw himself into the role body and soul. He spent the whole evening reading and researching until he could no longer keep his eyes open.
David fell into a deep sleep and his dreams began to take the shape of glowing eyes surrounding him and watching as dark figure began approaching him and holding out its pale hand to him and trying to entice him forward and pulling him to an old decaying house that was surrounded by tall trees and a descending mist that began to envelop around him. He could a mans voice calling his name and telling him to embrace the darkness within him. He began thrashing around in his bed and trying to pull himself away. Soon the sound of his alarm clock brought him back to reality and a new day had begun.

Sometimes I wonder if Im cut out for writing. I have all these ideas and a wild imagination. But something is going wrong and Im stuck. Im not sure what to do. So I start questioning myself and my ability to do this.
I think Im a bit lost normally being lost helped because I could loose myself in a my own made up world. Maybe I just need to clear my mind and settle myself down and the ideas will flow instead of getting jumbled up in a mess
