I once had a small flock of feathered friends I raised from chicks. I loved and cared for each one of them, each had its own personality and name.
I had 6 road Island Reds Hens
Two Mallard Duck Male and female.
And a beautiful white Turkey named Snowball, she was my protector of the flock.
None of them were for meat I raise them all for fresh farm eggs. I got more than enough to supply my family with fresh eggs daily and weekly. I raised them because I wanted my granddaughter to have the memories and know how to care for and raise livestock for food even if they were just for harvesting eggs.
This year she would have been learning the other side of owning livestock, which would be learning to care for a calf. Our local cattle and dairy farms had foster programs in the summertime for local 4 H kids to have a chance to work on local farms, work with calves until they were sold at auction. I still would like to get here in a 4 H program to teach her about what food really means and the process of getting that food to the supermarket.
