He was sitting across from me, a mischievous smile on his face. His green eyes picking up the golden light of the single flame between us. The shadows danced. People spoke around us but it was all a murmur.
It wasn't really dinner, but he had said, "Let's go out for dinner, we can try that place near the office, the one we saw on that walk when it started to rain."
I recalled that day, how an afternoon was interrupted by his work, but I had gone for the ride. In and out in a flash and he had taken his sports car, that he enjoyed driving around town. His black LFA. It was a few years old, but you'd never know it. We had walked to the market and it had started to rain. He had looked at me in the car as I had shut the door, his half smile giving way to a full one as the rain trickled down the window behind him. Small moments. These I recalled and cherished. We had found, on that walk a little wine bar and restaurant called Cellar Door on Lafayette Street in the Central Business District.
We both had wine, red and from Bordeaux. He was amused that they had cocktails for different points in history. The 1650, the 1912, and others. All unique mixes that would keep us coming back for years just to try them all once a week.
I watched him take a sip of his wine and close his eyes for a moment. I smiled and he saw my smile when he opened his eyes again.
"I'm glad we could get out, I know I've been busy," his regret was sincere, "but the project is almost done so I'll have more free time."
"Free time, you say?" I winked at him.
"Yes, I know. I won't know what to do with myself. Maybe I should take up woodworking. Or I should start painting again?"
"Do what makes you happy."
"Spending time with you, after so long apart, makes me a happy man."
I blushed. It was too long apart. I felt him take my hand and his energy tingled my fingers.
