The wind whipped at her face as they soared towards their location. She leaned forward, “Please hurry Mayonaka,” she whispered to the magnificent dragon. He made a low humming noise deep inside his throat. She looked forward into the graying sky. The rain hit her face as if they were small rocks being thrown at her. No longer able to stand the sting, she shielded her eyes and warmed her face on the dragon’s scales.

They arrived at last to the citadel which reached high into the sky. With a few beats of his mighty wings, Mayonaka flew up to the top window. The window was glass-stained with Mary and a dove. With one mighty blow, the beautiful glass was shattered. She watched the pieces twinkle as they fell into the shadows below.

She jumped off Mayonaka’s back and into the gloomy citadel. Her cape flowed smoothly as she slowly looked around. She turned around to watch the dragons swoop through the blackening sky. They made such noise with their lightning and thunder! With a flash, she saw rough outlines of unlit candles. She walked over to them, and touched a wick. It was immediately lit with flame. She touched the other candles in the same fashion until all were releasing a dim glow. She stood silent, staring at the ground with her back to the shattered window. She closed her eyes for a moment of relief from her stress. She heard the door in front of her creak slightly, and looked up with one red eye and smiled.

It was as if she woke up from a dream, a nightmare. She was back in the air listening as Mayonaka spoke to the other dragons. She observed her hands, covered in dried blood. This blood had become a part of her even though it tortured and scared her. She didn’t even know why it was there, it just appeared. She would wash it off, then the next day, it would reappear. She felt as if she’d done something horribly wrong. Her thoughts wandered back to her village and how they exiled her. She never knew why they did such things. They were cruel and treated her poorly. That was where the dragons took over; they helped her survive.

She then received an urge to return to the citadel to ask for forgiveness. She remembered that when she had returned to her village, it was burnt down. The people had been slaughtered and impaled. She felt as though it was her fault; he was looking for her, burning everything in his path to find her. It was an awful memory that brought tears to her eyes.

She had Mayonaka drop her off at the bottom of the citadel. She felt she needed some exercise in order to keep up her health and to give her mind some peace. She began to walk the desolate halls that were unnerving to normal humans. She wasn’t scared, hasn’t been scared of anything for many years now. She held her hand out in front of her, a lit with a gentle flame. She found this setting peaceful as shadows of a monster was cast upon the wall. The staircase spiraled up never endingly, as she continued up the last tower. Her mind began to race as her heart pounded ever faster fearing what would come.

Her hand touched the door with a soft thud. She took a deep breath and slowly pushed the door open with a slow creak. She couldn’t see anything; she could only hear soft buzzing. Her flame increased light only to allow her to see red everywhere. She gasped as she saw dismembered bodies spread throughout the room. The soft buzzing was flies sucking up blood off the chunks of mutated meat.

The stench was horrible! She had only been gone for under a day, but it smelt as though it had been ten. Tears ran down her face as she began to understand that she was the monster, the one who burnt down her own village and killed her entire family. She was the one everyone feared and had nightmares about. She was, Quiliai, the silent one.

Quiliai now understood the blood, the pain, the nightmares and the memories. She did everything unconsciously, never remembering what had happened. Now she understood her fate, she had become immortal. She was the one destined to torture society for all eternity. She could never reverse the pain she had caused, but could she keep the monster inside her under control? She looked around and began to think “What tore all these bodies apart?” Without realizing it, the blood under her fingernails had already dried.
