Yarrowai was a small spirit child. She was of the earth folk nestled in the hills of Paytempo. Her mother and father were Dalon and Marrowai, they were elders and highly respected members of the small village. Her two older sisters Fawn and raven were sleeping, as they always seemed to do most days. Her sisters took after their father mostly, tall and thin with full dark hair and creamy skin. Fawn the oldest was darker toned as Daron was and had full lips with a thin delicatly placed frame, she was tall and was strong as she was thin; fawn prided herself in being the fastest in the village, always challeging the other children in races as a small child. Raven was paler then fawn and was the gossping sort but shed look at you with bright flashing eyes and you'd know she was thinking something wild. But little Yarrowai took after her mother being one of the thicker set of people of the village. Yarrowai was pale and her stregnth was spoken throughout her wider placed bones. Her hair was light and her eyes blue, as her sisters she was beautiful; all three children took after their parents who were lovely. But Yarrowai and her mother were the only two people in the village who looked like this, people always joked and said they were sun women among the night people. The small child always shied behind her mother as the kind people said this, Yarrowai was always shy though she still smilled at the peoples kind words and was a happy child. The elders always called her smiling wolf, as she was never seen unhappy. Even as sickness spread over lands little Yarrowai was still not dispirited, she would always smile and notice how the forest was trying to clean the air of the illness. Many times her mother would take her small hand and take her to the homes of the sick villagers; somehow shed always manage to make their spirits lighter and most would slip a few coins into marrowai's hand, saying that the little one must have healed them a little. Gentle Marriowai would smile warmly and take the coins, always leaving them by the door as she left, though taking one so as not to seem rude. Even in times of death these people were calm and peaceful.

Yarrowai was picking through the tall grasses of the hill picking herbs for her sick sisters. As she picked the little budding flowers yarrowai hummed herself, picturing playing on this hill with her sisters last summer. But now her sisters lay ill in their small hutch, she preyed for their health as she gathered the items to heal them and placed them into the small basket she carried. She looked up at the sky and noticed its darkening, she stood up and knew her mother would be starting to worry for her. Yarrowai sang softly as she walked down the hill towards her home, she did not notice the small black snake in the grass behind her, following her back towards the village.

The Wolves

1/31/10

All was still in the forest that night. A winter storm was heading way and every creature was lodged safely in their nests or burrows. Already snow blanketed the ground and more lazy fat flakes were falling swiftly onto the earthy floor; the storm was getting closer. The wind blew the fresh snow about in harsh gusts , which was icy and stern to anything without the cover or fur; but no man wandered in these forests.

The forest of Izra belonged to the Wolves.

A light gray wolf turned her head and howled to the white wolf behind her, urging him forward. Both wolves were large and strong, with slightly protruding stomachs; the light gray wolf tended to stumble randomly as she ran. The white wolf growled back at her and bounded forward, surpassing her . The gray wolf stayed behind but then veered off into a nestle of trees, dodging them and jumping happily. The white wolf turned and looked for her and yipped impatiently when he saw how far behind she was; he wanted to get back their den before the storm. He waited for her patiently as she caught up, slowly walking to her mate and rubbing her face against his neck. He softly growled at her and the gray wolf jumped before running up ahead of him again. The white wolf just ran after her, knowing his affections were getting her excited like a pup and soon she would waste the energy. As they ran through the harsh night air clouds stormed overhead; they could sense the storm getting nearer. They slowed down their pace as they came to a large magnificent tree, one of the largest nestled in Izra’s forest and also the oldest. Roots snaked in and out of dirt; it was placed perfectly on top of a mound, but no snow rested here. You could not tell there was a hole by this trunk until both wolves leapt into it and disappeared.

The white wolf stood at the entrance of the den, shaking himself off from the wet snow that clung to his fur. There was no longer a gray wolf with him but a pale dark haired woman lay naked in a large pile of animal skins placed on the side of the large den. She whimpered slightly in an animalistic manner and rubbed her sore joints before laying down, to tired to clothe herself. She paid no attention to the noises of pain above her until with a thud a man jumped down to the center of the den. He was dark skinned and also naked, standing before his mate and stretching his muscles, watching her. He could see the weariness all over her sagging form, it seemed shifting was taking to much from her. He whimpered softly and turned to add more dead branches to a waning fire in the center of the den before laying next to his mate, pulling her exhausted form to him and laying her head on his warm chest. He pulled a quilt made of an assortment of rabbit furs over them and smiled at the woman’s soft groan as she snuggled against him. He kissed her ear lightly and rubbed her massive stomach, so unnaturally big she looked now in her human form; he couldn’t believe how much carrying had changed her appearance and how beautiful she still looked. If he didn’t know any better, he would say she was possibly carrying two or three of his pups in there, not that he minded. He smiled and licked his lips, tasting dried blood on them from dinner. He wiped his mouth before he kissed her lips delicately, but frowned as she did not even faintly kiss him back.

“what is wrong love.”

“Tired. Sore. “, she uttered, not opening her eyes and barely moving her lips.

“The shift is still hurting you”, he asked.

“yes”, she whispered into his chest, before slowly lifting her eyes to meet his gaze and flicking him with her tongue.

“Then to much energy is wasted. You should not shift for a while now, unless you wish to birth that way, you need to be strong for the pups hon and shifting is weakening you”, he paused and slowly spoke again, wondering if he would upset her.

“ I think it best if you do not hunt with me for awhile, I will bring our food home for you”.

His wife was half asleep, he could tell as several minutes passed by before she opened her lips and uttered a small “ok”.

He smiled and caressed her head, easing her further into sleep, pausing only to wet his finger on his tongue and wiping a small trace of blood from the corner of her mouth; he remembered how much messier she used to be in the first years of there togetherness. But his love was much older now, no longer a girl but a woman, and now she ate more delicately, he remembered how he used to laugh at her as she viciously tore off flesh, getting her face covered in blood.

Finally he laid down, making sure not to disturb his mate as he hummed softly as his breathing slowed and evened; he closed his eyes. His hand rested on her large stomach, running his hand lazily across it. He finally drifted off to sleep with a smile on his lips feeling light kicks beneath his hands.
