He looked at the headstone. Confusion overtook him and he slowly sat down on the ground. How could this be? No. It couldn’t be real…he was asleep, dreaming. He had to be. The name on the large headstone was carved deep into the stone. He placed his hand onto the dark, cold marble. He didn’t understand how this could be real. The air direction shifted causing his hair to blow into his face. He wiped it away. No. It couldn’t be. A single tear fell across his pale cheek. It couldn’t be real. He turned and slowly rose, finally standing and walking to the gate of the cemetery. It was real. He knew it was, how else could he explain everything that has been happening? Taking in a deep breath, he turned and quickly began to walk down the sidewalk that lined the busy street. He turned up his collar against the harsh wind. When he arrived at the corner of Hale Wood Ave. and 5th Street, he stopped. Which way does he turn? Looking ahead of him he saw the bright lights of the movie theatre. To his right, a long dark road leading down to the old paper mill and God knows what else. But, to his left… he crossed the street onto 5th street and continued to walk. Just keep walking, he thought to himself. Farther still, he walked. The sky darkened, and the air grew colder. The cold bit at his ears and nose despite the warm winter coat that he wore. Cars drove by, their drivers completely oblivious to his presence as he walked. He stopped as a man in a raincoat walked right by him, nearly knocking him into the street. The man did nothing, didn’t even turn to see if he was all right. Slightly disgruntled, he continued to walk. His destination was clear to him. Back to where it had happened. His pace quickened and his breath came out in puffs of white mist. Finally, he approached the old warehouse. The dark shape loomed ahead of him, and the boarded windows rattled in the wind. He quickly walked to the front warehouse door and squeezed through. The large, empty room smelled like dust and mildew. He covered his mouth preparing to sneeze and continued to walk through the dark, dank room. This is where it had happened. Shivering, he wrapped his arms around himself. Right here. Looking around, he suddenly felt dizzy. Placing his hand up against the wall to help him with his balance. It happened right here. A sudden noise caused him to jump. He quickly ran out of the building. Enough of this. He ran the rest of the way to the security of the streetlights. He continued back up the street. The cars sped bye, shining their bright lights upon his back, sending strange shadows across his face. Maybe…he thought…just maybe. He quickly turned, right in front of an approaching truck, the headlights blaring. He closed his eyes and braced himself for the impact. Nothing. Opening his eyes, he saw that the truck had driven right through him. Returning to the sidewalk, he continued down the street. So that was it, then. This was real… he was dead.

The Invasion of the Arachnids

She lay on the ground. She didn’t know what had just happened and she wasn’t quite sure that she wanted to. Suddenly a violent pain ran through her body. She felt as though her heart was being grabbed and squeezed with some hard bony hand. She heard a cracking as her chest heaved. Suddenly as though something was pushing from the inside of her, her chest pushed out and a pain shot through her like she had never known. Pressure was building against her ribcage and her bones were pushing out. Her skin ripped and muscles split and her screams ran through the woods in which she lay. Suddenly about a thousand tiny spiders burst from her chest, covered in blood and crawling over each other to escape. They swarmed around her rapidly, very painfully consuming her flesh. She slowly died as they ate her body.
