They all woke up with stretches and groans. One look at the clock had them cursing and trying to get dressed as fast as possible. They had overslept. Luna ran down stairs and grabbed a granola bar and her backpack. She had quickly done the essentials. Comb raked through her hair, teeth hastily brushed and clothes put on.

Laurel came down right after, took a look a Luna and started snorting. "Your shirt is buttoned wrong!" Luna rolled her eyes and ran into the bathroom and fixed it.

Finally they were all ready and they all left together. They went to their separate classes. After class Tyler grabbed her arm and she turned to look at him. His face looked gaunt. "Tyler, are you allright? You look like hell." He looked fidgitty and nervous. "I haven't been sleeping well," he answered. "Is it ok if I come over tonight?" He looked so pitiful. "Um...sure you can." It made her nervous the way Tyler was getting so protective of her all of a sudden.

Laurel, Ivy and Rose were the next ones to meet up with her. Tyler had practically glued himself to her side. The other girls were starting to get used to his constant presence at Luna's side. They all started talking at once, but Luna was lost in her own thoughts. All of her senses were becoming heightened again, which meant that it was getting time for her to transform again. All she could hope was that it would hold off until Tyler left.

Looking through file after file was making Luna's head hurt. It was playing hell on her heart as well. Reading through things her mother had written made her miss her all the more. Digging into this while everything was so fresh was probably not the best thing for her to do right now but she was quickly running out of options.

She scrubbed her face with her hands as fatigue set in. She was getting tired and decided to get some rest. She could resume this tomorrow when she didn't feel so weak. She trudged upstairs. The first thing she noticed was that her window was wide open, the curtains blowing in a chill breeze. She felt cold to her very core. She knew that they had been shut and locked. That was something she made sure of since her mother's murder.

After closing and securing the window, she carefully and quietly searched her room and then the rest of the house. Finding nothing, she went downstairs and grabbed the phone from the cradle. Quickly dialing the Miller's number she waited breathlessly for one of them to answer. When Ivy answered, she told her what had happened. All three girls came over at once, scared for their friends safety. If anyone was there, they would now have more than just her to contend with.

They decided to continue the search on the internet about the mysterious symbol, unable to find anything in their spellbooks about it. Low and behold, they found it. It was the symbol of a mysterious sect of demonologists. Goosebumps rose up on Luna's arms. She felt automatically that she had found part of her answer, someone there had killed her mother or knew something about the murder.

The description about the cult was very vague, no location, no phone number. There was a little more about it on a couple of different sites. She wrote down the author of the article and decided to try and reach them for more information. She looked at her best friends, so grateful that they had come over. She hated to be alone right now. She had been on the verge of a panic attack.

They decided to sleep in shifts so that someone was awake to keep watch. Rose took the first watch and the other three tried to lay down and get as much sleep as they could.

She fell into a restless, fitful sleep. Terrifying nightmares plagued her mind. Faceless demons tormenting. They were black shadows ripping pieces of her soul away. She woke up screaming. All three of the girls came running into her room. She felt a hand on her forehead and soothing words. She opened her eyes. Laurel asked, "What was it about Luna? Tell us while it's fresh in your mind. Dreams tell things." Luna took a few deep breaths and recounted the horrifying dream.

As soon as she had finished telling them, all of them had pinched faces. "Don't get freaked out, but that is not good," Rose pointed out. "Someone is trying to scare you away, but the good news is that we can take of that right now. I'll be right back." Luna looked at the other two, "What can you do to stop it?" Ivy spoke first, "We can put a spell of protection on you."

Laurel returned with a very large velvet bag. From inside she removed a large piece of black silk and unfolded it. On it was a pentagram embroidered in silver thread. "This is a very old family heirloom, it was passed down to us by our grandmother." She grinned as she unfolded it carefully and spread it out smoothly on the floor. Ivy and Rose started pulling out the other things from the bag. "Before we get started Luna, you need to know that this spell will take a while to do." Laurel took a white candle and lit it. Rose and Ivy grabbed Laurel's hand and they started chanting. "I invoke you Artemis asking you for powerful protection ,and hoping you would guide me even through my darkness days, We Invoke you Artemis Goddess of light, asking for protection and insight, we ask that you protected us and send all evil too a dark place, We Invoke you Artemis and ask for protection from all the sources necessary, of your grace and power too protect us and send the evil towards the darkness,a place where can never return, and hurt, touch, or grab a hold of us, So shall this be."

They continued this everyday for a week until the candle was spent. They stayed at her house every night and went to school everyday. Tyler had become very protective of Luna. During school he followed her wherever she went, sat with her at lunch, called her constantly at home. The only reason he wasn't at her house was because she told him that Laurel, Ivy, and Rose was there and that she was fine.

The second week the girls continued with the spell. Burning a silver candle and chanting until the candle was spent. They finished doing all of the particulars of the spell and folded the cloth back up. "Nothing can touch ya now, baby cakes," Ivy said. Luna felt much better. Her search was still not going anywhere, but she knew with her friends help that it wouldn't be too much longer.

She sat mute on her bed for days. The Miller's came over to help her out with the funeral details. They let the girls stay with her. They brought her food and tried to talk to her but she just stared past them, not really hearing them. Her mom had been brutally murdered, so far the cops had no leads as to who was responsible. The only thing they had to go on was it was closely tied to her research.

The community had really reached out to her. The life insurance would pay the bills for the house and the courts had allowed her to stay there. Being 17, they felt she was able to take care of herself. Tyler and his family had been by as well. She treated him with the same indifference that she treated Laurel, Ivy, and Rose.

One morning she woke up and was so angry. It seemed that the cops weren't even trying very hard to look for her mother's killer. She decided right then that she was going to find them herself. She got out of bed and went upstairs to the attic. Maybe she would find some clues as to what her mother had been working on. Or something. She found nothing there but family history. She learned more about herself, but not anything useful to find her mother's killer. This is where Ivy found her, covered in dust.

Ivy was glad that Luna was up and out of bed. She noticed the spark in her eyes and the color in her cheeks. "Need some help?" Ivy asked. She thought she was boxing her mom's things up. Luna looked her friend over and decided that she could tell her about her family. These girls had been her best friends forever and would accept her no matter what. "In a minute, let's get Laurel and Rose up here, too. I only want to have to go through this once." Ivy nodded and they walked downstairs. Luna was clutching some of the albums tightly to her chest.

They yelled for the other two girls and they all sat on the floor in the living room. She showed them the picture albums and explained to them about her family. And what had happened to her the night she left their house. They didn't even look very surprised, which really surprised Luna. Laurel spoke up, "We need to tell you something to, don't we girls?" They all nodded. "We're witches," they all said together. "We come from a family of them too. We've never told anyone else. Your the first." Rose said. Luna was crying. They all came around her and hugged her tightly. "Why are you crying?" Laurel asked her. "Everything I know is being turned upside down. Within such a short time I found out the hard way that I'm a werewolf, my mom...." Luna paused here, trying to regain her composure. The girls nodded. Letting her know she didn't have to finish that sentence. She continued, "and now I find out my best friends are really witches. It's just a little overwhelming." She was glad she was sitting down.

Ivy looked at her, "What were you looking for up in the attic?" she asked. Luna wondered briefly if she wanted to get them involved. She knew that it was going to be very dangerous. "Something to help me find my mom's killer," she blurted out. The girls looked at each other and nodded. "We want to help. Where do we start?" Laurel asked. Luna heaved a sigh and pushed her bangs back from her face. "That's the problem, I really don't know where to start. I was going to look on her computer next. After that, I don't know," Luna answered.

"Well, first things first, we need to eat," Rose said. With that said she went to the kitchen and Laurel and Ivy went to help her. While they were busy in the kitchen, Luna went to her mom's room. She hadn't been there yet and her mother's familiar scent enveloped her. Her mom's robe was hanging on the door and the silky fabric felt cool in Luna's hand. She pulled it free from the door hanger and held it to her face. Breathing in her mom's scent. She sank to the floor, sobbing into it.

She didn't know how long she sat there like that. When she had wept herself out, she went to the desk in her mother's room and unhooked the laptop. As she pulled it free from the desk, a folded piece of paper fluttered to the floor. She knelt down carefully, cradling the laptop in the crook of her arm. She picked it up and walked back into the dining room. She put the laptop down on the table and opened the paper.

It was a symbol. Carefully drawn in red ink. At least Luna hoped it was ink. The girls started bringing the food in and noticed that Luna was looking at it, they set the plates of sandwiches down and crowded around her. "Have you ever seen anything like this before?" Luna asked. All three shook their head no in tandem. "But we can find out," Rose said. "Let's eat and then we'll go home and see what we can find." They dug in and finished their meal. The girls left, taking the paper with them and Luna plugged the computer in and started a very frustrating search into what her mother had been working on.

Luna slept a peaceful and dreamless sleep. The last one she would have for a long time. Exhaustion had her sleeping for the rest of the day and into the late evening. The smell of food roused her and she sat up sluggishly. She dragged herself off the bed and down the stairs. Her mom had made her favorite for dinner, lasagna. She dug in gratefully. The rabbit she had devoured forgotten momentarily, she cleaned her plate.

Her mom looked at her, "You ready to talk some more? Or do you want seconds?" Luna looked up from her plate. "No, I'm ready to talk some more." Linda nodded. "What did you do last night?" Luna told her about all she done that night. Even about the rabbit. Linda laughed. "I did the same thing the first time. Did it gross you out?" Luna nodded. Talking about it made her stomach turn. She felt like she was going to lose her dinner. Her mom noticed the look on her face and nodded. "You'll have to be very careful when your in your wolf form, Luna." Her mother's tone was serious. Curious, Luna looked at her closely. "When your in your wolf form, your natural instincts take over. Rabbits may not be the only thing that look good to you." Her mom looked at her pointedly.

The implications of her mom's statement hit Luna and her eyes widened in shock. "You mean I could kill somebody?" Her mother nodded. She sat quietly for a few moments. "Have you?" she asked. Her mom sat a few minutes. "I almost did once. Their smell was so incredible that before I knew it, I was on top of them." She pushed her plate away from her. "It was your father." Linda didn't elaborate further. Luna felt like she was keeping something from her, but knew she wouldn't tell no matter how much she begged.

"You can turn into your wolf form anytime you want now that you've already done it. That is another aspect you'll have to be careful with because it is closely tied in with your emotions." Another shocked moment. "What do you mean?" she asked. Linda looked at her. "If you feel threatened or get angry, you will turn into a wolf. There is no way you can let anyone know about us, Luna. There is more to this world than you know. It is very dangerous for us." A sad expression crossed her mother's face. It was then Luna realized that there was more to this story than her mother was telling her.

"You mean from humans?" Luna asked. Her mom nodded. "That's part of it. But there's still more." The phone rang at that particular moment. Luna went to answer it and her mom started clearing away the dinner dishes. It was for her mother, there seemed to be another impromptu conference. She sighed heavily. "I have to go. I know we didn't get to finish our talk but we'll have to do it later." She went to her room to change into her dress suit. She hugged her. "I'll be back as soon as I can. OK?" Luna nodded. Her mom left and Luna went back upstairs to her room.

She had decided to go back to bed. She had been asleep an hour or so when she heard a knock at the door. She grabbed her robe and ran downstairs. She opened the door, the sherrif was standing there. Luna's heart hit the floor. Sherrif Andrews was a good friend of her families. He had been best friends with her Dad before he was killed. He took his hat off and wrung it between his hands. She could tell that he had been crying. "Luna, I have some bad news." Luna shook her head. "No, no!" She held her ears. He pulled her hands away. "Luna, your mother was killed tonight." He held her tight as she fell apart.

She was surrounded as soon as she made her way over to them. They all started talking at once, asking dozen of questions. Her mind couldn't keep up with their endless chatter. She looked at all of them. "If you want to know you have to hush for a minute." She sagged against the wall. Her backpack felt like it was loaded with a ton of rocks. The girls looked at each other and then back at her worriedly.

"You look awful, Luna," all three chorused together. She looked up at them and brushed the hair from her eyes. "Thanks alot, guys," she said with a rueful look. They pulled her back up and Rose took her backpack. They practically dragged her to class. "We won't ask you anymore questions for now." Ivy said. "But as soon as your feeling better, we want the full report." She was still looking worried. "I'm fine," Luna lied. "I'll tell you all about it, I promise." She knew she would. She told them everything. And maybe, just maybe, they could help her figure out what to do about it. But first, she needed to talk to her mom.

The day dragged on, she fell asleep in one of her classes and decided she should call her mom to come pick her up. There was no sense of being at school if she couldn't concentrate on what she was doing and was snoozing through the day. It would give her more time to talk to her mom anyway, and at least she knew Laurel, Ivy and Rose would leave her alone at least until tomorrow.

Her mom came to get her and the drive from the school was a quiet one. Once back at the house Luna slumped at the table. Linda looked at her. "There is something I need to ask you, mom," Luna said quietly. Linda gave a resigned sigh and held up her hand. "No, there is something I should have told you a long time ago. Come with me, there's something I want to show you." Luna stood and followed her mother upstairs to the attic. A million questions running through her head.

Linda shook out an old blanket and told Luna to sit. She went to a huge trunk and opened it, pulling out dozens of photo albums and books. She handed Luna one of the photo albums first. It was extremely old. The pages were yellowed and the pictures were the sepia quality of the early twenties. Her mom waited while she flipped through the pages. Luna noticed that one girl stayed the same in all of them. She looked up, it dawning on her that the girl was her mother. "But, how?" she asked.

Her mom smiled. "Why don't you tell me what your thinking first." Luna just looked at her. "I think I'm in an episode of the Twilight Zone." Luna blew the hair from her face. "Something happened to me last night." Her mom waited. "Mom, I think I turned into a wolf." Her mom nodded.

Her mom sat a few minutes. "I was hoping we wouldn't have to have this talk. Sometimes it skips a generation, which is what I was hoping for you. I wanted you to have a normal life." She sighed. "We are werewolves, Luna. It runs in families, and can also be transfered by being bitten by another wolf. I thought it had missed you. Most people change before you did." Luna was dumb struck. "Why didn't you ever tell me?" She was getting very upset that her mom had kept this from her.

Her mom answered, "Like I said, I was hoping that it had missed you. Sorry you had to be surprised like that." She went to hug Luna, but she pushed her away. "This girl in the pictures, she's you, isn't she?" Her mom nodded. "How old are you really, mom?" Her mom looked at her laughing. "I'm really 87 years old. We don't age the way humans do. Kinda explains why I chose to be a history professor, doesn't it?" Now that Luna thought about it, it did. Who better to teach history than someone who actually had been there for some of it.

She wanted to talk more, but was so exhausted that she was having a hard time concentrating. "This conversation isn't over. But I'm really tired, mom." Linda nodded. "I understand. Go get some rest and we'll talk more about it over dinner." She hugged her mom and went to her room. Falling asleep with her shoes on.

The cool night air blasted her in the face. She drew in a sharp breath, not prepared for how fast it had cooled down outside. She began the walk back to her house with the stars twinkling above her. She made it to the edge of the Miller's landscaped lawn, just into the canopy of the trees beyond. She looked up at the sky and noticed that it was a full moon. The bare light filtered down through the leaves, barely illuminating the forest floor. She was still able to see her way with no problem.

Halfway down the path she started sweating heavily and her heart started hammering in her chest. Everything on her started hurting at once. Even her hair hurt. She tripped over a root and went sprawling to the ground. She looked down at her hands and was horrified to see they were contorted. The tips of her fingers felt like they were going to explode. Claws erupted from the tips of her fingers and she started screaming.

The pain was intense. Her breathing was short and labored. She curled into a ball with her head touching her knees. When the pain finally stopped she looked at herself and screamed. What came out was a hoarse howl. She now had paws, a long tail, and a chocolate brown fur covered her body. Her clothes were laying in shreds next to her.

She now understood why her senses were enhanced. There was definitely something wrong with her. She was a werewolf. She had transformed into a monster of childhood nightmares. She didn't have time to think about anything else. She caught the scent of another animal and was following the scent before she could even comprehend what she was doing. She found it with ease and chased it down. She was horrified at what she did next. It would haunt her dreams for the rest of her life.

After her snack she ran the countryside. Exploring everything. She ran through the mountains with an ease only a wolf could know. She explored old things that were now new to her. The scents were stronger and different. She ran on this way until the sky turned grey. She made it almost home before the pain hit again. Luckily she was still in the cover of the woods. Her body contorted in pain as she became human again. She laid there a few minutes and tried to stand up. She made it after falling a few times and stumbled into her house. Thankfully her mom had left the door unlocked for her.

She looked down at herself and noticed she was covered in mud and bruises. She got clothes from her room and climbed into the shower. She would have to go to school even if she felt like she had been run over. She hurriedly dressed and grabbed her backpack. On her through the kitchen, she grabbed a Dr. Pepper and a bag of chips and was out the door before her mom had even woken up.

Thankfully on the way to school, there was no sign of Tyler. She made it to the schoolyard and sat down at one of the picnic tables. She started on her impromptu breakfast when she felt the bench give beside her. She looked over to see Tyler. She looked quizzically at him. He grinned at her. "Nice breakfast," he quipped. She smiled, "Yeah, the rabbit I had earlier wore off already." It surprised her greatly that she had said that out loud. She was glad he laughed. "Your hysterical Luna. See you later." The bell rang and she was glad that he didn't realize how true her words were. She looked up and seen Ivy, Laurel and Rose all looking at her with grins on their faces. She groaned, and walked over to them, wanting to get the grand inquisition over with.

Luna took her usual route to the girls' house. It wasn't far from where she lived, which was good because she didn't have her license yet. Riding a bike in the mountains was more adventurous then she cared to be. She only had to go through the woods and she would be there. As the crow flies as some say. The leaves crackled under foot. They sounded extremely loud to her for some reason. She wondered what was wrong with her.

It seemed that all of her senses were enhanced. She could see farther than she ever could before. She could smell the animals that were hiding at her approach, could almost hear their tiny heartbeats thundering in their chests. She wondered if someone had slipped some drug into her drink at school. She shook her head at the thought. No one had gotten close to her drink. But what could be wrong with her. She was kind of afraid to tell her mom, knowing her mom would be wondering if she was taking drugs. Luna almost laughed out loud at the thought.

She made it to the Miller's house in record time. She didn't stop to think about it any more. Maybe it would pass. She knocked on the door. Rose answered, squealing and pulling her inside. "I thought you'd never get here," she said. Luna looked at her with a grin. Getting there quicker than usual was still not fast enough for Rose. Rose pulled her through the spacious living room to the kitchen, where the other two were. They were in the middle of fixing snacks. Their favorite show was coming on and they were all going to snack and watch. Luna watched, fascinated. The girls worked as a team and never seemed to get in each other's way. She couldn't even boil water so she was grateful for not being asked to help them make the food. She did however carry an enormous bowl of popcorn and her drink to the living room.

She was grateful for the diversion the T.V. provided. Even though it seemed so loud that it hurt her ears. Every explosion had her jumping out of her skin. Laurel thought it was extremely funny. Luna laughed along with her, keeping her worries to herself. Too soon the show was over and the Ivy began questioning her about why she was with Tyler that morning. Luna had known that was coming. All of them thought he was cute, and one of them actually being seen in public with him had to be discussed.

Luna gave them the short version of what happened. They all looked a little disappointed and relieved at the same time. Rose piped up, "Well, at least he talked to you, that leaves hope for you yet." They all thought that Luna was a little too serious and needed to lighten up. They were always trying to get her to go to school functions with them. She did sometimes, but not enough for them.

Her cell phone buzzed about that time, letting her off the hook from anymore questions. "It's mom." She flipped the phone open. "Hey mom." Linda asked her if she wanted her to pick her up. Luna really didn't want the rundown of her mom's conference. Bunch of stuffy history professors. None of what they talked about really interested her, or her mom for that matter. Her mom was more of a romantic and always ended up in arguments with other professors. "No, I'll walk. Fresh air will be good for me." They ended their conversation and Luna looked at Laurel, Ivy, and Rose. They were all chatting about Tyler and the other available boys in their school. Luna grinned and told them she needed to go before it got too dark for her too see her way home.

Ivy looked at her. "You shouldn't have too much of a problem, it's a full moon tonight." She winked at the other two. Luna rolled her eyes. "I'll be sure to be on the lookout for stray werewolves and fairy circles." They all laughed and walked Luna to the door. "See you guys at school tomorrow." They all called out their goodbyes and Luna walked into the night.

It was a typical fall day. A day like any other in the small town of Oakton, North Carolina. The trees were in their full glory of color and the air had a smoky scent. Luna Hill walked throught the leaves, listening to the crunch under her feet. She was not impressed by the beautiful day. It was one of many in this not so typical girl's life. She had been born in this town and the splendor was now lost on her.

As she made her way to the local high school, she caught the familiar reek of the dairy farm. She wrinkled her nose in distaste and walked faster. Tyler Adams walked up next to her and she almost bumped into him in her haste to leave the wretched smell behind. She smiled nervously at him. He looked at her and smiled back. "What's the hurry? That eager to get to school?" he asked with a dimpled smile. She relaxed a little and slowed her pace. She smiled and said, "No, just trying to escape the stench." He looked at her with a puzzled expression, "Do I offend?" He made a show of smelling himself. She laughed, "No, I meant the cows." She shook her head at him. "Really?" He asked. "I can hardly smell them from here." He shrugged and they walked the small lane the rest of the way to school, chatting about classes and people they knew.

Once they reached the main gate friends started calling them. Tyler looked at her and grinned sheepishly. "See ya around, Luna." She nodded and walked over to a group of girls who were waiting for her. Laurel, Ivy and Rose Miller had been her best friends since first grade. They were sisters obviously, their parents naming them after local flora, much to their despair. It had been their unfortunate lot to be given the nicknames of the Greenwich Witches. Laurel gave Luna an impish smile. "Oooh, Luna!" Luna shook her auburn head. "It wasn't like that Laurel, so don't." The sisters looked at each other. "Oh, sure," remarked Ivy. Rose looked her over laughing, but took pity on her. "Oh come on girls, she'll tell us all about it when we quit tormenting her." She grinned.

The bell rang and saved her from anymore embarrasing questions from her friends. She was the quiet one. The one who didn't date and took her studies very seriously. She was going to get out of this little town one day, and she knew that the only way that would happen is if she made it happen. She grabbed her books from her locker and sprinted to class. Barely making it before the bell rang. Breathlessly she made it to her seat. She was in a daze for the rest of the school day. Alternating between zoning out and feeling an intense feeling of impatience and unease. She didn't know why and it was bothering her greatly.

The home bell rang and she made it out without being accosted by Ivy, Laurel and Rose. She huffed a sigh of relief. She didn't really feel like the normal banter about boys today. She made her way down the lane. Secretly hoping that Tyler would appear again, but her walk home was solitary. Once at home, her mother asked her about her day. Linda Hill was the kind of mom who was over interested in her child's life. She worried over Luna's lack of a social life. She thought that Luna was brilliant, gorgeous, and much too down on herself. But what mother didn't think their child was the best. Linda knew that she had gotten very lucky with Luna. She never had any problems with her. Which worried her even more. At Luna's shrug, she pressed on. "I have a conference to go to tonight. You know your more than welcome to go stay with friends if you want to. So you don't have to be here alone." She looked at her hopefully. Luna gave her a noncommital answer and slogged up the stairs. Linda sighed. She had tried. She went upstairs to her room to finish preparing for her conference.

Luna always finished her homework at school. The only exceptions were book reports and tests. She flopped across her bed and plugged her earphones in. Grabbing her Ipod and cycling through until she had something heavy on. She closed her eyes and drifted off.

She dreamed of running through mists. Apprehension building, she felt that something was after her, but she couldn't see it. She kept running. The landscape never changed. It was always misty and she felt like she was running in circles. She woke groggy and disoriented. The sense of impatience she felt earlier even stronger now. Maybe she would go stay with friends. It might help make these feelings go away. She called Ivy and was invited over. She ran back upstairs to grab a jacket, jotted a quick note to her mom, and was out the door in ten minutes.
