There are millions of children of all ages that live with Epilepsy. It is something that they live with every day. Many are on medication. However, some have to have surgery to remove the part of the brain that is causing the seizures. Many lead a normal and healthy life. So what is Childhood Epilepsy?

Childhood Epilepsy is a condition where a child has seizures that are often caused from different things. It is different for each child. He or she may have multiple seizures a day, once a day, once a week or month. Each child varies on how often the have them, how old they are as well as what type that they have. It is scary for anyone to have a seizure but scary when a child has one.

Often times there is a cause that led to the seizure. Cerebral Palsy is a medical condition were there is a possibility of having seizures. Although they may never occur but it is very possible. Very strong headaches like Complex Migraines can also be the cause of seizures. In essence, the brain short circuits leading to a seizure. If the migraine progresses to a certain point, a seizure may occur. Medication is often prescribed after a certain number of seizures. If one does not work another one is tried. Topamax, Depakote and Keppra are three of multiple medications that can be taken to help prevent anymore seizures. Many are on medication for a long time before being able to slowly weened off. Others are on medication the rest of their life.

Many kids with Epilepsy lead normal lives. They have friends, go to school. In addition older kids that are eligible to have a job are in the work force. Being bullied for being different is one of many things that go on in schools. Eventually, things die down and kids grow up and realize that the person they bullied is as normal as they are even though they have Epilepsy. Furthermore, some may not know that they know someone who has Epilepsy. In some cases, one may be on a Ketogenic Diet where they cannot have certain foods and drinks. Aside from that, many play sports. However, they often have to be careful because if they are hit in the head the possibility of having a seizure increases dramatically.

I am one of the millions of kids that has lived with Childhood Epilepsy. They began when I was twelve years old and I have had about twelve seizures total since then with most of them being in school. The result of the seizures were from Complex Migraines in addition to a family history of migraines. I participated in various sports such as softball, soccer and track. Many that knew me when they began knew that I was different. Through the years I have had different people try degrading me with no success. I knew I was as normal as everyone else no matter what was said about me. I have been on three different medications with the current one I am on being the best of the three. Topamax is also an anti depressant. With me I hardly wanted to eat and was always tired. In contrast, I was very energetic and gained thirty five pounds while on Depakote. Keppra has been the best medication for me in the trials to find the best one for me. I have days where I am tired and days where I am energetic. It has been a long journey but I have learned how to cope with it. As a result, I have been able to teach others that living with Epilepsy is simply something different.
