The following is reference for Outdoor Survival. Each is in regards to a particular subject.

1. Insects: The real dangers of outdoor survival here in the U.S. or in any region that is heavily wooded are the insects. Insects, obviously, are also found in the cities, and it is best to understand that either in the wooded areas or the concrete jungle, insects can kill you.
Insects can and do pass on disease and parasites. In wooded environments, it is best to stay away from swamps or any areas where there is settled water. If you do not have a mosquito net, and yes, either in the woods or in suburban areas a net is a good idea. REMEMBER, I am speaking about a survival situation, even though netting might be useful regardless of circumstances.
If you do not have netting OR repellent, then try covering yourself (bare parts) with mud, especially when you sleep at night. Tucking your pants legs into your socks or boots helps as well. Remember repellents can also be used on clothing and the need to put them on the skin is not always necessary.

Try carrying some anti-malaria tablets with you and take them according to the directions. Even if you are bitten by infected mosquitos, you won't become ill for a week or so. If you have a destination to reach where there may be treatment you should be Okay. With West Nile virus and the likes hitting areas of the U.S. it is more than possible that malaria will be prevalent in certain areas.

Very informative site for Malaria:

Ticks are numerous in many wooded areas of the U.S. including cities. Always inspect your bodies for ticks or other pests. If a tick attaches itself to your body, cover it with a drop of iodine from your Medical Kit or any other strong disinfectant. If you smoke you can attack it with a lighted cigarette just as long as the tick isn't too deeply imbedded. Be careful when removing a tick, if the head stays in the wound it can cause infection. Your Medical kit should also include tweezers.

Depending upon where you live Scorpions may also pose a threat. they like to hide in clothing, bedding (Sleeping blankets), or shoes. Spiders and centipedes are just as bad and their bites and stings can make you sick, depending upon the species.

Some information about Spiders:Utilize the complete site.

Spider information

Chiggers, wasps and bees are pests whose stings can be fatal in some cases. Chiggers, mites and fleas bore under the skin and cause painful sores. Usually a drop of oil or pitch will kill them. Treat ant, wasp, and bee stings immediately. The Link Below will take you to a listing of Insect bites.
