Come get some!

What is with America's love for zombie movies? It seems like every year there are at least five zombie movies that grace the theaters.... Not a lot are that great, and even fewer have any semblance of originality, yet we still buy the tickets, and Hollywood keeps churning out these films. I Even I have written a zombie movie! (it does verge on original...believe it or not!) But still, why? What is it about zombies that makes us keep watching? I have come up with three reasons, and I would love to hear what your take is!

Reason One: ACTION

A film about zombies promises non-stop, over the top, ACTION! (if nothing else) If I buy a ticket to a zombie movie, I am guaranteed an hour or so of crazy, bloody, teeth gnashing, gun toting gore! Hooray! Who doesn't like taking their girlfriend to a movie they know they'll get some scared snuggles out of? Or better yet, who doesn't love to barbecue, get drunk and watch the end of the world in the safety their own home with all their buddies? No one I know! Zombie movies keep us on the edge of our seats until the credits roll, even though we know that it would be impossible to survive a zombie apocalypse.

Reason Two: SURVIVAL

At one point ,in each of our lives, we all speculate what life would be like if society broke down. Could we survive off the land as did the ancient people of the early 20th century, you know the ones who had to WRITE WITH A PEN before the invention of the computer? Would we make it? I imagine it would be like summer camp except with much less singing and much more archery... Point is, it's exciting! It's something that we, as beings of this century, will never really have to worry about and thus its fun to entertain the thoughts of what if....

Reason Three: KNOWING WHO TO KILL

The final reason is because in zombie movies, there is NO GREY AREA. There are no "good" zombies (unlike the onslaught of "good" vampire movies) zombies are ALWAYS evil. 100% evil, there is no moral ambiguity about killing a reanimated corpse. We love that idea! We enjoy entertaining the idea of mowing down hundreds of mindless evil things, specifically because there is nothing like that in real life. In real life there are always two sides of a story. Never a side that is completely evil. Evil is subjective, humans don't like grey. In fact I'd go so far as to say HUMANS HATE GREY AREAS. That's why we chose to believe in absolute good and evil. It's easier to gage extremes then what lies between. We want to know where we stand, and zombie movies do that exactly. They define absolute evil. In a zombie apocalypse all human issues become petty and the population works together for the survival of the species.

So, I make the argument that zombie movies have been wrongly categorized as horror. Zombie films should be categorized as fantasy. It is every humans fantasy to have right and wrong so obviously defined. Since childhood we are taught to be good, to do the right thing, but then we enter adulthood and realize the line between good and evil is often blurred.... This is one of the most horrifying things about becoming an adult. So we fantasize about a world truly run by moral polars. Enter, zombie fantasy!

Why do you think humans love horror?

What is it that makes us love the horror films we do? Are the feelings of terror what we strive for? Is it morality in some twisted way? Tell me! I am curious what you think!
