A modern Nuclear Submarine is unexplainably stopped by some strange underwater creature that leaves something stuck in the propellers. When the captain Pete Mathews (Kenneth Tobey) gets back to shore he pulls together a team of scientists Lesley Joyce (Faith Domergue) and John Carter (Donald Curtis) who determine that a giant Octopus which has grown to enormous proportions because of underwater exposure to radiation, is alive and roaming the seas. As one of the scientists pulls together a team to get more information about the creature, it moves to the waters around the San Francisco Bay. Because of the high-radioactivity of the monster the normal methods that should destroy it dont work. The giant sea creature comes ashore and destroys the Golden Gate Bridge, the Ferry Building, and then Market Street before a team of scientists and soldiers can stop it.
