"The Damned are a punk and gothic rock band formed in London, England in 1976. They were the first British punk band to release a single (New Rose), put out an album (Damned, Damned, Damned), and tour the United States.
The Damned are generally regarded as one of the founders of gothic rock, and their earlier music would later be a large influence on punk subforms. They have incorporated many different styles into their music and image, most notably from garage rock, psychedelic rock, the theatrical rock of Screaming Lord Sutch and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Vanian's vocal style has been described as similar to a "crooner,"[1] an oddity for a punk rock vocalist.
Throughout their history, Damned have dissolved and reformed many times, with singer Dave Vanian as the sole constant member. However, the lineups have always included either guitarist Captain Sensible or drummer Rat Scabies (or both)." - Wikipedia
The Damned's 'always lead singer' Dave Vanian was a grave digger and was notorious for rumors of sleeping in a coffin or with arms crossed on his back like a corpse (when on tour). He tended to dress in tuxedos or all black and could be considered the large part of the gothic influence on the bands direction. The Dog (a gothic tune circa 1984) is written about Claudia...the famed child vampire of Anne Rice.
The darker more gothic songs would be found on Phantasmagoria and The Black Album...but even in their earlier (and later) work, horror and the macabre influenced the style and there are dark gems throughout the bands history.
