The Metal Men are from wayyy back. Way back to when they used to still advertise Hostess Twinkies and X-Ray vision glasses in comics Aw Jeeze! Here's the story on these guys.
The Metal Men were presented as advanced artificially intelligent robots, created by scientist Dr. William "Will" Magnus. "Doc" Magnus states that their intelligence and personalities are generated by devices called "responsometers". The Metal Men, basically, mirror characteristics commonly associated with their namesake metals, both in personality and in substance... as if a metal had a personality. Sheesh.
