"Star Jars. Now that's a name I haven't heard in a very long time.."
Star Wars hasn't always been just toys, games, and t-shirts. From 1998 through 2000 a high-end ceramics company was slowly producing some of the best Star Wars cookie jars that the world has ever seen.
The first four Star Wars cookie jars were released to an unsuspecting public. Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, and C-3PO were Star Jar's introduction to the Star Wars collecting community. (Cookie Jar collectors also pounced on the line.)
An advertising sheet targeted for retail chain buyers showed prototypes for two more jars lined up for production. Jabba the Hutt and his always popular bounty hunter henchman Boba Fett were on the drawing board for the next wave of releases.
Time passed. As anxious collectors waited, an unexplained delay followed. Finally two more cookie jars appeared: Jabba and Wicket the Ewok. Boba Fett's mold was loosely based upon C-3PO for the humanoid shape and shoulders but for some unannounced reason, Boba had been delayed.
During mid-production on Jabba and Wicket, Star Jars folded. The Palm Beach, Florida company closed their doors.
eBay was flooded with the remaining incredible cookie jars at starting bids of a mere $10. Hundreds of boxes went that way with winning bids in the $70-$85 range. When that deluge was over there wasn't the usual follow-up wave of resellers turning their new inventory for quick cash. Most of the cookie jars had gone to collectors who to this day hold on to them tightly. Even with the recent release of Episode III cookie jars by Cards, Inc. the value and popularity of the Star Jars set was unshaken.
The missing piece to this line - the original Boba Fett cookie jar crafted for the sales sheet - has never been found. Several prototype collectors and most of the collecting community at large have looked high and low for any signs or even rumors of it's fate. Like the stealthy bounty hunter it's imaged after, Boba Fett has slipped quietly away without leaving a trace.
