Few films created such a stir as The Matrix, generally considered to be the most impressive SF film in many a moon, with its high-tech visuals and supercharged plot. Jake Horsley's new book is an ambitious and atmospheric attempt to transfer the world of the Matrix to the printed page. It's an ambitious project, given that the film relies on extravagant special effects, but remarkably successful. The dark and menacing universe conveyed within these pages is realized with tremendous panache, and Horsley is clearly aware that the basic concepts (the mutability of reality, the intermingling of cybernetics and humanity) are all basic literary SF concepts that long predated the films, particularly in the work of modern SF master Philip K Dick, who is the eminence grise behind The Matrix. The object of the central character here, The One, is to liberate as many people as he can from the programmed enslavement under which the inhabitants of this world labour (i.e. ourselves, some years hence). This handbook addresses every aspect of the philosophy and thinking of The Matrix and serves as the definitive field manual for those wishing to plunge themselves into this universe. Jake Horsley is a writer of real skill, and this is essential reading for SF enthusiasts.
