Introduction
I will start with a basic introduction into a few of the beliefs of myself (and others) that will be referring to during this essay. The best place to start is with the fact that I believe that Psychic Vampires (and Sanguine Vampires) exist. The second point is the fact that Vampires are not immortal, in fact it's quite the contrary, Vampires are perfectly mortal, just like you and everyone else. The third point is that about the three planes of existence:
Physical
What you see around you, the chair you are sitting on, your physical body etc. (If we didn't speak of this one I may as well say that everything exists only as energy on the Astral plane...)
Mental
The world of thought, everything you think of is here. (We will most likely not speak much of this, but it is a good idea to know of it.
Astral (Or metaphysical)
This is the plane we will come across most often, this is where psychic energy exists, this is where auras are. Some people (who can see auras) have the ability to 'see' parts of this, or at least entities belonging to that plane.
The fourth point is that of the nature of psychic energy. Psychic energy is produced by ever living organism (even amoeba) though the amount produced depends on the size of the organism (the aforementioned amoeba would have very little). Psychic energy is what the astral body (like your physical but on the Astral plane) is made of, your soul in turn feeds off this energy (much like you eat and drink) therefore the amount of psychic energy drops, only to replaced by that which is created by the physical body.
The fifth point is maybe one of the defining features of Psychic Vampirism, and that is it's individuality to each Vampire. Each and every Vampire has a slightly different way of feeding. Some skeptics may say this is the concepts downfall, a place where you can say “It's all made up”.
But I assure you that it this is not the case.
Why does Psychic Vampirism exist?
Psychic Vampirism exists because some people (the Vampires) cannot produce as much psychic energy as the need and should, this is called an Energy Deficiency. Because of their Energy Deficiency they require energy from another source and, therefore the Astral Body starts to take energy from it's surroundings (eg. from the people around you). This is what is called (by some) Unintentional Vampirism, known as this because it is not conducted (nor controlled) by conscious thought.
Some Vampires go through their whole life feeling very ill because they don't realise their condition and try to 'obtain' energy. I'm not saying the Astral Body can't fend for itself, I'm just saying it's not good at it. Whereas a lot of Vampires nowadays realise their 'condition' and begin to feed actively.
The realisation is known commonly in the Vampire Community as 'Awakening'. This usually happens during the late teens, during the awakening Vampires start to notice that people who are around them a lot seem to feel very tired and 'drained' (in the literal sense if they knew). Once a Vampire realises their condition they begin to learn how to control it. This then makes them an Intentional Vampire, because they consciously intend to drain energy (though occasionally the Astral Body does it for itself).
There are many ideas about the progression of Psychic Vampirism but I present here the one I believe to be true.
TOUCH – Ability to take energy when touching someone.
LOCALE – Ability to take energy from close locale.
TENDRILS – The Astral Body 'grows' tendrils to reach further than close locale.
EYE CONTACT – The eyes are always thought of as being able to easily transfer energy.
FAR LOCALE – The ability to take energy from a further distance.
RANGED – The ability to take energy from people a long way away.
Touch
This is where all Vampires start, this stage doesn't require any conscious thought therefore it is achieved by unintentional as well.
Locale
This is where Vampires then move onto, this still does not require conscious thought but probably means that the Vampirism wasn't temporary.*
Tendrils
This is an interesting stage indeed, in my view it does and does not exist, I have heard of cases where people who can see auras saw Vampires with 'tendrils' though I believe this is a stage I believe it to be a rare one.
Eye Contact
This is the first stage to possibly require conscious thought, therefore Unintentional Vampires hardly ever reach this stage. This stage normally occurs a short while after a Vampire has been awakened, normally when they are starting to get a feel for Locale. Eye Contact can actually sometimes be easy than Locale, this is because energy can flow more easily through the eyes.
Far Locale
This is when a Vampire really gets a feel for their abilities, this can be anything from the house next door to a house in the next street.
Ranged
This is the really big one, some may say range is infinite some may say it's a load of rubbish, but I think long-ranged feeding is perfectly possible. It would most likely have to be accomplished via Astral Projection though, and the majority of Vampires won't go this far because there is no cause to.
Temporary Vampirism
Perfectly normal people can sometimes loose Psychic Energy, sometimes they lose enough to temporarily require to feed off others, this can be for various reasons including; Ill health, severe stress / trauma, being fed off by a Vampire and others, this is then known as Sympathic Vampirism.
Forms of Psychic Energy
Psychic Energy exists in three forms, Emotion, Life Force and Elemental, Life Force can come from any living thing, though it is normally taken from humans. Emotion comes directly from humans. Elemental Energy comes from the Elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water and possibly a fifth, Spirit). You could argue that Emotion and Life Force are part of the Fifth Element Spirit (which is a combination of the other four).
Emotion can be a potent energy source, it can also be very dangerous source. Bad Emotions (eg. Hate, anger and depression) can all make a Psychic Vampire feel ill (more so than if they hadn't fed for awhile). But not all Psychic Vampires feed on Emotion; other Vampires feed on Life Force.
Life Force is what a living creature's soul needs to survive, otherwise it moves on to another plane, and thus there exists the two deaths; the first the physical body dying, the second, the astral body (made of Life Force Psychic Energy) dying when the soul has consumed all of it. The soul then moves on.
Vampires do not take enough Life Force to actually kill the astral body though; they only take as much as is needed and any that is taken is quickly replaced (say in about twenty-four hours depending on the person the astral body will have returned to full strength). Life Force is also a potent energy source like Emotion, but it doesn't have a good or bad side, it just is Life Force.
Elemental Energy is all around us, but usually not in large amounts, but say that it rains, or the wind is blowing hard, then there is energy (water and air respectively). The difference with Elemental energy is the fact that it is not a combination of the four elements (if you agree with the statement about Emotion and Life Force being the Fifth Element Spirit). This could mean that Elemental Energy is less potent than the other two, though it would be hard to seriously come to a conclusion. Some Elemental Energy Vampires feed off specific elements whereas others feed off any and all.
Psychic Energy as Energy
How does Psychic Energy link in with other types of energy? Is it another kind of energy? Does that mean it can be converted into other types and vice versa? This is where no evidence exists, only theory but maybe that's all that will ever exist. Psychic Energy is a type of energy, therefore it should be able to be converted. For instance;
Let's say we have a Psychic Vampire on the telephone to another (non-Vampire) person, let's say that the Vampire wishes to feed from this person. Is it possible for that persons Life Force or Emotion to be converted into electrical energy, sent along a cable then turned back into psychic energy and be absorbed by the Psychic Vampire? Probably the best place is to start with what types of energy we know exist and can be converted between.
Kinetic (Motion)
Chemical
Thermal (Heat)
Electrical
Nuclear
Light
Elastic Potential (When you stretch something elastic)
Gravitational (Basically gravity)
Sound
Only a few of these energy types can not be converted to, eg. you cannot make electricity into nuclear energy. Though Psychic Energy could be one of those that cannot be converted into, thus stopping us from making the phone call aforementioned, or at least not being able to turn the energy back into Psychic Energy.
Another weakness with the example at least is the fact that draining Life Force like that would require the donor to actually consciously 'send' the energy. Emotion on the other hand would not require that (or a least not a deliberate sending) the donor would still be sending out the emotion but without the purpose of feeding the Vampire. For instance;
Say our donor has just had a fun day, the donor calls the Vampire (a friend) and tells the Vampire of this day, the donor is so happy her Emotions are just 'pouring out', and therefore the Vampire is fed.
The weakness now is Psychic energy being turned into Electricity and back, though there is a theory one could suggest here;
Say that Emotion is transferred in the voice (most people have different tones of voice for different moods) therefore when the sound is turned into electricity and back (which we know happens) the Emotion is still with it, and therefore our Vampire receives it. But when the voice is turned into electrical energy it is degraded, have you ever listened to music down a phone? It's not very good, therefore the emotion in a voice could be taken away... or maybe not?
Links to Sanguine Vampires
Sanguine Vampires are those who feed on blood, this is only ever taken from a willing donor and there are quite strict views (and justly so) on the good treatment of donors in the Vampire community. Sanguine Vampires may seem very different at first from Psychic Vampires; they have a highly active form of feeding, they feed off willing donors (who therefore know they are being fed off), and of course the fact they feed on a different thing, or are they?
Blood contains some Life Force, and this is why Sanguine Vampires feed on it, reasons why they feed on blood to obtain Life Force instead of using Psychic Vampirism methods are straight forward, they can't, this could be because they have very little power when it comes to such things, they can't concentrate well enough to achieve this or their body just prefers feeding on blood.
Their body preferring to feed on blood has nothing to do with a blood fetish, or anything of the sort, it could just be they way their body is adapted for receiving energy, in the food rather than directly to the astral body, which links in with them not being able to concentrate well enough to obtain Psychic Energy directly (though not in all cases).
Although some peoples bodies are adapted for both methods (hence the type of Vampire: Psychic with Sanguine tendencies, or Sanguine with Psychic tendencies) this does not apply to all Vampires.
Feeding
Feeding methods differ between Vampires, this can either be just because people are different or because of an early awakening (in which case subconscious feeding methods will not be highly developed, and therefore neither will the conscious feeding methods).
The majority of feeding techniques differ only in how the achieve the 'link' as it were, to their donor. The majority will generally all fit into the progression of Psychic Vampires (Under 'Why does Psychic Vampirism Exist?') Generally a Vampire awakened in the late teens will either be in the Locale, Tendrils or Eye Contact stage, (though in this case Eye Contact is more closely linked to Locale).
Basically all feeding methods fit into the stages, the only difference being in how the Vampire achieves the 'link' and how they draw the energy towards them. The act of achieving the link and drawing the energy towards themselves is mostly different for every Vampire.
Conclusion
Basic Principles

Methods of 'linking' with donor and drawing Psychic Energy are different though.
