Tom Jenkins is the Space Guard's newest cadet, on the ship "Daedalus", three weeks out of Brightholme. He has the entire resources of the Space Guard files to help him search for the secret of his origins, and now he is faced with the challenge of living up to the expectations of the Guard.

After an encounter with space pirates in which the pirates came out on bottom and himself on top, Tom Jenkins finds his dreams coming true aboard the Space Guard ship "Daedalus". He's gotten off the interstellar reformatory Brighthome. He's befriended his muse, Alex. And he's well on his way to finding out about a past of which he has no memory.
