I have heard and listened to the argument that cain who killed Abel children were the first vampires.
If this is so then Grendel who was a monster, one of a giant race which survived the great flood, slain by Beowulf. It is told that his origins stretch back to Cain, who killed Abel.

This would make Beowulf the first vampire slayer.

Grendal was an ogre, not a vampire...Beowulf's legend tells of an ogre hunting villageers of a small town, Beowulf hunted and killed this ogre with the help of the villagers. Beowulf was at least 1000 years after Cain's time, and was according to legend across the ocean on the shores of Scandanavia. Northman rules. Not christian, as these things were not thought of in the days of the Northmen.

The story of Beowulf has many different versions like every myth.

its hard to say, who was the first vampire slayer....

it could of been time before we had pen n paper to write on...or anything to record it with, so how would one know who did what?

its just most likely hear say mostly.....

but Beowulf could of been...maybe not, we are not to judge that ourselves, but we do have a choice to believe it or not.

the more information you have, the better chance of you choosing to believe what you think the truth is..and not what everyone says it is

its all about personal choice really....you choice to believe or not..but the more you know the better its always is.well...in some cases anyways...

As someone has said...different variations...I prefer to see him as an ogre.

Beowulf, like all stories, is just a magnificent tale that, through the years, has been modified and twisted too many times to make it more and more exciting.

The problem here is that the tale of Beowulf has its origins as a oral narrative. It was passed down verbally for many years before it was written down. Not only that, but the person to finaly record the tale down with pen and paper was a monk, who then put his own perspective on the tale. It is not trulley known whether even Grendal or Beowulf even existed. Or what Grendal even was. The poetic discription of the so called Grendal leaves one to believe that he was more beast like than Vampire. But Like I said. It was an oral tradition.

Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, battles three antagonists: Grendel, who is destroying Heorot and its inhabitants in Denmark, Grendel's mother, and later in life (after he is King) a dragon. He is mortally wounded in the final battle, and after his death is buried in a barrow by his retainers.

it´s interesting how all of you can give different views ....
i understand that it´s a tale, but maybe and just maybe in the past it was something that happened ... or course a historical event that from time to time became a myth...

I have never read the story but have seen movie versions, and what I remember of it, I had the idea in my head it was parasitic therefore, can be classed as a vampiric creature.
But then again, I am told I find vampires everywhere.
Let's not forget that in the past creatures were interchangeable one word was used often to cover ghouls/demons/angels/vampires/witches/wers etc.

I think mister Beowulf was a vampslayer(according to all the storys), and with that he can rott.

Beowulf is a comparatively recent tale in human terms - we have lost much of the previous literature because it was part of an oral tradition, or any written evidence has been lost.
You cannot prove that Beowulf WAS the first recorded slayer, only that he wasn't - by reference to a known earlier work

Grendel could have been any number of "monsters".

how would that have any bering on the matter?

But that is the point here. Any of the original recorded text of the story of Beowulf is going to be propaganda because of the people who were writing it. Asking if Grendel was a Vampire, is like asking if any ancient monster is a Vampire. No written record is devoid of the propaganda of the culture that is writing it. And the origin of all are open to interpitation by the cultre reading it.

when I read Beowolf I never got any indication that Grendal was from Cain and Ables time..... the thing is Beowolf is from before their time.... it is a story that was past by word of mouth in the Anglo-saxon time frame.... which was before the garden of eden....

I don't think that Grendel was a vampire. Grendel's mother was supposedly a dragon. Maybe Beowulf was a monster slayer, but not a vampire slayer.

I always thought that vampire slayers slaid only vampires, and im pretty sure grendle was an ogre not a vampire, so he would be an ogre slayer not a vampire slayer, thats just my opinion...

every myth is changed every time it is told....so who knows what they were....

However, there were stories of the dead in the mounds (howes?) getting up and walking and wreaking havoc during the night. Ancient Scandinavians certainly had vampires.

i was just following the fact he is a child of cain and that is belived to be vampire

adam and eve are relatively modern myths anyway. the bible states that god created them about 7,000 years ago, but many human myths and legends go back 10,000 years or more, so Cain was hardly likely to have been the first vampire - he's still the new kid on the block. i bet the oldest vampire slayer was probably Chinese. they were the first with almost everything. they had writing as far back as 4500 BC

Ancient Norse would have had no idea who Cain even was. The relation between Grendel and Cain would have been a purly Christianized idea.

The only connection i can think of with Beowulf is the Blood Eagle for some reason. Must but some docu show i saw, Sorry if this is totally of the wrong track, i'm not very up on Norse mythology....I'm fine with being told i'm wrong as long as no one suggests 'it's a girl chosen to slay the vampires....'

but beowulf was written by christian monk, and was written through his vision, so it is likely that greandle was not of cain children, but who is to know

he is a dinosaur slayer.gendrel has a big stomach.big hind legs,very small arms and a large mouth with lots of teeth.add a tail and bingo!a small carnosaour.the last dragon was killed in england in the 14th centuary ad.

im always inclined to beleive ancient legends.modern people where not there and see things according to such a different worldview and values.which i feel very sceptical about.

there is something else though, the great giants were the children of angles , not cain, the vampire children who were vampires were said to come from lilitha , not cain

Thats the Point. It was "Written" during the Christian Advancment, but the oral tradition went further back. Back before the idea of Christianity had even touched the Norse.
