Through the years it has become a tradition to bless children and new born babies in churches, But what about Pagan blessings or Wiccan blessings for newborns and children? Do any of you know of a Pagan or Wiccan blessings for newborns and children? or even some other blessing in a different religion that perhaps I have not mentioned? I would love to hear from any of you who know about them or have been witness as a blessing was been carried out.
I guess my question is thus:
1.what was it like?
2. would you recommend it or have them same blessing done on your children?
Thank you AngelsMort.
I know about when Mufasa held Simba up on the high rock and the soundtrack played 'The Circle of Life' on The Lion King :P That seemed pretty Pagan and naturistic to me ;)
Okay, I realize that was goofy... but I did find this:

I have read of Wiccan blessing services for a baby often called Wiccanings but for the most part they leave the design of the ritual up to the practicioner.
Since a lot of Wiccans believe even the child should have a say in the matter of their belief the ceremony is often simply a protective and celebratory rite, a sort of introduction to the Goddess and God of the child and a giving of thanks to them, for the infant.
All faiths deserve such a welcome and ritual of new life :) So it's not surprise you can find them in religions outside the mainstream.
well i know we do not perform any on the children in our family well unless someone marries into the catholic religion, myself I do not see why they do it, because children or born pure and do not need to be blessed they being born is a blessing in itself. just how I look at it, they are not old enough to choose the religion they want till they are older. just me I guess, yet I do know we perform protection rituals on them.
A blessing is a protection for a child. Call it a spell or a prayer who cares. It is done to keep the little one from harm. I say have it done according to your beliefs.
I thought she meant a Blessing like when they baptise the Baby, as in the catholic religion I am sorry if I
misunderstood .
Anyway yes we do protection (bless) them if that is what your asking.. I am confused now LOL
actually in a way a catholic baptism could in some aspect be considered a protection blessing, when you baptise a child you are annoucing to the entire church community that a new person has entered the faith, you are also asking that each member of the church remember them in their prayers and you are asking for gods forgiveness of original sin for the child and asking that god take them in hand and protect them and cherish them as a member of his flock. so in some ways it can be considered a "rite of protection" since your asking that spirits, people and such look out for and protect the child in prayer.
The Alchemie Shoppe does blessing and consecration ceremonies for any and everything.
www.alchemieshoppe.com :D go check it out, they have alot of of interesting stuff. It all comes down to what sort of thing you want.
Re: Catholic baptism ...
I'm no expert and I'm not sure about this guys but I am Catholic and when I was 2 months old in 1980 I had meningitis. I hadn't been baptised and apparently when I was on my death bed I was baptised and my parents said basically days after that I turned around 360 and recovered ...
I do believe it to be spiritual and stuff and now I am a godmother to one of my angelic nephews I have a moral and religious responsibility to help him out with religious stuff when he's older.
blessing a child is just that you bless a child ,I have not been to a blessing but know of people who have done them it is suppose to be fun and meaningful all at once the child receives gifts and blessings for health , welfare and safety , and to be welcomed by the God and Goddess.
Me my self have not seen any but my uncle is a pastor and he blessed my children it is up to then to pick any thing else they want in there life and they all have been blessed with great lifes
whoever said it was to keep the little child safe is right from what i hear..
When a friend of mine's grandchild turned 5. She is a High Priestess. Close friends were invited. Each of us brought food, as apples etc, and pop and water instead of wine. The circle was cast. She spoke words and I do remember that she stated he is a child of the God and Goddess until he decides when he is older this is not the path for him he wishes to persue. He was given a pentagram on a necklace she put on him. The circle then was closed.
I have not heard of pagan blessings, but I am sure they exist. I have not read all the replies in this thread.
I believe that it would be a nice thing to do to bless the child but really, not necessary. I mean, what's going to happen, is going to happen, as it's meant to be. You can put a horse shoe around it's neck, tie rabbit's feet on it, keep it away from the number 13 and put 4 leaf clovers in it's diaper all day long, but what's to be, is to be. ;)
Jamie that is very true but,
I always thought blessing a child was a sort ritualistic way of saying how much you want the best for them with all your heart. That is why I wanted to know and was so interested in finding any of the other ways of blessing babies and children.
but that might just be my view on it,lol. =)
When my oldest was younger he was giving a blessing at the church i use to attend. It was pretty much just to show how happy that we were that he was in our lives and to protect him in a way. I have was wiccan before that and my husband was not...So that is why he was blessed in a church. I have since had him and his little brother blessed. The way that it was performed was pretty much how ever i wanted it. We did prayer bundles and everyone gave a prayer for each of the boys as to what will happen in there life and they were burnt. They each have a bundle that was made for them to protected them as they go in life. My Exhusband wanted them baptized but i wouldn't allow it nor would the preacher at the church that we attended. He as i belive that the children should be baptized when they can decide what religion they want.
Yea, I will go with the wanting the baby to be happy and have a good life. But I think the religious people that do it are doing it to give the baby a one way pass to Heaven. hahaha.....
I remember in Sex and the City when Miranda and Steve were talking about whether or not to babtize Brady. Well Steve said he wanted to because he didn't want little Brady to die and end up in purgatory, floating around. HA.......*sigh* Miranda of course, thought that was stupid. She didn't believe in all that stuff.
I don't know of any personally but it seems to my like very religion and culture has their own way of blessing there children.
I never had or heard of anyone having a Wiccan or pagan blessing. I had my two eldest kids bless by the church and once they grew up they went to another church and got it done again so they can belong to that church. My youngest son I havent even bothered will let him do it when he is good and ready.
Once it was a important thing to have your children blessed. Now it isnt so much. The old ways are slowly dying out.
I have as an active pagan farther had my children blessed.
It can be linked with a naming ritual as well.
We went to a sacred place for my family tradition, you could do this at home or a nice land site.
Hold hand in a circle and say “Gods of our home, gods of our hearth,
today we present you with someone new.
She is a member of our family,
and this is her new home.
We ask you to welcome her,
we ask you to love her,
we ask you to protect her,
we ask you to bless her.” Or him depending on what you had lol
With a cup of water, wine, mead or milk and pass around as all who drink then say” welcome baby to our hearts”
Personally I placed a drop on babies lips before it was passed around “germs”
Then we all said
“She is a member of our family,
and this is her new home.
Watch over her as she grows.
Watch over her as she lives.
Watch over her with love.”
I have a picture in my portfolio holding Bridget (named after the goddess) in the pagan sacred place.
PS if you haven’t rated me it would be nice if you did when there ;-)
I rate all back just as nicely
oh wow thanks Lavisbre!
that sounds beautiful the way you wrote it. =)
*ps I will check out you pro now, lol. *
i think you would find a wiccan or pagan ceramonie to be like a protection cerimonie on the child. but it would very from coven to coven
I dont see the point in it anymore. Let them grow up and once they are old enough to make a decission let them choose.
Whats the point the kids will grow up and want to belong somewhere else and go through the whole thing again. Dont bother let them make their own chose when they are old enough.
