What changed your mind about the occult, or metaphysical beliefs you once had?
Well, some things are or can sound very very unlikely in the cognitive and rationality process of something supernatural/occult/paranormal, but I always tend to keep an open door and mind for this things just for the fact that Im still looking around and studying behaviors from ancient times until present days of the behavior behind all this. I don't like to discard everything by just thinking someone or everyone is delusional; simply because to say that, is to say we all are delusional right now, societies and the world is/are currently prompt by religions, ideals and uncertain theories about gods and 'big bangs' so is rather unwise and unjust to discard other possibilities as well. I don't judge in base of looks or sound of anything also; for me at least is still in the pre-judgemental phase so I tend to keep quiet on the claim or topics and observe as much as I can, until i have further knowledge/evidence to say/discard any of the claims. Now you might say: "wait, isn't this guy bashing all the "vampires" in other threads" well i haven't said i don't believe anyone have the certain need or trait or whatever they claim to have, I'm not in their bodies or possibly know can now or am the same, but i might hold my theories and point to their claims, yet i wont accept something that they think they are with a few given characteristic that don't fit with the term used by the description/image and analysis of what is scholarly/mythologically designated for.
Society seems to change their minds according to the lives around them, and the influence of others closest to them. The would be practitioners seem to borderline the edge of reason between both worlds for some strange reason. More then likely out of fear, or resentment from their peers.
I see it always, the individual that shouts..."You must repent", to the practitioner that wears a pentacle around their neck. Then the practitioner states that they are Pagan to justify their belief system, instead of saying that which is actually within their heart. Again, more then likely out of fear, or resentment from their peers.
I'm not sure my mind has ever really changed, to be honest.
When I was a child I would pretend I was a unicorn (not riding a unicorn, but the actual animal itself), as a tween I used to dream of being a witch and flying around the cities. As a teenage I was obsessed with vampires and threw myself pretty heavily in the gothic culture.
And here I am, at 28, still admiring the Vampiric cultures and mythos. So I guess it's always been there for me.
My mind has not changed on any form of the occult, or faith or society just a broader understanding of it. call it what you wish, we all search in our lifes for the truth, whether we find it or not, we have actually searched for our own being and to understand our place.
Society is changing we see that and with it may come more basic laws on the occult or faith, yet it is left to those who question or believe in it to come to turns with their own innerself.
What really changed my beliefs about the occult were two main things
1. When i saw a ghost, a couple times. it proved to me that these things are out there
2. Watching the magic and things that go on through my friend stephanie.
After extensive research, I finally found where all of my beliefs stemmed from...and I must say, that while a great number of them are from one source, a few of them are from random different beliefs. Satanism, Wicca, Gnosis, Christianity..my beliefs come from each of those things and form my view on the world as a whole.
I guess you can say that I have always been interested in theology as a whole, and do whatever I can to study it as much as I can, be it by the people around me, or the interwebz, or even books. In the end, it was my heart that decided it for me. I was more comfortable walking into a store full of books on the "Occult Religions:" Wicca, Gnosis, Taoism, and the like than I was walking into a Christian book store. Pentagrams, Fairies, and Crescent moons caught my eye far more than crosses and crucifixes. I guess you can say it was the spark of interest that changed my mind. Because if I didn't feel at peace practicing one belief, if I didn't feel confident, and comfortable, then what was I doing? If I didn't feel that it was the correct way for me to live, why was I living such a life?
My opinion is, there is no line between the occult and the real, is up to the individual to believe that everything is possible in our universe. The mentality of the unknown is different between the East and the West, But, still the same planet. Just because you don't believe, or never have the opportunity to see or feel the unknown, dd not mean, doesn't exist.
Those who have grown up and matured will be enlightened to their own perceptions. They will form their own ideas and thus some will breakaway from the occult and its beliefs, if they were beliefers, others will be drawn even more deeper in to it. It depends on the person, their background, their roots and their spirituality as to how they evolve in their past and futur revelations.
So far, I like deathnitegrl's response.
Our life experiences do indeed change and morph the way that we feel about things and in turn, they change the credibility we give to things like the occult.
My personal experience has strengthened my belief in the occult on more than one occasion and on more than one topic. Experiences belong to the individual, and it's true that no one can confirm or deny what an individual believes to be true or what that person has experienced for themselves.
I think it's interesting as one grows older and more mature, one stops seeking validation for what they believe or what they have experienced and instead continues the hunt for truth alone.
My mind has not changed of the believer or seeker part
I am still what I am a witch and learning to be a wizard
also once your a seeker u dontgo back or a believer you stay what u are
My belief's have only grown stronger. Yet, the non-believers will stop at nothing to disparage those belief's because they live their life being cynical about eveything.
Reasonable people can place their beliefs in context. I feel the line is crossed when irrational claims of experience are expected to be received without inquiry. Even as a believer I felt that simple questions went unanswered, or vaguely dismissed.
I see so many become Jaded, or lose themselves in pursuit of noteriety.
The whole underlying feud over "Rights of Gift", or " Dicsipleships"
The assumption that everybody who shares your belief, will except without doubt any experience interpreted as mystical, or convincing..
I think Upir said it quite right,
Yet in some cases faith or religion or just simple structure of life is hard to show proof for. Yet can be displayed or sites given on why we do what we feel is right with our lives. XSo is it belief or proof in what should be sited. Just and paths we feel is true to our own structure. a question I ponder myself on some of my collegues remarks.
But expression is ours to make , yet is more likely to be understood if there lies proof behind the remarks.
I know Dabbler
But like all here we come to see or learn and with proof it is better understood on the logical side.
We all have a path and yet some things are ever changing and with boundries on playing field there is some things no matter the insight others will protest against it or hamper it.
I agree, i would like to see sites on the psot to back things up, yet I know that certain identies can not show background. and I accept the information, yet if I decided to use it or not is left to me to choose.
To imply that logic, or reasoning has anything to do with faith is ludicris, is it not confidence that is made by "demonstrations" and "experiences"? It is flawed for anyone claiming faith in something to insist others belief what appeared to them to concrete their I one time belief, into a conviction.
What ended my one time belief? The placing of individual claims of experience over belief.
How guilible are those who place everything on the potentially fabricated claims of others? Very? I have seen the buckets overflow, leaving the devotees wanting.
Once what appeared to be a paranormal experience, was explained as something rather common.
As far as "abilities" I observed regularly the predominatly suspect practice of rotating "spiritualist", and " mediums", drawing an obvious conclusion that
It all shares with Mentalist, and Fakirs Slight of Thought. Anyone can see the disclaimer " Entertainment purposes only" yet they will still invest their emotional well being in the persons hands, after being company to card readers that denounce all the " super natural " mumbo jumbo, I accepted that a lesser then sensational knack exist.
well i say that to stop seeking is like you will never find a thing if you do so that makes you dead. And i think same goes for to stop believeing in something just because someone or somethings in your live points to other things .
Times are hard and to say i just believe in someone is just not who i am i do more then believe i live it and do it i dont try and just believe it.
So i say to thos that just stop dont you die .
Then again some times is good to die to self thinking and doing things for your self some times we all could use a litte help.
Way back in time. The place where I was born, there is no line between what is real and what is not real. You must be in those places to feel the sensation of the unknown. Yes, You can feel the unknown in big cities, but, is not the same as being in a place that still have their own legend and curses. That is the reason why I am so into the unknown, because I face the unknown everyday. For the normal person, when you talk to them about it, their mouth open and they say: "get out of here, that can not happen" my reply is always...just because you don't believe, doesn't mean do not exist or happen. I did an experiment with a female friend, I told her that I can make her have the worse nightmare of her time, She agree and I just make some drawing in a piece of Paper, told her to put it under the pillow, and to do not look into it, until the next morning. The next day, I called her, And She almost killed me over the phone. She said She went to Hell and Back. Never under estimate the power around us.
