Are any members here familiar with the legend of Church in the Wood in Hollington (part of Hastings) which has had to be reconsecrated several times after Dark rituals performed there and was, according to the legend, built by Old Nick himself?

I would be grateful for any info on this topic.

Is that in Massachusetts?

There are many conflicting legends locally about that church. I remember visiting it when I was about 10 with a group of other kids on bikes around twilight and it was pretty scary at the time!

Now, there isn't much wood around the church as the area has been built up with housing to meet the expansion needs of Hastings.

Mind you, this area has always had it's share of mysticism and legends.

That link was a really interesting website. I remember from my youth stories in the local newspaper of the church having to be reconsecrated several times after Dark rituals were carried out there but the full archive hasn't yet been put online, although when I worked for the local paper a few years back it was always a good skive to go down to the archives.

I guess, like all myths and legends the story changes over the years.

Thanks shedevil. The new post still lives and thanks for clarifying were, We have both town in the US in Massachusetts That have occult histories as well.

According to the research I found the Devil didn't build it. However he did get the location moved according to legend. It goes that he tried to stop the building of the church. So the church sent to Priest to meet with him. He said he would stop as long as he pick the location of the church, they agreed. So he pick a spot and as soon as the church was built a thick grove of woods sprang up around it.

I wasn't able to find anything about Dark Rituals being preformed there as of yet. If I do I'll post it for. I'm still researching the subject to become better informed.

It was in the Hastings Observer in the 70s and 80s about the rituals being performed there. Unfortunately they haven't put that part of the archive online yet.

And of course much of the records of the 70s and 80s have been lost in the digital age.

However, things like that stick in the memory!

However, I will take some photos of the church over the weekend and post them on this site.

I'm afraid it doesn't have the same haunting qualities now that it did when I first visit it as it is now on the edge of an industrial estate.

However, I will post some photos this weekend. I wonder how much of the woodland is left since the last time I was there a couple of years ago as there has been a lot of building of houses in the area since then.

I can't remember the dates but it was in the Hastings Observer in the 1980s some time.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the wood to the South and West of the church was still intact. Indeed it is now a nature reserve. I had a beautiful walk through the wood for half hour or so before moving on to Mr Crowley's house on the Ridge which is about 15 mins by car or taxi from the church.

It seemed that there was some happy clappy Christian thing on there so I didn't get a chance to explore the church properly, let alone hold any ritual there.

Thank you for the year so I can research it some more. The pics are nice. It looks like a nice setting for a horror movie

DarkAngel - there are some lovely places to visit in this area and it is full of history.

It is a beautiful setting on the edge of a large town.

Tomorrow I'm planning on having a walk over the hills on the other side of Hastings, which is a country park. (If you use google you'll find some pictures of Hastings Country Park).

There is also a rich pagan tradition in this area.

Hardbiter - it would make an excellent setting for a horror movie.

One of the other legends is that a priest tried to build the church elsewhere and it was constantly knocked down so Old Nick told him where he would allow it to be built - then once it was built Old Nick surrounded it with woodland.

It must be an interesting place to be at twilight!

oh wow i have never heard of this i am going to have ot read on it,i have heard of a place called heaven and hell before where the top part was for holy religious acts and the bottom part was for magick sorcery that would happen at night by the same who did the holy acts on the upper level of a monestary.
