i got a call from my mother tonight telling me my grandmother had a stroke and was in the hospital - yet again. she was confused: she thought her daughters were still in school, and that i was as well. also she thought my grandfather was still alive. she had a small stroke - maybe more than one over the years.
she won't be alive much longer - which has me thinking: her generation, often called the "greatest generation", with good reason are quickly passing into the summerland. as they do, their memories of the what the world used to be pass into lore. the stories we've heard from them fading into the twilight of our memorials. i fear that in this ceaseless war with time, the precepts of ethics, the real meaning of "family values", charity, and honesty will recede in the outer darkness with them. then we will be left with tales and legends of titans laced in armor and infallibility instead of stories about real people - who had dreams, hopes, prayers, and yes...fears as well.
we don't need superheroes. real ones will do just fine.
My condolences, but this is better suited as a journal entry.
