There is a specific song that has been bothering me with it's meaning for quite some time now. It is "Wings of a Butterfly" by H.I.M (His Infernal Majesty).

Heaven ablaze in our eyes
We're standing still in time
The blood on our hands is the wine
We offer as sacrifice

Come on, and show them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul

This endless mercy mile
We're crawling side by side
With hell freezing over in our eyes
Gods kneel before our crime

Come on lets show, them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
Don't let go
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
For your soul

Come on, and show them your love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul, my love
Rip out the wings of a butterfly
For your soul
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly)
Don't let go
(Rip out the wings of a butterfly) [x2]

For your soul

I'm not so sure what I think it is about. Is anyone out there observant enough to be able to put their two cents in? What do you think the song lyrics are talking about?

I've been there plenty of times to check out other songs in which the lyrics didn't quite reach to me...this one, however, seems different somehow...

Second by: Katatonia (RIP victims of Manchester, England attack)

I believe this song Second by Katatonia (one of my favorites of all time by the band) is about the devastation that follows a terrorist attack (Sun has lost, Mountains fell, What took away our anchor, Escape is a long dead end). It deals with the aftermath, the suffering & guilt that burdens the survivors (their is always survivors guilt), also estranged friendships (Will you find me where I am now) and those who lose their friends completely in the attack. It addresses that we need to come together as a whole when acts of violence like this happen, we're much stronger together then divided (We need to rise higher) while also addressing the anger the victims families, friends and the world in general feels (What controls our anger) towards the terrorists. With so many terrorist attacks lately, its so sad but 911 of course is the first one I think of. Lastly, it recommends we cherish every second we're alive cause you never know when we could lose our own life or someone close to us, perhaps a family member, or a friendship we neglected to cultivate properly (Letting one second go on, To go over a lifetime) that's a warning to heed that we could regret that mistake for a lifetime so remember to value those who we hold nearest and dearest, don't take it for granted, cause you never know when your time with them could be up. (Second by Katatonia)

forgot to post the actual lyrics, here they are

Second by Katatonia
--------------------------------
Sun has lost
Mountains fell
What took away our anchor
Snow in the old sky
Escape is a long dead end

We need to rise higher

Temples burn
Fires underneath
What controls our anger
Moon coming in
Sun has lost
Did you know
Mountains fell

Letting one second go on
To go over a lifetime
We were such good friends
Will you find me where I am now

Black At The Center by: Blaqk Audio

"Black At The Center" by: Blaqk Audio (Davey Havok of AFI & Dreamcar is the lead singer)
-----------------------------------------------

What was the question? I’ve been lost in flames too long.
“Would I still love you even if the fire were gone?”
Repeat the question, as I crawl into the sun.
I know I love you. It’s the worst thing I have done well.

I’ve been chasing flames that repeat my name.
Though I’m bowed by pain I can’t deny it.

If you want the truth, yes, I still love you.
it’s the worst thing I could ever do
but I’m helpless and I’m freezing and you’re teasing me by tearing down the sun over and over.

Oh this feeling will remain, you’ll be forever – only if we part can you keep my heart.
For this feeling to remain just tell me, “Never.” And the saddest part
is that you’ll keep my heart from me.
[x2]

Will you hold my heart for me?

------------------------------------------
To me these lyrics are the definition of the sort of love that's as painful as it is all encompassing. It's the love that burns you through but you can't help but helplessly want it and need it, even if it may indeed be the worst thing for you in the end.

Punchline by: Chevelle

Punchline by: Chevelle
---------------------------
All I mentioned is coming
A new dimension of earth has begun
See the ends of earth there crumbling
All the work we've done here has been lost

But I don't hang on to much
And I feel this joke has gone long enough
We doubt you feel the same
But I'm not your punchline paid to stay

All the others
They've gone...

Who are
Who are you
[x4]

Claws tighten down against
Ease into passionate suspense
For a second not a single
Moment of my past belonged

But I don't hang on to much
And I feel this joke has gone long enough
We doubt you feel the same
But I'm not your punchline paid to stay

I don't hang on to much
And I feel this joke has gone long enough
We doubt you feel the same
But I'm not your punchline paid to stay
-------------------------------------------------------

This is my favorite song off of Chevelle's latest album: The North Corridor, it seems to be about the destruction of the planet and how humans are mindlessly doing so. You have companies using hazardous chemicals, dumping hazardous waste, emissions from cars, fracking and such..the list goes on. Not to mention the impact of climate change, as well as the mixing of environmental concerns with cultural concerns such as with the Dakota Access Pipeline for example. All of this to me is summed up well in the first verse

"All I mentioned is coming
A new dimension of earth has begun
See the ends of earth there crumbling
All the work we've done here has been lost"

he's warning of what's to come if we continue our ways and don't heed the warning signs

"But I don't hang on to much
And I feel this joke has gone long enough
We doubt you feel the same
But I'm not your punchline paid to stay"

he's saying he doesn't hold on to much hope that there will be ever be conserted effort (with all the political unrest, disregard for saving the environment & such) put in place to make any waves towards a solution, it's a joke really and he feels the jokes gone on too far and he's sick of it and he's sick of listening to the lies that efforts are being made that aren't (while oil dumping and hazardous waste and emissions continue to be an issue).
"All the others
They've gone...

Who are
Who are you
[x4]"
This speaks of the pioneers of the environmentalist movement in the past who would no doubt be a shamed of the mockery thats happened of the movement now and he's saying who are you, those of you who claim to care, as you are frauds

"Claws tighten down against
Ease into passionate suspense
For a second not a single
Moment of my past belonged"

here he speaks of as I mentioned above cultural unrest like Standing Rock/the pipeline in example and how we do what we want often for our own selfish agendas and not caring about culture, environment, political unrest, terrorism or who becomes victims in the end, he's saying he doesn't even wanna be associated with this crap anymore, he wants to forget the past and is feeling tense about the dark looming future

Song of the Dispossessed by: Dead Can Dance

Lyrics: The river is deep and the road is long, daylight comes and I want to go home. Awoke this morning to find my people's tongues were tied and in my dreams they were given books to poison their minds. The river is deep and the mountain high, how long before the other side. We are their mortar, their building bricks and their clay. Their gold teeth mirror both our joys and our pain. The river is deep and the ocean wide, who will show us how to read the signs. The earth is our mother she taught us to embrace the light, now the lord is master she suffers an eternal night. You blocked up my ears, you plucked out my eyes, you cut out my tongue, you fed me with lies, oh lord.

Song of the Dispossessed by: Dead Can Dance

One of my favorites by Dead Can Dance this song is about how we seem to neglect the culture of others we are ignorant to their way of life and their traditions and their history. Instead we we believe our way and our traditions are all that matters as we ignore them and also at times even subjugate their rights (case in point: Standing Rock). This quote by Will Rogers speaks of this "We will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others. " We must embrace, honor and respect the traditions, beliefs and spirit of others or else this world will continue to tear itself a part and remain divided and never united. War, terrorism and dead will continuously remain on the rise. Never will there be peace on earth unless we can come together, instead of coming apart as we seem to be doing now and have done in the past.

I'll Be Gone by: Linkin Park

Like shining oil, this night is dripping down
Stars are slipping down, glistening
And I'm trying not to think what I'm leaving now
No deceiving now, it's time you let me know
Let me know

[Chorus:]
When the lights go out and we open our eyes
Out there in the silence, I'll be gone, I'll be gone
Let the sun fade out and another one rise
Climbing through tomorrow, I'll be gone, I'll be gone

This air between us is getting thinner now
Into winter now. Bitter sweet
And 'cross that horizon this sun is setting down
You're forgetting now, it's time you let me go, let me go

[Chorus:]
When the lights go out and we open our eyes
Out there in the silence, I'll be gone, I'll be gone
Let the sun fade out and another one rise
Climbing through tomorrow, I'll be gone, I'll be gone

[Bridge:]
And tell them I couldn't help myself
And tell them I was alone
Oh, tell me I am the only one
And there's nothing that can stop me

[Chorus:]
When the lights go out and we open our eyes
Out there in the silence, I'll be gone, I'll be gone
Let the sun fade out and another one rise
Climbing through tomorrow, I'll be gone, I'll be gone, I'll be gone

Following the very said suicide of Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington (RIP) at age 41 yesterday, hanging himself on Chris Cornell's birthday (a close friend of Chris's). I felt it fitting to post what I believe to be the meaning behind one of my Linkin Park song favorites "I'll Be Gone". Chester leaves behind aside from legions of fans, a beautiful wife and 6 children.

I have always believed this song to be about suicide, about not being able to cope with whatever is depressing
you in your life. A dark horizon that has come onto you that you can't get out from under. I, as have many
have known someone personally who's chosen to end their own life and no one can judge or know what that is about
until we're in that persons shoes. Sometimes to the person they can find no other way to find peace but that.
This song speaks in it's lyrics to the very core of this deep and very personal struggle. The tug-of-war
that unfolds inside each person who thinks of suicide. *Like shining oil, this night is dripping down
Stars are slipping down, glistening
And I'm trying not to think what I'm leaving now
No deceiving now, it's time you let me know
Let me know* That very first verse almost says it all really, it speaks of a person who feels their time on the
earth has runs its course and they need to leave but they know they're leaving much behind in their wake
but they feel it's what they must do. The rest of the lyrics speak of being alone and feeling they can't take it anyone
they must end the pain and to do so is to end their life. *And tell them I couldn't help myself
And tell them I was alone
Oh, tell me I am the only one
And there's nothing that can stop me*

Sanction by: Katatonia

Lyrics: I swallow light! And what if I move, lapsing into failure. In the lowering night, in the lowering night. I had waited for you, though I was certain you wouldn't come back, no. Into the after hours! Smudged my heart for all to see. But it's so quiet now, makes it harder to shine. Had a dream about tomorrow! But with nothing more to think about, I fade out. Bring on sedation! I have waited a long time and dragged myself a long way. There's a flight to Medellín, twelve hours of drinking gin. Awakened by summer! Sever the ties that were once unyielding. Packed my money under night's neon curtain. Smudged my heart for all to see. But it's so quiet now, makes it harder to shine. Had a dream about tomorrow! But with nothing more to think about, I fade out.

This song, titled "Sanction" is one of my favorites off of Katatonia's latest album: The Fall Of Hearts. To me this song is clearly about love and loss (the fall of hearts). He had put his all into this relationship only to have it crumble at his feet (smudged my heart for all to see). He put himself out there and put his heart on the line and all for not. He now no longer has the one he wanted, she left and now he can't shine anymore for he is so depressed he is fading out. He's so lost and seeking salvation or an escape (Medellín - the capital of Colombia’s mountainous Antioquia province). Twelve hours drinking gin (looking for answers at the bottom of a bottle/ drinking away his pain). Trying to bring on sedation or find peace in any way he can, even if it's harmful to himself. Sever the ties That were once unyielding Packed my money Under night's neon curtain This last section of lyrics is him finally giving up, severing the ties from this person he so deeply loved, though the ties once were beyond binding and unyielding he must free himself fully (symbolically/ in essence - Packed my money Under night's neon curtain).

Feathers (live lyric video) by: A Perfect Circle

To me this song is in general about an a lot of things having to do with war, political unrest and oppression & seems to be very timely with how our nation is a bit of a mess at this time and if we learned to communicate better (as the chorus urges 'by the telling'), we an turn the scorned, angry & violent parties into peace (represented by feathers).

This song is from an upcoming album that will be titled "The Doomed" supposedly coming out before the end of the year.

Everyone's Safe in the Tree House by: I See Stars

Lyrics: I'm just a man with a vision Who's growing more blind everyday Eyes of a child now in ruins Scared of everything he became My voice wasn't loud enough for you to listen Your words weren't strong enough for me to stay here 'Cause I feel your love has always been empty Just a way to sink your teeth into me But the truth is we built our house in a tree We built the roads we walk upon I feel you have the worst intentions Controlling everyone but me My voice wasn't loud enough Your words weren't strong enough 'Cause I feel your love has always been empty Just a way to sink your teeth into me But the truth is we built our house in a tree We built the roads we walk upon Are you alive or are you just living? Are you alive or are you just living? You don't get it! You'll never get it! Do you have a life or are you just living? You don't get it! You'll never get it! Do you have a life or are you just living? I feel your love has always been empty Just a way to sink your teeth into me...'Cause I feel your love has always been empty (Been empty) Just a way to sink your teeth into me But the truth is we built our house in a tree We built the roads we walk upon

This song could be interpreted a myriad of ways. Without taking it apart stanza for stanza, I really think at it's core this song is about self apathy & self destructiveness. When someone lives in a way that they can no longer respect themselves, it's destructive (for example an addict). They often are so self loathing & detached from reality they either think no one could love them (cause they can't love themselves) or they've become so disillusioned & out of touch they don't trust anyone really does love them. It's a viscous cycle so they hide themselves away in some cases or build a barrier between themselves and the real world instead of facing their demons, at times this can even lead to suicide or some form of self harm.

Russia by: Tori Amos

Lyrics: For those on the Right You need to build a bridge For those on the Left You must build a bridge For those in Washington There is only one question Is Stalin on your shoulder Stalin on your shoulder As he was with his composers Time to wake Activate our Native Invader Warriors of the Earth It's getting late now Time to face Those who take More and more From our Great Mother The Mother we call home Is Stalin on your shoulder

To me this song speaks to the political discord and disharmony currently present in today's national landscape. The old adage keep your friends close and your enemies closer could apply here in spirit. However the song is sending out a warning in regards to that adage (is Stalin on your shoulder), don't have your enemies so close that your blinded by their presence so much so you're no longer aware of their true evil intentions. So besides being a beautiful song, I think it's also an important one.

Ravens by: Bush

Lyrics: All engines must fail sometimes People must fail sometimes Machines will break on some days Everyone breaks on somedays We disappear like ravens Wish that I could save us The dark ones into the darkest night Ravens The dark ones know how to love you right Ravens Lions get scared sometimes We all get scared sometimes I don't understand you right now I don't even know you right now We disappear like ravens Free of mind and dangerous The dark ones into the darkest night Ravens The dark ones know how to love you right Ravens Kisses will end one day It's a sad day When the kisses end We disappear like ravens Wish that I could save us The dark ones into the darkest night Ravens The dark ones know how to love you right Ravens

I think this song's about how we all can get lost in this world, feel hopeless & how it can seem there's no light in the dark. We're not really free but we wish we could all be free as birds, free like Ravens but how that could cause its own chaos too (be careful what you wish for). Also how dangerous the world is now with all the terrorism and how each & every one of us has a breaking point when it comes to both life and love.
